Who: Briareos and Kymopoleia
When: Valentine's Day
What: Love arrows come calling.
Where: Ky's apartment

He had experienced this massive emplosion in his insides before when Eros had shot his arrows. It was uncomfortable, foreign to him. Briareos had never considered something such as desire and lust, or that exaggerated need for someone other than himself. He was built as an anomoly, someone who was never meant to have such things. He was a monster still under that human flap, and he had been nothing more than a bargaining chip between Titans and Olympians for years.

Even when Poseidon had sold off his daughter, she was something beautiful, but he had never resonated a feeling beyond what was given to him. Since the months that she had let him live after Poseidon had damned him to death, he respected her for giving him that sort of chance when she could have killed him just as easily.

He had left well enough alone of her, somewhat concerned in a strange way of what Poseidon would do to her after. The waters settled and he went back to his usual routine before Poseidon had disrupted it. He had no desire to see Kymopoleia until that morning, where he stood outside her apartment stalking by a tree that was wider than himself, looking up to decide if he dared step inside.

That much was true. He's intimidated her, but he hadn't laid a hand on her. For Briareos that wasn't exactly nothing.

But what would happen tomorrow when this wore off and he could do whatever he liked? What would happen when he decided he was angry with Aphrodite and Eros playing their games and decided to lash out at the object of that infatuation?

Kymopoleia looked at him seriously, thinking about it, and then said, "Swear upon Styx that you mean me no harm." It was a major question to ask, but she needed to know if he would do it. Maybe now, under this thrall, was the best time to ask it. "Swear it and mean it, and it will still hold true when you stop loving me."

It was a big step in whatever this relationship was to either of them. He didn't see her as a possession. She was a person now. She had been given to him once, but times changed that. He could respect her that much.

Briareos dropped his hands down from his head, letting them limply lay on his knees. "I swear on Styx I mean you no harm," he repeated.

It was an interesting change, Kymopoleia had to admit. She remembered last year when they had started that bar fight together, how they'd felt like they were on the same team. It had felt better than being against each other. She didn't really trust Briareos but he had just given her a reason to do so - even a monster wouldn't be stupid enough to break a binding oath. Even a monster wouldn't want to face the torment of the furies. She trusted now not in any sense of kindness, but in his sense of self-preservation.

The humans had a saying: better the devil you know. And if it came down to it, she'd rather rely on his strength than see it used against her.

She considered him, the words of the oath sinking into silence, and then she said, "you want a beer?"

Briareos squinted his eyes expecting a hit or that knife to his throat. When neither came he carefully opened back up, one eye at a time. Her red hair seemed to shimmer in that light, but he didn't speak about it. He wasn't going to completely be overcome with emotion that he started to spout sonnets. This all felt bizarre enough.

"I would," he replied keeping his hands to himself in between his knees. It was his silent way of showing her he stood behind his oath.

Ky went to the fridge and pulled out two of the few beer bottles left, walking back over and holding out one to him and then sitting on the couch across from him, watching him with interest and wariness as she opened her own beer.

It was strange, like his eyes had been opened for the first time. Everything was beautiful in the most fulfilling way. He was content with just being in her presence for now. He took the bottle she offered with a curt nod. Saying thank you over and over again seemed redundant.

He drank very little, his thin fingers picking across the label, running against the fluted neck. He turned his gaze from her down to the floor. "Have you heard from him? Your father?" He hoped in some way in fact that the sea king had moved on from his torment of them both. It seemed maybe with Theseus in town that maybe he'd found a new focus.

"Not a word," Kymopoleia said, pulling her legs up onto the chair so that she could cross them. With his oath made she already felt more secure. Physically, at least, she could let her guard down around him. (Who knew what it would be like tomorrow when this love spell wore off though?) "And that's the way I'm hoping it'll stay. I'm done with his bullshit and it seems he can't be bothered murdering me for trying to murder him."

She shrugged, but she was glad he hadn't come after her. She'd been scared but ready for it those first months afterwards, but now that fear was gone.

"I think he has a new victim." She and Briareos both had started to doubt that he was coming for either of them any time soon. Though, Poseidon had a habit of sitting on grudges. "That's a good thing."
