WHO: Thomas, Jamie and Anna Kemp
WHAT: Floof
WHEN: When Jamie was 9, so...eleven years ago!
WHERE: Their tiny apartment
WARNINGS: TBA but likely nothing

Someone out there really liked Thomas today.

He had left Jamie with his sister that afternoon while he attended one of his later classes. There had been very little in the cupboards, but Thomas had planned to swing by the food bank after his class ended in order to fill it up again. He got paid in a few days anyway, so they would be just fine.

Better than fine, since the moment Thomas had gotten there, a large donation from a local bakery had come in and since the workers knew he had a son, he had been allowed to take a little something extra special home with him. It was heading towards the end of November and that was holiday season. Since people tended to be more giving during the holidays it always meant getting to take home more food from his food bank shop.

Thomas kicked the door to announce his presence, since his hands were full of shopping bags. He heard his older sister laugh and then, once she had correctly assessed it was Thomas, she pulled the door open. "I can't even see you behind those bags, Tommy," she chuckled, taking one from him and placing it on the counter.

"You should have seen me climbing the stairs," Thomas laughed. "Jamie! I have a surprise!" He had been gone several hours and by now it was after dinner time. Usually Anna made Jamie some mac and cheese on the nights Thomas had later classes, but since there hadn't been any, dinner would be a little late and Jamie was probably pretty hungry. Thankfully that wasn't going to last long.

Jamie had spent most of the evening doing his homework or doodling while talking to his aunt Anna. He had been getting kind of hungry, but sometimes, as he'd learned early on, you just had to wait for things.

When he heard his dad come home, he popped up and threw his arms around his dad's waist. "Dad, you're home!" he cheered, beaming up at him.

"Am I? What a shame, I thought I was in Halloweentown," he said, moving to kneel and pull Jamie into a hug. "Nah, Halloweentown doesn't have a Jamie. I'd rather be here. Anna, did you know I used to live in Halloweentown until I escaped?"

"Oh yeah?" she asked, absently, busying herself with the kettle instead of really listening. She clearly just wanted some tea.

"Yep. I was the resident Kissmonster." And then he proceeded to plant kisses all over Jamie's face as he growled in a comical fashion.

"Da-ad!" Jamie squealed, giggling as he fought (not terribly hard) to get free. "We should go live in Halloweentown anyway, that'd be pretty cool." His stomach chose that moment to growl, and he looked up at his dad. "Can we have dinner know that you're home?" he asked.

"Uh oh, you have a tummymonster," Thomas said with a grin. "Of course we can!" Thomas stood and then he scooped Jamie up, setting him on the kitchen counter like he always did. Thomas just liked being at eye-level with Jamie instead of looking down at him all the time.

"I have a surprise first though," he said with a grin. Money had always been tight in their little household and though it had gotten better in the last few years, there still wasn't much left over to buy fun things. Jamie got a cake on his birthday and sweets when he stayed with his grandparents, but while he was at home it wasn't often he would get special treats. That was why managing to procure an entire dozen doughnuts at the foodbank had been something of a miracle. It wasn't just one treat, it was twelve.

"We should probably have these after dinner, but I wanted to show them to you," he said, pulling the box of assorted doughnuts out of the bag. "We can have them for dessert!" he said, already going to grab a pot to make dinner in.

Jamie's eyes lit up, and he grinned with delight at the sight of the doughnuts. "Awesome!" he cheered, doing a slight happy dance in his spot on the counter. "They look great, thanks Dad."

He swung his feet in the air as he watched his dad start dinner, happy that he was finally home and they could eat. "My teacher hung one of my drawings behind her desk today," he said, happy to chatter about anything since he couldn't really help. "She says I have an eye for shading."

Watching Jamie do a little happy dance melted Thomas' heart and he caught Anna giving him an amused look at the way Thomas was clearly trying not to show how emotional he was. He shot a look back at her before turning back to the dinner. "I got lots of great stuff today too, so I'm making mac and cheese and chicken nuggets and you can have as much as you want."

That was something else Jamie didn't usually get, and as much as it bothered Thomas, at least his son alwas had dinner with very few exceptions. "You can have seconds or thirds even."

Jamie bounced out of sheer joy, he couldn't remember the last time they'd had so much food he liked, let alone this much of it. "All the nuggets," he said happily. "Well. Maybe not all of them. You guys can have some too."

"Oh well, thank you, you are very generous," Thomas laughed, and Anna joined him.

"Such a kind heart. Don't worry about me though, I'll grab something on the way home." And Thomas knew no matter how much he insisted it was fine, his sister wouldn't eat a bite of his food. She was the only person in his family who had an inkling of how bad things could get for Thomas, and he knew she wouldn't feel right eating at his house even though he didn't mind.

"You just want Subway," he joked, so Jamie might not catch on to what was happening. "I've seen her put away two footlongs in five minutes, Jamie," he said, as he placed the nuggets on a baking sheet and slid them into the oven.

"You liar. It was totally ten minutes!"

"I try my very best," Jamie said grandly, which was ruined by the fact that he dissolved into giggles a moment later.

"No way," he said, looking at Anna in slight awe. "I can't even finish one!"

"Yeah, but you're a munchkin," Anna said, moving closer to him so she could kiss Jamie's nose. "The cutest munchkin!"

"It's true, I checked," Thomas added, happily stirring the pasta. "So, mister artist, do you know what your class will be working on next after shading?" He was glad he wasn't the only one who realised how very talented Jamie was. He kind of wanted to hug Jamie's teacher for praising him.

Jamie giggled and stuck out his tongue. "Follow the yellow brick road!" he giggled.

He shook his head. "Something about colors, I think? But I know what the primary and secondary colors are, so I don't know."

Anna laughed and she was about to burst into song when Thomas placed his hand over her mouth and stared at Jamie with wide eyes. Anna should never be allowed to sing.

With his hand still over Anna's mouth, he said, "well I look forward to colourful artwork for the fridge!" and then he pulled his hand back like it had been burned. "Ew, did you just lick me?"

Anna just grinned evilly and shrugged.

"I'll bring home a bunch for you!" Jamie promised, laughing at the antics of his father and aunt. "Ew, aunt Anna, that's gross," he giggled.

"It was pretty gross," Anna agreed. "At least it wasn't your right hand," and then Anna made a obscene gesture and Thomas' jaw dropped.

"Anna!" he hissed, but his tone was amused. He was just glad Jamie was too young to get a wank joke.

...probably.

"Will you get out!" he laughed. "Go eat your several feet of sandwiches. Go on, get!"

Anna giggled and she downed the rest of her tea before moving to grab her purse. "Okay okay, I'm going!" She didn't leave before hugging Thomas and then planting a kiss on Jamie's nose. "You be a good boy for your dad, hmm?"

"He always is," Thomas said, smiling warmly.

"See you in a few days, okay, Kiddo?" she asked, ruffling his hair. "And make sure Tommy eats one of the raspberry-filled doughnuts, they're his favourite. That's your job!"

Jamie just laughed. "Cross my heart," he promised, drawing an X over his heart. "He can have all the ones like that, I want one of the ones with sprinkles. Cause sprinkles are awesome." He leaned forward to hug Anna. "Come back soon, aunt Anna."

"I always do, little man," she said fondly, giving him another kiss before whisking out the door.

Thomas smiled at Jamie, and he ruffled his son's hair. He would have given the boy every last raspberry-filled doughnut if Jamie had wanted them, and Anna knew that. Hell, Thomas would give Jamie the food off his plate and had on more than several occasions. Anything to keep his son healthy and happy. If the boy wanted sprinkles though, Thomas was just glad they had ones with sprinkles.

"Are you aware," Thomas said sweetly, "that I love you more than anything? Even more than mac and cheese, and I really love mac and cheese."

"Well I love you more than doughnuts," Jamie told him. "And doughnuts are pretty awesome. But it's cause you're the coolest dad. Obviously."

Thomas beamed at Jamie and moved in to wrap his arms around the young boy. He was just so precious, and sometimes Thomas couldn't really believe Jamie had come from him.

Well. Most likely.

It didn't matter anyway, Jamie was his son, no matter what.

After a quick kiss on Jamie's head, Thomas returned to the stove to stir the pasta and then he checked on the nuggets. "Just about ready, Kiddo. Can you set the table? Need help down or can you do a big jump?"

"I can do it," Jamie said, sliding down off the counter and heading over to the table. He set a plate and glass in front of each of the chairs, then grabbed forks from the drawer. He grabbed the ketchup from the fridge and brought it to the table for his nuggets, then went back to stand next to his dad. "All done," he reported.

Thomas turned to grin at his son, who looked pleased at his work. "And you did a fantastic job too!" He pulled the nuggets out of the fridge and switched the stove off before carrying everything (and hot pads) to the table.

"Here we go, Kiddo. Food time. And remember, if you need more you can have more, and there's dessert too. Okay?" Usually Thomas was going on and on about there being no seconds, so it was nice to say something different for once.
