Who: Briareos and Kymopoleia
When: Valentine's Day
What: Love arrows come calling.
Where: Ky's apartment

He had experienced this massive emplosion in his insides before when Eros had shot his arrows. It was uncomfortable, foreign to him. Briareos had never considered something such as desire and lust, or that exaggerated need for someone other than himself. He was built as an anomoly, someone who was never meant to have such things. He was a monster still under that human flap, and he had been nothing more than a bargaining chip between Titans and Olympians for years.

Even when Poseidon had sold off his daughter, she was something beautiful, but he had never resonated a feeling beyond what was given to him. Since the months that she had let him live after Poseidon had damned him to death, he respected her for giving him that sort of chance when she could have killed him just as easily.

He had left well enough alone of her, somewhat concerned in a strange way of what Poseidon would do to her after. The waters settled and he went back to his usual routine before Poseidon had disrupted it. He had no desire to see Kymopoleia until that morning, where he stood outside her apartment stalking by a tree that was wider than himself, looking up to decide if he dared step inside.

In her apartment, Kymopoleia was sitting in front of the TV and eating yesterday's Chinese takeout. That it was Valentine's Day didn't mean anything to her. It was a Christian day turned into a romantic day and Kymopoleia didn't do either of those things. Even the ads on the television were talking about roses and plush teddies and candlelit dinners, and Ky rolled her eyes at humanity and their obsessions.

Sometimes felt odd though, something external, and she realised after a little time that it was Briareos she felt somewhere near by. She decided to ignore it.

The two saw each other at bars some nights, they could even be in the same room as each other without Kymopoleia wanting to grab for a gun or a knife, but he wouldn't come to her home, she was sure. He'd made it clear that he was allowing her to set that boundary.

But maybe he'd changed his mind. Going to the kitchen she got a knife and slipped it down the back of her jeans, hiding it under her top. She drew her red hair up into a messy bun - nothing for him to grab onto - and then walked out of her apartment and to the front door of the building.

On the stoop she looked over at him and said, "what are you doing here?"

His aura wasn't as hidden anymore. She could sense him easily, which right now felt like an attack. Briareos stepped forward, bristled like a cat. She was on the defensive no matter how calm her voice.

At first he said nothing because there was a pound in his chest. His heart was moving at the pace of a jackhammer, but his instinct to flee had been slowly disappearing.

Even if Poseidon had come at him he would break his arms first in a fight before he ran. At most he would die and not coke back. Briareos felt stronger yes, but his life had always been just a black hole.

"I took a walk." She was carved in his mind since he'd woken up. "You can put the knife down." He didn't see it, but it was the easiest thing she could slip out to slice him with without a lot of noise.

"Can I?" Kymopoleia asked him, an eyebrow raised. She wasn't so sure about that herself. "You took a walk," she repeated. "Why did you take a walk here?"

He buddled his coat tighter around him, giving him very little padding. "I couldn't sleep." His mind was a muddle of his own thoughts and new that he didn't understand. It was as if he were about to drop from a heart attack at any second.

He stepped forward again persistently in his unnatural way, until he stood just a few feet from her. "Put the knife down. I'm not here to harm." Frankly he wasn't sure why he was here, but he had no intention of leaving.

It took everything inside of Kymopoleia not to back up when he moved closer, so although she took no step it was clear she leaned away from the approaching sea monster.

"Then tell me why you are here." There was a panicked edge to her voice now, this intrusion on the space she thought was safely her own. Briareos couldn't be trusted.

He tried to smile to show he had no ill intentions but it came out just creepy. He had all the look of a serial killer. He looked around the street careful to see if there was anyone else around to witness. "I'm not sure. I feel funny."

He may be a monster, but the look in his eyes told a lonlier story.

He felt funny? How was that even an answer? Kymopleia was quickly losing her calm. "Then... don't eat dumpster food or whatever, you don't come visit me!"

She did take a step back then, because she felt like maybe she could mask the fear as annoyance.

He wasn't going to chase her around, but he would come inside. It felt like an impulse that had to be acted upon. He must have looked taller to her now, because his figure didn't cower at her loose threats.

He stepped forward until he was on the stoop with her. He could slip right inside and she would let him because he dominated this situation again. She hadn't seen him with that confidence since Poseidon first dragged him here. Even then she had come at him swinging and he pushed back. Today, he didn't wish to attack if she came at him.

Kymopoleia shrank from him and shook her head quickly, her heart trying to tear its way out of her in fright. "We had an understanding," she whispered, her voice a hopeless tremor.

She'd been so foolish to think that anything had changed, that he could be a creature trustworthy, a thing not here to break everything she was over and over.

He could see her shake, he could sense the fear. She was brought back to that young girl that feared him. He reached out to touch her face but at her words he stopped, curling his hand and laying it limply at his side. Poseidon might wish to destroy his own, Briareos did not.

"Won't touch you." His voice came out calm, it wasn't sinister or dark. "Our understanding still stands." He walked inside hoping she took this as a sign of peace. He just needed to see her. She was the only thing familiar to him anymore.

She'd flinched and braced herself when he lifted that hand, frozen and unmoving. But then he stopped and Kymopoleia found herself surprised and relieved. And she was even more surprised to find she believed what he said.

He moved past her and Kymopoleia let out the breath she'd been holding and her body slumped where she stood.

She watched him walk inside and squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, taking a deep breath and walking inside the building with him. Hers was the second door in the corridor and she opened it now, walking inside, her arms wrapped around herself. Standing in her little living room she watched him, hating that he was here, in her safe space. No one came in here. It was only hers, the only bastion against the outside world, against her father.

He was an invasion to her space, but those centuries ago she had been one to his. He'd had no idea what to do with a young girl. He had once thought Poseidon had given her to him, but he never stopped to think that she had been a pawn in Poseidon's madness. It gave the Olympian power over him with that piece. He didn't realize any of that until Poseidon turned his rage on him, when Briareos could hardly defend himself.

He stepped inside seeing a side of her he'd never opened himself to see. Briareos never opened himself up. He'd had family once, but he never had a bond with anyone. His own mother could never love the faces he and his brothers wore.

His eyes filtered around her apartment. "We're not so different you and I." True to his word he kept his hands away. He did move to take off his coat because it sheltered that pound in his heart that was about to break through his rib cage.

He stood still with his feet planted to the floor, tossing his coat on her couch. He did not turn to face her, just continued showing interest in her space. "Just pawns in a bigger gods madness." She was sold off, he was sheltered from the world in the most inhumane ways.

"If you think you were a pawn," Kymopoleia said, "then I was even less than that."

She had her arms crossed, both afraid and antagonistic, the feeling of the blade against her back the only real thing she could focus on. "You used me and tortured me. You're the thing that caused of my pain."

Briareos rubbed that pound in his chest, it was painful now. Unbearable. "What would I have known to do with a young girl? I spent my life in darkness in torture. I knew nothing different." But it had made an impact. She had hated him more than her father. He was still a threat to her. She either saw him as a monster or as a weak being she could dominate for the harm he'd given.

"Wouldn't have if I'd known another way." That was his apology, which was deeper than the flimsy words of 'I'm sorry.'

Urges were not things she wanted to hear about from Briareos. Urges were things that ended up with her getting hurt. She moved back away from him a little again, trying to look casual as the put a table between the two of them.

"I don't know what to tell you then," she said.

"It's painful here." He spoke quietly to himself, but it was loud enough to be heard. He felt pain all the time from phantom limbs. Sometimes his hands went numb.

He didn't flinch as she brought out that knife. It did startle him but any sudden movement would be too quick. His head would be rolling on the floor. He sat upright, not getting violent which was usually his first defense. "I just needed to see you. To be sure you were alright." It sounded so foreign being this concerned because his heart felt like it would burst at any moment. "I needed to be near you..." He meant it in the most honest way possible. Not in some dominant way to lord over her. He just needed her in a way he'd never felt before. He felt like he could laugh, cry, or be and agonizing pain all at once. It was so new.

Needed to see her? Make sure she was alright? Be near her?

Kymopoleia was so confused. She found herself lowering the knife, watching him with a completely perplexed look on her face, moving her mouth as though she was going to ask something. But eventually all she said was, "what?"

He sounded so... bare.

"Are you..." but she didn't know what she'd been going to end that thought with and again said, "what?"

He shook his head, hands raggedly running through his hair. This was a mistake wasn't it? He was making a fool of himself. He was just as confused. "I don't know, I don't understand any of this. I've upset you," he shook his head again. That was worse than anything his heart felt. Injuring her in some way.

"Well, yeah," Kymopoleia said, because when had he ever not upset her? "But... you care that you've upset me?"

She put the knife down on the table beside her, watching him warily. But the wariness had edged more into confusion now. He'd never shown any idea of caring what she thought before or if he was hurting her, but now... what was this.

It was a weird mix of emotions and thoughts. His own and not. "I do..." He said slowly. Two words that were foreign for him in their context. She wasn't angry wither, he had no idea how to approach this. He was as confused as her, and she had no way of explaining it to him either.

"If it were I wouldn't still be here without a fight." He took a deep breath. It was odd feeling so disconnected, but more complete just being in her presence. He sat up straight knowing that the answer to this mystery was still floating around somewhere. "I do care and not just because of whatever this is. You saved my life wether you wanted to or not. I'm grateful for that." It might not be the end of his story with Poseidon but he wanted to make some peace with her.

Something was beginning to dawn on Kymopoleia as he kept speaking and she tried to think of the date. It had been the 11th a few days ago... was it the 14th today? Was it Valentine's Day? Kymopoleia had never been struck by Eros arrows but she'd heard all about it. He pulled this prank every year, and it seemed pretty certain to her now that this year was no different.

Watching him she sat down heavily on the chair nearest to her. "You're in love," she said to him, unsurprised now that she didn't recognise the look on Briareos. "That's what you're feeling."

"What? No..." He shook his head not understanding what she described. Love? He'd never known such an emotion, but it swelled inside like a heated dough. "Eros did it," Kymopoleia said, observing this creature in front of her, this foreign and completely unknown animal.

She was offended. He was on a strange place, not comfortable in his own skin, but that had been his natural state for centuries. Briareos was never going to be what he was. If he couldn't be the same, why must he be treated the same? They'd beat this dead horse over and over again.

He shut his eyes tightly as she spoke, her words like venom. "Never given the chance." Perhaps if he'd not been shunned before birth by his Titan parents he'd have known more of life, of people, of how real marriages and relationships between others really worked. Never was he a man, always the monster. It was still what she saw.

"I'm not here to hurt," he meant beyond Eros' arrows. He hadn't intended to the first day he'd seen her, but Braireos would not keep his defenses down. He was weaker than her, that was a difficult thing for him to realize. "Haven't put you in a corner since you dug me out of a hole." He reminded her. That was long before he'd been hit with love juice. He respected her. That was a defeat all in its own.

That much was true. He's intimidated her, but he hadn't laid a hand on her. For Briareos that wasn't exactly nothing.

But what would happen tomorrow when this wore off and he could do whatever he liked? What would happen when he decided he was angry with Aphrodite and Eros playing their games and decided to lash out at the object of that infatuation?

Kymopoleia looked at him seriously, thinking about it, and then said, "Swear upon Styx that you mean me no harm." It was a major question to ask, but she needed to know if he would do it. Maybe now, under this thrall, was the best time to ask it. "Swear it and mean it, and it will still hold true when you stop loving me."

It was a big step in whatever this relationship was to either of them. He didn't see her as a possession. She was a person now. She had been given to him once, but times changed that. He could respect her that much.

Briareos dropped his hands down from his head, letting them limply lay on his knees. "I swear on Styx I mean you no harm," he repeated.

It was an interesting change, Kymopoleia had to admit. She remembered last year when they had started that bar fight together, how they'd felt like they were on the same team. It had felt better than being against each other. She didn't really trust Briareos but he had just given her a reason to do so - even a monster wouldn't be stupid enough to break a binding oath. Even a monster wouldn't want to face the torment of the furies. She trusted now not in any sense of kindness, but in his sense of self-preservation.

The humans had a saying: better the devil you know. And if it came down to it, she'd rather rely on his strength than see it used against her.

She considered him, the words of the oath sinking into silence, and then she said, "you want a beer?"

Briareos squinted his eyes expecting a hit or that knife to his throat. When neither came he carefully opened back up, one eye at a time. Her red hair seemed to shimmer in that light, but he didn't speak about it. He wasn't going to completely be overcome with emotion that he started to spout sonnets. This all felt bizarre enough.

"I would," he replied keeping his hands to himself in between his knees. It was his silent way of showing her he stood behind his oath.

It was strange, like his eyes had been opened for the first time. Everything was beautiful in the most fulfilling way. He was content with just being in her presence for now. He took the bottle she offered with a curt nod. Saying thank you over and over again seemed redundant.

He drank very little, his thin fingers picking across the label, running against the fluted neck. He turned his gaze from her down to the floor. "Have you heard from him? Your father?" He hoped in some way in fact that the sea king had moved on from his torment of them both. It seemed maybe with Theseus in town that maybe he'd found a new focus.

"Not a word," Kymopoleia said, pulling her legs up onto the chair so that she could cross them. With his oath made she already felt more secure. Physically, at least, she could let her guard down around him. (Who knew what it would be like tomorrow when this love spell wore off though?) "And that's the way I'm hoping it'll stay. I'm done with his bullshit and it seems he can't be bothered murdering me for trying to murder him."

She shrugged, but she was glad he hadn't come after her. She'd been scared but ready for it those first months afterwards, but now that fear was gone.
