WHO: Lyra and Erato
WHEN: Thursday 16th, afternoon
WHERE: Dangling down the side of Erato's office block
WHAT: I know you! Wait what?

There was a storm blowing in, still a couple of hours away but from her position hanging a hundred and fifty feet in the air Lyra could already feel the wind starting to turn. Looking at the approaching weather, her supervisor Les had already decided to ground the team just as soon as they were done on this office block. It meant the last job of the day would have to be postponed, which meant less pay, and normally Lyra should have had tomorrow free to do the job then instead but she’d said she’d work at Taco Bell to cover some sickness. Had to keep the Taco bosses happy – had to make up for saying no when they asked her to work Saturday, cuz Saturday was when she was meeting her cousins.

Manager Ainsley looked less than happy about the no, despite how apologetic she made herself. It worried her a tiny bit, she needed him to keep calling her first when people called in sick; Taco Bell was a reliable chunk of hours and she could eat for free on the job and if she lost shifts as punishment for not being reliable – read, forever on call – it was gonna hurt.

February, and a hike in the rent, was only a month and a half away. But it was gonna be okay. Lyra’d get her scheduling on and make it all work out. Jocelyn might be looking grim and determined about it, but since her birthday Lyra found it hard to be disheartened by anything; the night had just been so good and she’d felt just… so goddamn wonderful. Rosario loved her, Patrick was so excited by getting to know her, and Avery thought she was hot. Home might be a fucking challenge right now, but god, what a liferaft she had.

Besides, Patrick's connections had hooked her up with another job prospect and she was hoping she could fit in several hours there if she started early in the mornings, before a Taco shift, on the days she wasn't washing windows. Her income in that area was already taking a dive; today was part of a bigger trend as the weather got colder and wetter and windier and more frozen. Less demand, less literal ability to work, less need for contractors by the business and less hours in a safety harness for Lyra.

And carpenter Will wasn't super far away, at least the job was still in Brooklyn. Speaking of close jobs, Nat's shop was close too, although as she’d learned yesterday afternoon, nothing was really close when you had to lug a bar fridge back to your apartment to fix it.

At least Jemma's dad Dante was around for the holiday season, so Lyra hadn’t had to worry about guarding the torn out guts of a bar fridge from a three year old's curiosity. Her mom had been home, though.

Her mom had been home a lot this week, which was… not great. Two days after meeting Patrick again and one day after her long conversation with the priest, she'd broken up with her boyfriend. Lyra did not want to examine what this meant, so instead of wondering (or asking) she was simply looking at it through the same annoyed lens as Jocelyn was. Jem being suddenly single (single and not looking) meant she was eating at home more, which meant they were spending more on food, which made a difference because Jem's philosophy when it came to food was 'treat yo'self' which didn't gel with a Jocelyn budget.

As Lyra dragged the fridge into the kitchen it was impossible to miss how badly the Jocelyn budget had been abused. Jem was baking, and all sorts of fancy ingredients (cream cheese! Two kinds of chocolate and fresh fruit!) spread out over the benches.

"Is that cashew butter?" Lyra had asked, rubbing the strained muscles in her arms as she looked over the carnage. The packaging she recognised; one of the bougie places the next block over. "What are you doing?"

"Church bake sale!" Jem had said brightly, laying out some paper cupcake liners patterned with gold. "I volunteered. Thought it was time I gave something back… I'm doing a triple batch! We could take some to Patrick even."

"Um," Lyra had said uncertainly, not sure she was ready for her parental worlds to overlap again. Like ever again, at this rate. "Did you buy all this stuff?"

"Oh don't start, baby," Jem had sounded a little put-upon. "It's for a good cause."

Lyra had decided not to start, but only because she hadn't been sure she'd be able to stop quickly, and she'd needed to see how dead the bar fridge was. She’d dragged it into her room, cleared a space that wasn’t really big enough on the floor, and put her headphones in so she wouldn’t hear the inevitable eruption when Jocelyn got home and saw what Jem had made of her budget.

At least the really rather brutal cold was a whole world away from life at home. Cold, sure, but Lyra was layered up like a lasagna and feeling like a pioneering Arctic explorer, and the hat that Jocelyn had knitted for her was undeniably cute. Even with her helmet on over it, the city was a mass of chilly low cloud behind her, and it made for some great instagram shots.

Take the ‘pioneering Arctic explorer’ vibes away, though, and it was boring. One window was the same as the next, and buildings like this had hundreds. There was some skill involved in it, sure, but no creativity, no creation. She was just cleaning bird shit and city shit off glass, over and over and over, and some days felt so long she half expected to have lost another three months when she stepped back onto solid concrete and unclipped her harness.

But, at least once she’d got the knack she could let her mind wander. She could go over the memory of harmonizing with her dad at karaoke, or rehash the things she wished she’d yelled at Apollo (not fun, but not boring!) or think about what it was gonna be like to meet her cousins in person for the first time, or if she really wanted to warm up, like today she really wanted to warm up, she could think about making out with Avery on his couch, his tongue in her mouth, his fingers finding their way between her legs and not stopping in a way that was just… so damn hot.

Imagination and memory, the best weapons against the cold and the crap of the world.

With the glare from the sky reflection off the glass, Lyra didn’t even notice the woman on the other side of the window till her face was like, right there, and Lyra jumped in surprise and immediately felt caught out. She had to laugh at herself, because it wasn’t like the woman could tell what she’d been thinking. With a sheepish grin, Lyra waved her squeegee at her through the glass.

The glass was thick, double glazed to protect the delicate office workers from the nasty outdoors. Inside Lyra’s apartment she could feel the cold air billowing in off her windows in the dead of winter, she bet that was something no one who worked this high up ever had to deal with.

The thickness of the glass, though, also made it hard to hear. Did the woman just say she knew her? “What?” Lyra called back, pretty sure she’d heard right. “How?” She peered in closer, angling herself a little so her body blocked the glare from the grey sky behind her. The woman was… absolutely stunning, actually, but not familiar. Lyra would remember meeting anyone who looked like her.

It was pretty hard to hear her, but Erato managed to make out what the girl was saying, mostly through lip reading. “I’m your aunt!” she called, bouncing slightly with excitement. “I saw you on Instagram!” Apollo would be absolutely tickled by this meeting when she told him about it later!

Oh… what the fuck?! Lyra pressed her hand against the window and stared, thinking (not for the first time, or the fifth, or the hundredth, honestly) how on earth was this possible? Did she have some kinda magnet in her, now?!

The woman’s enthusiasm was infectious, though, and not dissimilar to Patrick’s energy when they’d first met. And the hair was like his, even! Only, it looked like it had a better relationship with a blowdryer than Patrick’s did. “Oh my god?!” she exclaimed back, laughing as the shock gave way to delight. “No way?? You’re a saint?!”

Erato squinted. “I’m what? I’m faint? It’s this glass, it’s so thick-” She knocked against it, and glanced about to find something she could open even though she knew very well that there wasn’t anything. “Your father told me all about you!”

That bit she got, clear enough, and it warmed her from the inside as much as anything (but starting from a very, very different place as thoughts of Avery’s fingers…) Her dad was talking about her to his family? And showing them her Instagram (it was hard to mishear Instagram, no matter what was in the way) And… and he was proud of her? It choked her up with how awesome it felt. “Dar…erca? No… Are you Brigid?” she asked, taking a guess based on the hair and the illustrations in her saint book. Brigid had been the one depicted with the flowing red hair, Darerca had been illustrated as a nun. This woman had a Celtic look about her, the hair and the skin, like something out of a ballad almost. Not like a nun at all. “You’re so pretty!”

Maybe that was a really shallow thing to say to a saint, but Lyra was hanging by a rope umpteen stories up and could totally blame it on adrenaline and excitement. Besides, Patrick had never minded about anything silly slipping out of her mouth, why would his sister, right?

Erato blinked, confused. Was she what? Kinda personal for shouting through a window at someone you just met. "Nobody would say that about me," she said with a little laugh. This shouting thing was getting silly, and the poor girl was on the outside of a window way up in the air in the cold. She pulled out her phone and tapped out a message, then held it up to the glass.

CAN WE MEET ON THE GROUND?

Confusion flickered over Lyra’s face too, echoing the other woman’s expression. Okay, not Brigid? But a bit of a weird reaction? She was relieved when the phone got involved, though. Good old phones. Can’t go wrong with them. “Yeah!” Lyra shouted back, giving her a big thumbs up. “I’m working though. Half hour?” Instead of miming it, she drew a big 30? 40? on the wet window, grinned through it, and then wiped it away.

This was awesome, she thought. Not only was she meeting another aunt, and had it confirmed all over again that her dad thought she was cool, but now she had a challenge; get the rest of this done as fast as possible!

Sure, she was just gonna have to wait for the guys to be finished as well before they could call it done, but if they saw her speeding through it they were gonna up their pace as well. They were dudes who either had a decade or a foot and a half on her, they weren't gonna want to be left in her dust.

There was a cafe near the building where Erato stopped for coffee sometimes, and she brought up their website and held it up to the window again so Rosario would know where to go. Then she blew her a kiss and retreated back to her laptop to finish up her paperwork as soon as she could, so she could go down and get them a table.

The cafe was a cute little place, with an aesthetic that involved a lot of indoor plants and old books on shelves, and mismatched teacups and saucers and silver spoons. It was exactly the romantic type of place Erato loved. She found a table near the back and ordered herself a fluffy cappuccino (why did nobody order cappuccinos anymore?) and two slices of lemon cake, and settled herself down to read a book from her bag until her guest arrived.

It took a bit longer than half an hour to finish up, but that wasn’t Lyra’s fault. She was done and back down on the ground when she said she would be, but her colleagues, who apparently didn't have as fragile male egos as she'd counted on, took longer getting down. And then they had to pack everything away in the van and that felt like it took forever.

Lyra had stripped off her windproof layer at the van, and tried to grab a quick look at herself in the mirror up front without the guys noticing. Her aunt just looked so put together, and graceful in the way that Lyra imagined saints might be if they hadn’t been influenced by the biggest drunken parade of the year. Still, Lyra’s hair was never going to look neat when it’d been under both a woolen hat and a safety helmet for most of the day, so maybe she’d just leave the hat on, let it hide the flyaways. It was a cute hat, anyway.

Nerves were bubbling in her stomach as she stepped into the cafe, and seeing her aunt in the flesh without a pane of glass between them just upped the bubbles considerably. That woman, right there, was more family. Lyra's skin tingled.

“Hi again,” she grinned, all nervous bubbling positive energy as she arrived at the table. “This is so weird and exciting and - and weird! I’ve never been recognised from Instagram before!”

Erato was getting herself fully lost in the story, despite having read it a dozen times before, and when her niece joined her, she looked up with a face full of the residual emotion from full immersion in her book. “Oh! Hello!” she said, and got up to pull her into a tight hug. She was wearing a sweater dress with leggings and boots, and her hair was in a long dutch braid over her shoulder so it wouldn’t get snarled in the wind. Perfect Pinterest aesthetic. “I have been bugging him to finally meet you, and look, here you are! Fate has made it happen for us. What a delicious meet-cute we have had. Can I order you something? I got you a cake and it was such a temptation not to just eat it and order you another.” Of course her figure looked like she’d never eaten a cake in her life, but who was counting?

Lyra squeaked as she was hugged, but it didn’t stop her hugging tightly back, her heart racing in her breast. This was family! Brand new, excited-to-meet-her family! She felt guilty, just for a short pang before she pulled away, because Rosario wasn’t getting this, because – aside from Thalia – Rosario’s new family was batshit. (And, okay, Lyra's mom was having a bit of a batshit moment of her own right now, so it wasn’t like Lyra’s family was perfect or anything, and it wasn’t Lyra’s fault Rosario’s family was Like That, so Lyra forcibly took the guilt and put it away, cuz it wasn’t hers.)

“It is so good to meet you!” she enthused, pulling back from the hug and only holding back from asking who, exactly, she was, because she had important questions of her own to answer first. “I’ll eat cake! And something warm? My fingers are still a bit…” she rubbed her hands together briskly, letting the action speak for itself about the temperature of her hands. “Mocha, if you’re offering?”

“Mocha it is!” Erato jumped up to order for her, and when she came back she was already just brimming with curiosity. She sat down and folded her fingers together, resting her chin on her hands so she could examine this new person most avidly. “This must have been such a surprise to you, right? Learning all this new stuff? Does it intrigue you? It intrigues a lot of people, but it terrifies others. I think it’s romantic. Isn’t he just the best?” She paused for a breath to let the young lady get some words in too, unlacing her fingers to pick up her coffee cup.

The way she was looking at Lyra gave her more tingles, it was a devoted kind of attention that people didn’t usually show, especially strangers. Unless they were on a date, maybe? But guys didn’t, or at least no guy had ever looked at Lyra like that, and neither had the one girl she’d dated. Lyra kind of loved it. Her aunt was so interested in her, genuinely interested.

“Uh huh yeah, such a surprise, and yeah defo intriguing. I’m kinda hard to terrify,” she said, with a cocky kind of grin, since the adrenaline rush from working at such heights was still hanging around in her body. “You might’ve noticed, hah. And he totally is, he’s like… I’ve never met any man quite that sweet before? And just, thoughtful? Careful? But I guess it all makes sense cuz of who he is, and I’m sorry, but I didn’t actually catch who you were? It was kinda hard to hear you through that glass up there…”

Careful? Thoughtful? Sweet? Perhaps Rosario was getting a side of Apollo that Erato rarely saw. Maybe being a parent was changing him. How lovely!

“Oh! Silly me, duh! Well I’m Jasmine when I’m at work. That’s where I was, up in that office, I’m a book editor, I manage authors to keep them going with their novels and so on. But I’m Erato when I’m at home. Has he introduced you to any others of us yet, or do I get to be the first one?” She was quite excited by that notion. She did like being the first one in.

“Oh, um,” Lyra’s face faltered in confusion a bit, because that wasn’t any of the names she was familiar with. Definitely not any from her book, nor any she remembered from Sunday School, but… there were so many, after all, weren’t there? Was it rude to google her right now? Oh my god, it was so rude to google her! Just be honest! “Sorry, I don’t, uh, recognise your name? But it’s awesome to meet you, and no, no I haven’t met anyone else yet but I’ve talked to Aderyn and Iestyn online and we’re gonna meet soon, and their dad and - and everyone else I guess! But you’re my first aunt!”

Aunt or, something like aunt? But Lyra didn’t focus too much on terminology. Patrick had already talked about his goddaughter and his ward like they were no less daughters for not being blood, so it made sense he did the same with people he considered sisters. If she wanted to be Lyra’s aunt Lyra was more than happy to be her niece. A niece! “I’ve never been anyone’s niece before,” she grinned widely.

“Oh-” Erato faltered just slightly. Apollo hadn’t mentioned her? After she’d faithfully listened to him go on and on about Cin and Rosario? Stroked his hair and promised him everything would work out? Endured and even celebrated a mortal taking that exalted place by his side once again? “He’s never said my name? I’m the Muse of Romantic Poetry. Surely he told you that, at least?” She didn’t know the two names Rosario had said either, and she was starting to wonder if she’d got things wrong.

“Oh- oooh,” Lyra tried to do a quick mental recalibration. Aunt, she’d said, but now she was a Muse? And Patrick was dating Thalia so Erato was one of Thalia’s sisters and maybe she considered that an aunt? Lyra didn’t know – immortals were weird! But maybe being immortal was like… being stuck on school camp together? You bonded really hard with everyone you were trapped in the same situation with and that made you all feel like family? “Sorry, I didn’t realise you were Thalia’s sister, I thought you were a saint!” She laughed, really hoping that wasn’t offensive, and reigned it in with a warm hopeful smile.

And the smile was still slightly confused about what was going on, and how all these relationships fit together, and what it all meant, but… she could roll with it! She was great at rolling with it! So what if her dad’s girlfriends’ sister considered herself an aunt? It wasn’t like that was the weirdest thing ever.

So he’d mentioned Thalia and not her??? Erato wasn’t very good at hiding her emotions, and the hurt was plain. “Why would Musagetes mention Thalia and not me??” she exclaimed, just as the server came over with Rosario’s coffee. If that even was Rosario! With a pout, Erato pulled out her phone and scrolled to find the photo Apollo had shown her. Yes, that was her, with her dark-haired friend; Apollo had said, this is my daughter and her friend-

She turned her phone around and showed the screen to the girl in front of her. “This is you, isn’t it?” she demanded, pointing at it. “You and your friend?”

Okay, now Lyra really didn’t know what was going on, and Erato was upset and talking too fast for Lyra to say no, no one talked about Thalia and excluded Erato, it was just she’d met Thalia, and not her, and don’t be upset, please – and then the phone was in her face. “Y-yeah, that’s me and Roz?” she agreed, though it really was more of a question than an answer, but then she took a deep breath of realisation. “You think I’m Rosario,” she exclaimed. “That’s why- no, no I’m Lyra.”

Erato's mouth opened into a round O of surprise as she turned her phone back to look at the picture. That was- oh how embarrassing! She covered her face with her hands for a moment, and then gave a little laugh. "Oh no! Oh how silly- but I can feel that you are a demigod, so- so who are you then? How do you know Thalia?" At least Apollo hadn't forgotten her! She'd known he would never do that!

As much as she’d been told ‘demigod’ was a catch-all term, Lyra still wasn’t sure how she felt about being called one. At first it had been the coolest, but lately, with her mom looking at her… different… it was a little too much. That said, with Erato’s giggle and her flustered blush it was hard to imagine anything she said as being too much. Lyra gave the weird feelings a shove and set them aside.

“Thalia’s dating my dad, Patrick,” Lyra said, her confusion receding to be replaced by the buzzy thrill of saying the words my dad to someone, and meeting someone new, someone special. Her body was pretty primed for buzzy thrills today anyway, it came naturally, and then she was chatting away. “That’s why I thought you must be a saint, also the red hair? Me and Patrick have that in common, so I thought maybe you too? But you’re a Muse, wow. Of romantic poetry? Wow. And Rosario’s aunt.” That was also a wow. Rosario’s aunt, which meant Apollo’s sister, which Lyra was less comfortable with, but Patrick had been very reassuring when he said Thalia was nothing like Apollo, and she hadn’t been, and he also talked highly of Clio, too. Besides, Erato blushed. Lyra was pretty sure Apollo would never.

"Patrick? Oh the saint? OH that's what you said!" Erato laughed again and held up the end of her braid. "Unrelated red hair! Oh wow I must have startled you- but it explains everything." Now that she knew Apollo hadn't neglected her, her mood brightened considerably. "I'm sorry I'm not your aunt. You're adorable. Your insta is cuuuute, I might have stalked it a smidgey bit. Apollo is always talking about you- I mean, Rosario. I was curious. Shall we be insta friends?" She was already making sure she had Lyra followed, and sent a DM with a winky kiss face so Lyra would know which account was hers. "I post so many pictures of my cats so I hope you're prepared!"

It was really hard not to want to like someone who called her adorable, and cute, someone who was excited about her Insta (yes! Thank you! She put a lot of effort into choosing what went on there!) Also, someone who incidentally was immortal and stunningly beautiful. It was almost exactly how the sorority girls had got her… with one big difference. None of the theta girls had cared about Rosario. Erato was Rosario’s aunt. Big difference.

Also, Lyra knew exactly how Rosario felt about Apollo talking about her, and even Erato mentioning it awoke a protective flare in Lyra. That… loose lipped rat bastard! No, that was an insult to rats, who were smart. That roach.

“He does?” she asked, diplomatically aiming the flare away from Erato, as she multitasked with her phone, sending a smiling cat face in return and following her back. “What kind of things does he say about her?”

Erato waved a hand in the air. "How clever she is, how much potential, how beautiful," she said, not picking up on any of Lyra's negative reaction. Apollo was always so doting when he was in love. "Honestly, he's so effusive. All he wants to do is shower her with gifts and attention. But that’s how he is, you know?” She shrugged and picked up her cake fork to take a little bite of her remaining slice. It just was how Apollo was. Generous to a fault with those he loved. She gave Lyra a smile. “How about her? Is she excited to know who her father is? He said she’s been a bit cautious, but she needn’t worry. He’s no Ares when it comes to his kids, you know? Yeesh.” She pulled her mouth wide in a grimace at the thought. Yes, Rosario was definitely lucky there!

Clever, damn right Rosario was clever. Full of potential, fuck yeah, obviously. Beautiful? Was that creepy AF coming from Rosario’s bio dad or was it only creepy AF because Lyra had slept with him? He’d called her beautiful too and remembering it made her feel weird. He was literally, like, a hundred times their age.

“Oh, uh, shook,” Lyra answered, keeping it vague. She wasn’t going to get into the true depths of Rosario’s feelings, no way, that was a confidence she wasn’t going to betray. Girl didn’t need people talking ‘bout her behind her back. Girl already had enough of that. But ‘shook’ covered a lot of bases.

“What do you mean by that, no Ares?” she asked, deeply curious by Erato’s grimace, and loving that she was talkative enough that an opportunity to bounce the conversation in a different direction immediately presented itself. She picked up her mocha, leaning her elbows against the table. Getting another inside opinion about Apollo might turn out to be really useful. “What is he like, with other kids? Have you met lots of them?”
