WHO: Freyr, Friar Tuck, Freya if she's there
WHEN: Saturday afternoon
WHERE: Freyr's
WHAT: Visits
WARNINGS: TBA

Ever since Freyr's post, Tuck had worried about the other man. Sure they didn't know each other very well, but Tuck had really appreciated the donations to his foodbank, and he had enjoyed Freyr's company. As such, he had mixed up a poultice to ease joint pain, just as Freyr had asked. He had also baked some Norwegian grovbrød, as well as krumkaker with lingonberry preserves even though Freyr had told him there was no need to. Tuck would be Tuck.

He messaged the other man to let him know he was coming, as Freyr had requested. Then he went to the address Freyr had provided and buzzed up.

Freyja had contacted her building manager the first day she'd been with Freyr to ask him if he would feed her cat for a couple days, promising she was looking for someone to do it properly but that a family emergency had come up. She had barely finished explaining before he agreed to feed Honkers for as long as she needed. He tried to insist on not taking payment for it, but Freyja insisted harder, and Freyja was as willful as she was beautiful. Few humans could stand up to both of those traits working against them. A soft glance from Freyja had made the most hardened of warriors ready to give up their life and lands for an ounce of her attentions.

And so Honkers was being looked after like the king he believed himself to be, and Freyja's only real worry was that he would get spoiled. But the last thing she'd done with Honkers had been to feed him strips of salmon from her hand, so the 'spoiled' boat had probably sailed.

When Freyr told her that this Friar Tuck was coming around - Freyja had only the most passing knowledge of English folklore - she told him to sit and relax and that she wanted to be the first to greet him. She didn't need to tell Freyr in actual words that she wanted to check out if he seemed dangerous before leaving him alone with her brother. He'd just been through something traumatic, and all Freyja wanted to do was make it better, in any way she could.

And so she answered the door to her brother's apartment and gave a warm smile to the man there, wanting to believe the best (but prepared, with knife in her boot, for the worst.)

"Halló," she greeted him in her melodic accent, suggestive of the lands of the Norse but not directly from any one place. "You must be Friar Tuck. I'm Freyja, Freyr's sister."

"Hello, Freyja," Tuck said, shifting his bag to one hand so he could extend the other to shake. "Very pleased to meet you. I brought your brother a few things round to help ease his pain and hopefully cheer him up."

"A pleasure." Freyja reached out to take his hand and shake it. "He'll appreciate seeing-" She'd been going to say 'seeing a familiar face' before remembering that no one was familiar to her brother. So she corrected herself. "He'll appreciate the friendly company. Please do come in," she said, leading him into the kitchen so that he could put the bag down. "That bread smells wonderful, did you bake it?"

Tuck smiled and he followed her in, hefting the bag onto the counter once they reached the kitchen. "I did. I watched about ten videos on how to do it from scratch. Some in Norwegian, with the translation turned on!" he laughed. "And the krumkaker I made as well, though I admit to buying the lingonberry preserves," he joked. "He also mentioned aching joints so I made him a poultice to ease his pain."

Freyja's impression of this man was already becoming a very positive one, and she didn't sense any deception here. (She was having to rely only on her normal intuition for that, her magic still recovering from the unexpected portal it had been asked to create.) "I know he'll be grateful," she smiled, peeking into the bag. "I'll go get him, give me a minute."

She wandered towards the bedroom and, after opening the door, looked in on her brother. She'd asked him to wait, and didn't care if that had come across as paranoid. "He seems very nice," she told Freyr, coming over to take his hands. "But I won't be far away if anything goes wrong."

"I'm sure it will be fine," Freyr said, standing up with Freyja's help. "Bless you, dear sister."

Although he hadn't eaten in months, he hadn't been alive for a lot of that to waste away excessively, but his body still ached from the torment. With the help of hat baths soaking in oils and minerals, the joint pain had lessened, but it meant he still walked very stiffly. He was also quite pallid having not seen sunlight in too long, and considering he was a man who usually spent so much time outdoors, it made him look different than before.

He walked stiffly down the stairs, holding onto the stair rail for support, and smiled in greeting when he saw Friar Tuck.

"Good afternoon," he said with a nod and a warm smile, coming through towards the kitchen. That sunny demeanor was still there, dampened though it had been. "Please excuse the overly-cautious welcome. My sister cares for me very deeply."

"I could never begrudge anyone being careful and taking care of the people they love," he said, moving to support Freyr if he needed it. "Can I help you, or are you alright?"

"I'm alright. I'm getting better, I'm just a bit stiff. Thank you." Freyr made his way to the kitchen. "Would you like tea or coffee?" he asked, going for a coffee for himself. He could use the energy boost.

"Coffee sounds great, actually," Tuck said brightly. He returned to the bag and pulled out the bread and dessert he had made. "I made you grovbrød and krumkaker. I know you said you didn't need it, but I thought a little taste of home might lift the spirits. And this is sort of what I do," Tuck laughed. "And this," he pulled a jar of the poultice out, "is for your joints. It doesn't smell great, but it works." He had taught Francis how to make it after his first incarceration with the sheriff. His arms had been tied behind his back for so long, that his shoulders had ached terribly. The poultice had eased his suffering.

Freyr looked around in mild surprise. "But it's not Christmas! What a treat," he said, leaning over to look at the cone-shaped cookies. "And bread too! You are too kind to a stranger like myself. Make sure to keep those preserves far apart from the poultice!" He went back to making his coffee in a French press, flexing his wrists a few times before he poured it out. "I have creamer and sugar just here, please help yourself. Perhaps you will slice the bread to accompany the coffee, and we can sit down in the living room." He gestured towards the knife block and the cutting board that for today would do as a serving platter too.

"I can do that!" Tuck said cheerfully. He went to slice the bread up, and then he prepared his coffee, liberal with the cream and sugar. It was that kind of day. Then he carried it all through to the living room so poor Freyr didn't have to attempt to do so.

"I've been trying to remember our prior conversation," Tuck said as he sat, "to see if I can jog your memory. I believe we spoke about the Merry Men's exploits in the forest."

"Oh, did we?" Freyr sat down with his coffee, and leaned across to the coffee table to collect a slice of buttered bread laden with preserve. He felt a little awkward preserving this lie that he was suffering from amnesia, but it was such a strange truth and he didn't want to stress people out by imagining demons everywhere like he was currently. He looked at Tuck, wondering how tough the man was with all of this stuff. "I'm glad we got on well, but I fear there is little chance of my memory being jogged. But I am willing to discuss it. What prompted that conversation?"

"You found out Much and I shared a home, so you asked if all the Merry Men lived in proximity to one another. I said my boyfriend is moving in with me, and a few others share another place. We all tend to group though, yes. And we discussed the past. Days in the forest. You made fun of my doilies," Tuck said with a chuckle which suggested he didn't mind in the least.

"Made fun? Oh..." Freyr frowned regretfully, wondering what the other him had done. He hoped he wouldn't have made fun of things to people who were just trying to be nice. Why would he want to know about how the Merry Men lived? Everything that creature did felt sinister. "But you said I donated to your... church?" he asked, trying to get a fuller picture of everything.

Tuck's brows furrowed as Freyr's tone turned. "It's aright, I didn't mind," Tuck was quick to add. "And yes, I'm the reverend of a small congregation. We focus on acts of service and community and you donated vegetables to our foodbank when we were running dangerously low. Much picked them up. Did you receive a head injury?" Tuck asked gently.

"Well..." Freyr pulled a face. "Yes... and no..." He set his coffee down carefully on a coaster. "The thing is... it is difficult to explain, and not particularly pleasant, and may change your view of the world. Would you still want to know?" He looked up, into Tuck's eyes, to try to see the truth of him.

Well now there was a question. Tuck considered it for a moment, but he decided he didn't mind his view of the world changing if it made him more aware of things. "I would," he resolved. "Believe me I have had my share of 'not particularly pleasant'. I don't mind you unburdening yours."

Freyr nodded and sat silent for a little while, pondering how to begin.

"So," he began, "I do not actually suffer from amnesia, although sometimes I wish that were the truth. I was replaced. The wizard Merlin called it a doppelganger, a troll-cursed demon that takes the forms of others. It took me captive and lived my life for me, although to what end, I cannot say. Freyja figured it out and killed it, although it is not permanently gone. It could be anyone. It could be you. I don't know for certain." He took a bit of his bread, appreciating the familiar taste of it.

Tuck's expression grew darker, the longer Freyr spoke. So was Freyr saying that Tuck hadn't even met him, he'd met an imposter. "Holy shit," Tuck breathed. "Freyr, I- I'm so sorry. Look," Tuck dug around in his pocket for a moment, until he pulled out his rosary. "I don't know if it helps, but most demons don't go in for religious iconography," he said, holding it up so the beads caught in the light. "And I tend to carry this around with me."

"I just have to trust you," Freyr said with a sigh, although the beads were somewhat of a reassurance. Trusting people had usually been a feature of his personality in the past, and it had taken a pretty severe knock. "I am trying to get my life back together, but it is small steps. I've taken two weeks sick leave from my business because I'm too afraid to look into the state of it yet."

Tuck returned the rosary to his pocket and he frowned. "I can't imagine," he breathed, sympathy lacing his voice. "You don't have to trust me, as it appears we've never met before today. I'd like to think you will be able to in time if you'd like that though," he said with a small smile. "Should we start over? My name is Michael Tuck. I come from Nottinghamshire, England. I was a Friar there, though to be honest, not a very good one," he chuckled.

"Then I am very pleased to meet you," Freyr nodded to Tuck in welcome, putting a hand to his breast and a short bow. "I suppose you already know who I am, but I am Freyr of the Vanir, for what it's worth. I suppose, since I have revealed my truth now, you can give me your opinion. How honest do you think I should be about what happened? I feel like it would worry a lot of people to know a creature can steal their identity. You seem to be taking it well enough."

"It happens a bit in the Good Book," Tuck said. "The Bible's a bit full of things like that. Though...seeing the way it affects people is vastly different to reading it. Some people very dear to me were held captive about half a year ago. While they were there, there was a demon who could take different forms. It made them believe their father had died in front of them, when he was alive and well. So it isn't new to me, though no less horrifying for that. For others, it may be quite the shock, yes."

He considered, for a moment, the crux of the question. "It may worry people, but forewarned is forearmed, yes? If they are aware of it, this thing might have less chance to catch someone unaware."

Freyr grimaced in sympathy to Tuck's story. "I hope that it would help. I don't know if it would have made a difference in my case." He chewed his bread thoughtfully. "This is very good, by the way. But the demon took on the guise of a woman I was sleeping with, and attacked me in my sleep. Next thing I know I was tied up in my own basement."

He hadn't even mentioned the worst part yet. He took a drink of coffee and tried to prime himself to talk about it.

Freyr nodded slowly. "It isn't even the worst part," he said, his voice low. "I've spent most of the last six months as a corpse. Every time I came back..." He drew his thumb across his throat. "Too much effort to keep me alive. Too risky for it. Freyja would've known in an instant if I'd been alive and she came close." He shuddered, feeling a little cold. "I do not wish that on anybody else."

Horror roiled in Tuck's stomach. Awful, twisted images of his own resuscitation bubbling to the surface of his mind, refusing to dissipate, floating there behind his eyes like oil on water. He had only had to suffer through that once. And he had thought that and three weeks in the sheriff's dungeon was bad-

"Freyr-" Tuck murmured, when his mouth could form words, "that's honestly one of the most horrifying things I have heard in a good long time. I'm so sorry you went through that."

Freyr didn't try to smile it off, but he acknowledged Tuck's sympathy. "I am still in the early days," he said seriously. "Having friends will help, I think, while I piece together what exactly has been made of my life. I don't wish to upset you, I hope you will be alright?"

A smile graced Tuck's lips then, even if it was smaller than usual. "You seem like a kind man, and one I would be glad to call friend," Tuck acknowledged. "I'll be fine. I was killed almost a year ago, and the coming back was- It was horrible. I suppose I was thinking of having to do that over and over."

Tuck shook his head, "I have a friend, an angel, who might be able to shed some light on your situation, should you want to ever go down that route. His name is also Michael."

"Oh, I've heard of the angel Michael." Freyr did have a slightly disapproving look on his face, because after all, Christianity did spell the end of his religion, but it was hardly Michael's fault. "You died recently? Then yes, you would have some idea of what I have experienced. What help do you think the angel would be?"

"If it was a Christian demon, Michael might know something about it. How to find him. How to keep him well away." Tuck had noticed the look and he added, "I was held captive recently. Michael was there to rescue me. He's a good man."

"As you say," Freyr said, accepting his word. "Perhaps I will then." He picked up his coffee again and let himself relax a bit against the sofa. "I know that you Merry Men are tight-knit in the stories. It's times like these we should be thankful for our families. My Freyja is the fighter, without her... well, things are a lot less exciting."

Thinking of his family could always pull a smile from Tuck, and now was no different. "I am always grateful for them," he nodded. "My boyfriend, Will Scarlet, he's more of a fighter than I am. And all of them definitely make things more exciting!"

"Boyfriend? Oh, good for you." Freyr had the horrified thought for a moment that the demon might have done things with his body and face that he certainly wasn't prepared for himself. The gays were fine, he just wasn't one. "We don't all need to be fighters, do we? The world has a place for all of us to get by."
