Dinah was surprised at how quickly the kids had acclimated to her change in hair color. To say they were surprised by it was an understatement- since most of them didn't recognize her- but they were still happy to have her around, and it wasn't long before they'd all grown accustomed to the idea of her with black hair.
And she grew accustomed to them.
For the past week, Dinah hadn't gone much of anywhere outside of the school. She'd helped out with the kids; getting them fed and off to school (not an easy feat with so many students) and looked after the place in the rare event that Danny had to go to the office. When he was able to have Jerwyn put out his fires, he'd stay and they'd spar, or talk, or train, or have lunch, or make up for lost time... Then there were Danny's classes to help with, homework, chores, dinners, laundry and all manner of other things to get done to keep the school running like a well-oiled machine. And the strangest part was that Dinah couldn't remember the last time she'd spent an entire week laughing, smiling and simply being. There were no bad guys who needed their faces kicked in (well, rarely), no corrupt presidential administration outside of what she read about in the paper or saw on the news.
It may not have seemed like a vacation to some, pulling your own weight at a charitable school for underprivileged kids, but to Dinah, it seemed pretty close to heaven.
Which may have been why she didn't hear them at first.
Most of the little kids had already been sent to bed and the older ones had been hounding Dinah and Danny all week. They said they knew all about those secret sparring sessions and they weren't budging until they actually got to see one (that didn't include tongue wrestling, Derek had specified to which Dinah had replied that Sifu Rand was going to wish she'd take it that easy on him).
She hadn't heard them at first, but as she was heading out to the mats, flashing an uncontrollable grin at Danny, she noticed something strange. The large, unfamiliar, black SUV parked across the street. Her heart skipped a few clumsy beats, and she had to remind herself not to jump to conclusions... it could have been anyone, or anything. But for some reason, that icky anxiety in the pit of her stomach refused to be subdued.
"Danny...?" She asked, not taking her eyes off of the car, though she was careful to keep any apprehension out of her voice-- at least while the kids were around. Still, her jaw was tight and her body was stiff, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.
It looked like her vacation was over.
