Who: Matt Murdock, NPC Foggy Nelson, Open to YOU!
What: Grand Opening of the Nelson & Murdock Legal Aid Clinic
Where: Gotham City, NJ
When: Monday, March 28th [forward dated]
Rating: PG-13 at most
It wasn't that Matt felt his duty in Hell's Kitchen was done; not by a long shot, but the neighborhood had been steadily improving while reports about Gotham City kept coming in with desperate regularity. Crime, corruption-- it was getting better; and they had their own brand of nightlife there to help, but that didn't account for all the smaller crimes, the little people who were being squashed by the system. Men and women who had made mistakes trying to survive, and were honestly looking to turn their lives around. People with no experience with the legal system, who couldn't afford to miss work to do research for their own cases at the public library, much less find an attorney who could help. People whose only crime was that a speeding ticket had gone unpaid when they'd been laid off; or the parole who lost his job due to his P.O.'s inflexible schedule and was now facing a return to prison.
These people needed help-- the kind that Nelson & Murdock were capable of supplying.
After both of them had passed the Jersey Bar, it was a simple matter of using what little savings they had managed to accrue to open the new location in Gotham City.
There wasn't a ticker tape parade by any means; but it seemed auspicious start to throw a Grand Opening, as Foggy had called it, and to at least invite the neighborhood by for some fingerfoods and refreshments; so they would know where to find them when they were needed.
The only problem was that the petty cash fund had dwindled with the move... "We have done so much, with so little, for so long, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing." Matt had quoted when Foggy was ready to call the whole thing off.
And so it came to pass that there was a Grand Opening at The Nelson and Murdock Legal Aid Clinic in midtown Gotham City; complete with one 'Happy Birthday' balloon (to which they had added the name of their center below, just in case anyone was confused about whose birthday it was), a veggie tray, some sort of hot dog on a tooth pick thing that Foggy said he'd had once in college at a fancy party and which Matt had dubiously agreed to, a platter of submarine sandwich quarters (because the table wasn't long enough to put the whole giant sub out on its own), plastic cups, plates and utensils donated as leftovers from someone's someone's wedding, and red and white striped cocktail napkins that were probably from Christmas but really who could say one way or the other.
"To Nelson and Murdock in Gotham City." Foggy proposed, raising a plastic glass of grape juice to his partner, beaming.
"Nelson and Murdock." Matt repeated with a smile, holding up his glass for Foggy to clink his against. Both drank, and Foggy heaved a contented sigh, looking around the new office.
"So... you think people are going to come, right? I mean we put out the sign."
Matt hid a laugh, and patted his friend on the shoulder. "Well if the smell of this good home cooking doesn't draw them in, I don't know what will."
