"Uh oh, you have a tummymonster," Thomas said with a grin. "Of course we can!" Thomas stood and then he scooped Jamie up, setting him on the kitchen counter like he always did. Thomas just liked being at eye-level with Jamie instead of looking down at him all the time.
"I have a surprise first though," he said with a grin. Money had always been tight in their little household and though it had gotten better in the last few years, there still wasn't much left over to buy fun things. Jamie got a cake on his birthday and sweets when he stayed with his grandparents, but while he was at home it wasn't often he would get special treats. That was why managing to procure an entire dozen doughnuts at the foodbank had been something of a miracle. It wasn't just one treat, it was twelve.
"We should probably have these after dinner, but I wanted to show them to you," he said, pulling the box of assorted doughnuts out of the bag. "We can have them for dessert!" he said, already going to grab a pot to make dinner in.
