Who: Piper Addison, cameos by Nikkie & Vlad Tepes (Open to Veronica, Lena, Charles, Cassandra, and Jacob Grimm)
What: Bloody vampires
When: Thursday night/really early Friday morning
Where: Bar, NY streets, an alley, hospital
Warnings: Vlad, TBD

Normally, Piper didn't go out during the week. It was a leftover habit from her school schedule, and even if she didn't have school, she likely worked the next day. But school was over until the end of August, and she only had one life, so it wasn't terribly hard for Nikkie to convince her to come out when she called.

She'd gotten dressed and left a note for Charles, locking up behind her and getting a taxi to the bar Nikki had suggested. The two of them managed to wile away a good four hours over drinks and dinner, talking and laughing and just enjoying each other's company. The night only ended when Piper looked at her phone and realized that it was coming up on 2 a.m., and both of them had to work the next day.

They hugged goodbye in front of the bar, turning in opposite directions for their respective homes. There were still a fair number of taxis out and about, but none of them stopped, no matter how hard she waved her arms. After the fourth one sped by without appearing to notice her at all, she cursed and stomped her foot. There was a subway stop a few blocks away, she was pretty sure. She hadn't had that much to drink, she could make it. She double-checked the information on her phone, then started off in the right direction.

She was only about two blocks away, when she caught one of her heels on a crack in the sidewalk. She managed not to fall, but her ankle hurt like a bitch. Leaning against a nearby wall, she gingerly slipped off her shoe, shining her phone's flashlight on her foot. Nothing looked broken or bleeding, and if she had to hobble, well then, so be it. She put her phone away and her shoe back on, ready to head back onto the street and head home.

She never got the chance. A hand clamped itself around her arm, and another went over her mouth. She struggled and tried to claw at her attacker's arms, but it didn't seem to do any good at all. She let out a muffled scream when she felt teeth sink into her neck, fear making her heart beat faster as blood trickled down her neck. As he drank more, her struggles got weaker and her vision got cloudy. Eventually, he let her go, letting her fall to the floor of the alley in a heap.

It was a garbage collector who found her, lying on the floor of the alley. He couldn't tell her apart from the black plastic bags at first, but as night gave way to the gray light of dawn, he could see her more clearly.

"Jesus Christ," he breathed, pulling out his phone and calling 911. He knelt down beside her, feeling for a pulse, and his own heart almost stopped when he found one. Weak and thready, true, but still there. He stayed with her until the ambulance came, holding her hand as she drifted in and out of consciousness.

The last thing she remembered was the bright white interior of the ambulance, and a light shining in her eyes. Then nothing. Nothing at all until she woke up in the hospital, almost a full day later. Her memory was fuzzy and she'd lost a lot of blood, and the doctors said she was lucky to be alive.

"Is there anyone we can call?" her doctor asked.

"You better call Nikkie and V," she said. "And Charles. And Lena. They're all in my phone. Which is...wherever my bag is." She gestured at the counter across the room. "In the zip pocket inside."

The doctor made the calls, and Piper drifted off again. They'd come eventually, one at a time, or all of them at once, but in the meantime, she was going to get some sleep.

"It-" Charles didn't know what to say about that, but he leaned down to plant a kiss on Piper's forehead. "You're safe now. Did they have to do a transfusion?"

"Yeah," she replied. "Yeah, I think I needed close to two units of blood. I'm pretty sure that's what my nurse said, anyway. They want to keep me for a couple days and monitor my...everything, basically."

He pulled over a chair so he could settle down beside her and take her hand. "I'm so sorry," he lamented. "I don't understand why a person would do something like that."

She squeezed his hand. "It's not your fault," she told him. "This city is full of strange and terrible things, both human and not. It looks like one of the more terrible ones found me."

Charles just wanted to hug her and protect her from all the terrible things, but he couldn't. He felt like he had already failed her. "I would keep them all at bay if I could," he said sadly.

Behind them, a pink-haired woman appeared in the door, a frown on her face. "Piper," Lena gasped. "Jesus. If my friends could stop ending up here, I'd be okay with that."

Piper managed to scrape up a smile for him. "I know you would," she replied. "But sometimes bad things just happen, and I was really in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"Hey, Lena," she said, looking over at her friend. "I am totally down for not being here, if it makes you feel any better."

"I really bet you are," Lena said quietly. "Hey, Charles."

Charles smiled lightly at Lena, but he never dropped Piper's hand and he started caressing it with his thumb.

"So what happened? Did someone jump you from behind?" she asked, worriedly.

"I turned my ankle walking home, someone grabbed me from behind while I was looking at it," Piper replied. "And they started biting at my neck, it was creepy and terrifying. A garbageman found me bleeding on the floor of an alley."

"Sounds like what happened to Kat," Lena said sadly. "That's so creepy! Do you really think vampires are around?!" Of course she looked at Charles to be the expert, and he felt a little uncomfortable.

"Well...it's possible," he said warily. "Which is not a nice thought."

Piper propped herself up onto her elbows. "Wait, this happened to someone else?" she asked, eyes widening slightly. "That's...that's fucked up. Bloody vampires running around the city, do I have to start wearing garlic around my neck?"

"Yeah, Kat had a bite on her neck too and she needed a bunch of transfusions. She was in the hospital for several days and it was total shit. Can I get either of you anything?"

"Nothing for me," Charles nodded. "I don't know what we could even do about vampires."

"Ugh, lovely," Piper said, flopping back down onto her pillow. "But she's doing OK now?"

"I would love food that isn't liquid, but they said not for a day or two," she went on. "Thank you, though. And I don't either, the idea of vampires is just...fucking creepy."

"Yeah, Kat's fine now. She went to Greece with her boyfriend so I reckon she's awesome. I'm sorry I get you anything to eat. Maybe soup? Or is it all through an IV?"

Piper smiled. "Sounds like fun," she said. "I've seen pictures of Greece, it looks beautiful."

"It's all IV right now," she continued. "They said I can try clear liquids tomorrow, though, so that's good. They want me to be more stable before I eat solids again, or...something. I think I fell asleep during their reasoning."

"Never been there myself, but that's what I hear," Lena said.

"Augh, sucks." She sat down beside Charles and leaned on her knees. "I wish we could do more."

"So do I," Charles spoke up. "You know I'm going to act like a mother hen when you come home, correct?"

Piper smiled. "I know," she replied. "They're probably going to tell me to take it easy even after they let me go home, so you're probably going to have to keep me from getting too lazy, too."

She reached over and squeezed Lena's hand. "You're doing a lot, just by being here," she told her. "Keeps me from going spare, since I can't leave this room."

"I can do whatever you'd like me to do," Charles promised Piper. "Absolutely anything."

"He's pretty good, isn't he?" Lena said, pointing to Charles and laughing.

"I promise not to turn into the demanding patient from hell," she said. "Although I will probably drink all the tea. Which isn't too far off from usual, really."

For the first time since waking up, Piper's smile was wide and real. "The best," she agreed, squeezing Charles' hand.

"As if I would ever mind," Charles said honestly. When Piper squeezed his hand, he smiled warmly at her.

"How do you feel at the moment though?" Lena asked Piper worriedly. "Do you need a nap?"

"You say that now," she teased.

"I'm fine," she assured Lena. "I've been sleeping most of the day, and I'm really glad you guys are here."

"Oh I'm not going anywhere!" Lena informed Piper. "Even if you did sleep, Charles and I could play guard dog. I don't know how good he'd be in a fight, but I know shit."

Charles laughed. "I could pull my gloves off and hit people dramatically with them."

That image made her smile. "I'd feel safe sleeping, knowing you two were standing guard," she said. "And I would turn into the worst patient if they tried to throw you out."

"Then we'll stay as long as they'll let us," Charles promised.

"Hell yeah we will. Or one of us could go get you some books or something if they would help." Lena just wanted to make everything better.

"I'll get it if you're okay with me rifling though your things," Lena laughed. "And if you'll let me in your house," she said to Charles.

"Of course, I see no problem with that."

Piper waved one hand. "I'm pretty sure that nothing I own will shock you," she said, laughing. "So yeah, rifle away."
