Pepper loved planning parties. It was, truth be told, her favorite part of her job. This one had been thrown together rather quickly, but she was still rather proud and excited about the outcome. Some last minute brainstorming with Tony had come up with a theme and the decision to restrict the guest list to a manageable number of more meaningful acquaintances, rather than the wilder and vaster number of hangers-on who usually attended his events, had made everything a lot easier.
Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk in Queens County, Long Island was one of the city's most popular destinations during the summer, containing fourteen miles of maintained beach and the only surfing areas in New York City. Pepper had arranged for a portion of the beach to remain open and private to their use from mid-afternoon for set up, through late into the night for their celebration. Private security had been hired to cordon off an area surrounding them - no one, including the press - were allowed in, not even by boat. Part of the ocean had been carefully marked for swimming as well, carefully lit, and a small army of lifeguards hired to stand watch. Beach swimming was hazardous enough in the daytime, but at night, with alcohol close at hand, she was taking every precaution without actually forbidding the activity.
Further up the beach, under a tent decorated with palm fronts and large, tropical blossoms, buffet tables had been set up for guests to serve themselves, and the open bar was close at hand. Those who arrived early enough got to watch the roasting of the pig.
In addition to swimming, guests were able to rent skates and explore the boardwalk, play volleyball on the beach, watch Polynesian dancers, fire dancers, hula dancers, and even get a lesson in hula themselves. A live band, playing music from the fifties through the seventies had been hired and a dance floor set up on a platform for guests to enjoy themselves.
And of course, anyone who just wanted to explore the beach was welcome to safely do so - it was a beautiful area, and a beautiful night.
Dressed festively to be a good hostess, Pepper felt good as the first guests began to arrive. She only hoped that everyone enjoyed themselves.
Happy Birthday, Tony.
