WHO Nina & Perseus
WHEN Friday afternoon
WHERE East Village
WHAT The conquest of a couch
WARNINGS tba, likely little

Nine didn't know a whole lot about Polish food, but the Polish restaurant behind her smelled pretty damn good from where she was sitting, on a very yellow sofa on the curb. She could see there was a menu in the window, but without getting up and abandoning her find, Nina couldn't read any of it.

Cabbage, was Nina's assumption. A lot of types of cabbage meals.

She was on her phone scrolling through instagram while she waited for Peter to show up. If he hadn't offered, she wasn't sure how she would get this thing all the way home. Without help she probably would have had to abandon it, which would have been a shame. She was already picturing it in her apartment.

"I think your firefighter strength is going to be more impressive than my noddle arms," Nina told him, lifting the sofa. (Which made her remember his arms when he'd taken his shift off, and the muscles of his chest.)

The sofa wasn't quite as heavy as she'd expected, but she still hoped she'd make it the whole way. "You're going backwards, sorry," she told Peter and slowly shifted in that direction, waiting until he recognised the movement before going any further. "But I promise to tell you if you're about to hit something."

Perseus laughed at that, "well thank you!" he grinned, easily moving backwards with the sofa. To him it felt like nothing, and he probably could have carried it himself, but that would have led to probably several questions he wasn't sure he could answer. "Nice day out, even looking at it backwards," he winked. "You still okay?"

"Yep! I could do this all day," she crowed confidently, while also trying to make sure she didn't lose her grip as they walked. "I didn't drag you away from anything important, right?"

God, she was adorable. "No! It's my day off so I was cleaning. I have scintillating life, Nina. Oh, the scandalous details of which orange-scented, antibacterial spray I used could keep you awake at night!"

"Lucky I'm hearing about it in the middle of the day!" Nina stepped over a rubbish bag on the curb. "I should have enough time to digest it before bed."

Perseus laughed again as they made their way towards her house. "If that had you on tenterhooks, just wait until you hear about my foray to the dog park!"

"The story with dogs sounds better than the one with cleaning products," Nina admitted, shifting her grip as they walked. "Gandalf is such a good boy."

"Gandalf is the goodest boy!" Perseus laughed. "Dammit, should have led with that story then. You need a rest yet?" he asked, just making sure she wasn't going to strain anything.

"Soon," Nina admitted, shifting again. She wanted to at least make it a block before pausing, or else they would be doing this all day. Her arms weren't really aching and the crossing was just up ahead. "Maybe just for a minute up here at the lights."

"We can do that," Perseus nodded, "you're going to have to tell me where the lights are though!" Considering he was walking backwards, she was going to have to help him cross the street.

Nina grinned brightly. "It'll be like a surprise!" she told him, pushing onward and then, after about thirty seconds, saying: "okay, let's stop, just for a minute." She put the sofa down carefully and stretched her arms across her chest, one after the other.

She frowned. "That's only one block," she said, "but I think I can make it."

Then, taking a deep breath, Nina picked up the banana-coloured prize again and started walking. They continued down the busy street, and she fielded a couple of 'cool sofa!'s on the way.

They stopped once every block - although once Nina made it two blocks without having to pause - and eventually arrived at the building where her father lived, and where her apartment was.

"This is me," Nina said, putting the couch down once more, glad there was now only a little further to go. She put her hands on her hips, panting a little, and wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her arm. "Oh man, I've really earned this thing."

Nina had been thinking, as they walked, about how this would go down if her father was home. She really didn't want to introduce Peter to Tezcatlipoca. It would probably be okay but meeting the girlfriend's dad was a whole different deal when the girlfriend's dad was the god of (among other things) enmity, discord, and strife.

She smiled at Peter, who didn't look like he was even warm after all that. She supposed once you carried people out of burning buildings, a sofa could almost be tossed over your shoulder.

"Looks nice!" he said with a grin. "Now is where you tell me we have to go up 67 flights of stairs, right?" he joked.

"A hundred and sixty-seven," Nina clarified, walking over to the big steel double doors. It was clear from the outside that it was an industrial building- it had once been a factory long ago - and when she pulled those doors opened it revealed plenty of open space and cement floors. There were various pieces of gym equipment and practice weaponry strewn about, although at a quick glance Nina was glad to see none of the warriors were actually practising at the moment.

She turned to look at Peter from the door. "Actually, it's just the second floor and there's a service elevator."

Perseus looked over the gym equipment, interested. "This place looks incredible," he said, impressed. "I didn't know you lived over a gym. Glad to hear there's a service elevator!"

"Yeah, my dad owns in," Nina said, as they walked the sofa through and across to the other side.

"Hey!" came a voice from across the room and Nina made a face but managed not to swear as she turned to see one of Tezcatlipoca's warriors appearing from one of the rooms. It was Angel, shirtless and with his brightly coloured eagle-eating-snake tattoo on display across his chest. He looked much sweatier than Nina did. He pointed, accusing, at Peter. "Who's this? Who're you?"

He'd come in with such force and even Nina- who was used to how short they all were, how suspicious, how constantly ready for a fight- wanted to take a step back.

"Angel, it's fine!" she told him, but Angel wasn't looking at her. "This is Peter. He's my boyfriend."
