When: Friday night
Where: Kemp house
Warnings: Drugs, TBD

Jamie knew, better than most people, how hard it was to deal with a mother that had just suddenly reentered your life. Jayden was going to have to deal with it in his own way, and Jamie was here for him while he did it.

So he'd suggested a movie night, and he was the first one into the living room to set things up. Of course, the remote was choosing now to be elusive. He was digging through the couch cushions looking for it, when his fingers brushed across something plastic. That confused him, and he tugged on whatever it was to dislodge it.

The sight of little white pills in a plastic bag made his stomach plummet. "Lena!" he called. "Lena, I need you. Now!"

The afternoon had been so nice, and now his wife was yelling and Jamie was clearly pissed off. Thomas was about to ask what the hell they were talking about when he noticed the bag in Jamie's hands.

He felt his heart skip a beat.

Oh God.

"I- I didn't!" Thomas protested, though he was clearly panicking and sure that made him seem less truthful. "I didn't do anything!"

Lena rubbed her eyes before throwing up her hands in defeat. "It's Christmas, Thomas. And you have to go back to rehab."

"What! No! Oh god, please don't- No."

"Dad, you promised things were going to be different," Jamie sighed. "But this is not giving me a lot of confidence that that's happening so far. What else are we supposed to do?"

The idea of going to rehab again was horrifying enough on it's own, but it was Christmas, and Thomas was secretly terrified it would be his father's last. He wanted to be with him.

"Please," Thomas said, trying to calm his frantic heartbeat a little, "those aren't mine. I know- I understand why you think they are, but they're not."

"Thomas, please," Lena sighed. "Don't lie to me. I cannot handle you lying to me."

Thomas chewed on his lip then and he shuffled a little. "See, now I don't know what to say, because if I claim them as mine, I'll be lying, but if I keep saying they aren't, you'll think I'm lying and be upset. Things are better! Look, I'll admit I want to take that bag off you and chase three of them with some vodka or something, but I won't. I remember how upset it made you and I have myself convinced if I ever did it again you'll both move out. Which...by the way you shouldn't tell me if that's not true, because it keeps me from doing it. If you honestly think I would risk that I have no idea what to say."

His father's admission made Jamie falter a bit, because his dad was easier to read when he was talking about his family. "Well at least we know there's something that works," he finally said. "But if they're not yours, and they're not mine or Lena's, then I'm at a loss to explain how they got here."

Oh thank god, Jamie might believe him. Thomas sighed in relief and he stepped closer to them. "I- I don't know. Maybe they fell out of Dani's pocket? But I doubt she would have brought them here. She knows I still struggle with all of this."

Lena wasn't as quick to believe Thomas, which was pretty clear by the look on her face. "Thomas-" she said quietly. "I don't- I don't know what to think, but if you just used us as a way to guilt us into believing you-"

Thomas' jaw dropped. "I- Lena, I wouldn't do that! Look, maybe they are mine, but if they are, they're from over a year ago and they've just been chilling in the sofa since then! But I don't think I ever kept them in a bag!"

Jayden heard the raised voices and despite every muscle in his body telling him to run, he managed to make himself enter the living room to see if Jamie was okay, only to find his friend holding his drugs. "Uhm-" he said softly, staring at all of them. "Whats'-"

"It's okay, Jayden," Thomas assured the boy immediately. "It's okay, Lena and Jamie found some pills and thought they were mine, but they're not. We're not fighting." He knew Jayden wouldn't like fighting. "We'll watch the movie soon, okay?" Jayden just nodded. "Lena, I'm sorry I ever gave you a reason to doubt me. I really am. But this- I am not on any drugs and haven't been since last year. Really."

Lena still looked skeptical, but all that changed when Jayden quietly said, "they're mine. The pills."

"Dani doesn't strike me as the type to do that," Jamie agreed. And yeah, maybe he was looking for something to latch onto to believe his father, but that didn't mean he was wrong.

He was about to try and interject something into the conversation when Jayden appeared. "Hey Jayden, it's OK," he added. "We're just going to-"

He stopped short when Jayden said they were his pills. "Wait. What?" he asked, falteringly.

Suddenly they were all looking at him, and Jayden wasn't entirely sure he remembered how to breathe. "I- I just wanted-"

Lena crossed her arms, trying not to look upset at that. "Jayden, are you covering for Thomas?"

"No!" Jayden said, too loudly. "No, I- I was upset and I didn't know what to do so I asked this guy for them."

Thomas raised one hand, indicating he wanted silence and Jayden felt his blood run cold. All at once, Thomas looked angry but his voice was calm and collected and Jayden found that scarier than if he had yelled. "You brought these pills into my house even though you knew I'm an addict?" he asked, his voice never wavering.

"I-"

"Jayden," Lena sounded disappointed too, and Jayden was pretty sure he was going to vomit. "What if Thomas had found these!? What if his finding them had meant he relapsed."

Oh god. "I didn't- I didn't think of that," Jayden whimpered.

Thomas, who couldn't stand to ever seen someone upset, took a step forward with the intention of reassuring Jayden it was okay. Jayden, unfortunately, took it as threatening and he turned on his heel, racing to the bathroom where he slammed the door and locked it behind him.

"Shit-" Thomas hissed to himself.

Jamie was slightly startled at his father's countenance, and it wasn't even aimed at him. He understood Jayden wanting to escape reality, but he'd gone and done the very worst possible thing he could have done.

And then Jayden was gone, and Jamie sighed heavily. "Yeah, for the future, advancing toward him like that never ends well," he told his dad. "Let me see if I can go talk to him."

He went and knocked on the bathroom door, calling softly through the door. "Jayden? It's Jamie."

"Oh dear," Thomas lamented, as Jamie moved to the bathroom door. Beyond the door there was silence, and Thomas sidled up beside his son. "It's okay Jayden, I'm not mad!"

More silence.

Thomas leaned closer to the door and then he sighed. "I can hear traffic. I think the window's open in there."

"What, you think he crawled out the window?" Jamie asked in disbelief. He managed to pop the lock after fiddling with the handle for a few minutes (the joy of old houses), and opened the door to...an empty bathroom.

"Son of a bich," he muttered. "He went out the fucking window."

Thomas stared at the empty bathroom for a moment and then he sighed. "Should we try to call him?" He turned around to head for his phone and yelped in surprise when he found Lena literally an inch away from him. "Uh. Pretend I sounded more brave there."

"I always do," Lena joked, but then she frowned. "Fuck, I'm sorry, Thomas. I really thought you'd-"

"No," Thomas waved his hands around and then he moved to kiss her forehead. "No, don't apologise. It's okay. I'm just worried about Jayden. Jamie, will you flush those please, so I can stop looking at them?"

"If he sees it's us, he likely won't pick up," Jamie called, flushing the pills down the toilet. "But yeah, Dad, I'm sorry too. I just jumped to a conclusion without considering anything else."

"Yeah...you're probably right," Thomas said, giving up the quest for his phone. "Jamie, it's okay." Like hell he was going to hold something like this against them after they'd forgiven him for lying and hiding his drug addiction for over a year. He stepped over to Jamie and dropped a kiss on the top of his head. "Please don't feel guilty. I understand. Besides, it keeps me honest. I never want to be the reason you're that upset again." The look on Jamie's face had broken Thomas' heart and while he was worried about Jayden, he was glad that he hadn't been the reason Jamie had looked like that. "I love you."
