WHO: Ariadne and Tuck (and others?)
WHEN: Friday 25th
WHERE: Erato's apartment
WHAT: The Semi-Intoxicated Erato Investigation Squad
WARNINGS: Breaking and entering

Gotta sober up Ariadne thought, slapping herself three times on the cheek and trying to force herself to think clearly; Asterion needed her to think clearly.

She'd woken in bed with a woman named Aisling – in her forties, smoking hot – and one of the naiads, and they'd had a liquid brunch while the naiad (who was only answering to Clover, these days) did their hair. Aisling had been staying at the house since St Patrick's Day, which incidentally had been the last time Ariadne had seen Dionysus. The last time Aisling had seen him, too, apart from the pictures he'd sent Ariadne later: partying with the dancing girls, wearing Aisling's uniform after marching the entire parade with them. Aisling was stubbornly parked at their house, purportedly till she got her uniform back, but Ariadne had seen enough people get a taste of Dionysus and need more to know that Aisling was looking for something in her life beside a uniform (which Ariadne knew she was never, ever getting back; but Dionysus would get her something better.) Half way through their second bottle of brunch-wine Cait had shown up with cream donuts which they'd descended on, voraciously; Cait was the woman in her sixties that Dionysus, back in January, had mistaken for his maid after breaking into her house. Both nipples and her navel pierced, now, she'd become a familiar sight around here.

Ariadne appreciated the donuts, soaking up the wine. A bit, anyway. They weren't sobering her up more than the thought that Asterion was hurting, though. She couldn't stand the idea he thought everyone hated him, though she could see perfectly why he'd jumped straight to that conclusion before considering any others. He'd lived a certain way for so long that those thought patterns were so deeply engrained, of course he couldn't see the way through on his own.

Ariadne adored what he had going with Erato, though. She made her brother smile and he so deserved to smile. And Ariadne didn't think that Erato would hurt Asterion on purpose but perhaps she might be being a little careless with his feelings? Perhaps some new love had swept her off her feet and she'd forgotten about her sweet monster? If that was the case, well, then she and Ariadne were going to have a talk and figure out some kind of damage control, minimise Asterion's oncoming hurt.

She was absolutely certain Erato didn't just have a cold and was embarrassed about a snotty nose. The Muses were so rarely ever sick, especially not while living in the same city as Apollo, but the suggestion had been something to say to keep Asterion from believing that anything was his fault.

But when Erato didn't respond to the knocks on her door, and when Ariadne dropped to her stomach to scan under the door for movement and saw none, Ariadne considered the other possibilities. From the other side of the door she could hear the sound of Erato's cats, and you didn't need to be married to a patron of cats to recognise their cries as lonely ones.

Erato was a muse, after all; they rarely got colds, sure, but on the other hand, they got kidnapped a lot. It was a raw deal those goddesses wound up with.

Still, she needed to get into that apartment and find out more before jumping wildly to any conclusions. Ariadne climbed to her feet and searched around the door with her fingertips, incase Erato was trusting enough to hide a key along the top of the frame. No luck there, so Ariadne tried knocking at Erato's neighbors door instead; Erato was friendly, the kind of friendly that would get to know her neighbors even in New York, but said neighbors, on both sides, weren't home.

Plan C then. C for crime. Ariadne lay herself back down on the floor in front of Erato's door, poking the ends of her hair through underneath it so the cats could play with it, and dialed her favourite outlaw lover.

"Ariadne-" Tuck said, stepping over to Erato's vanity. And maybe to Ariadne's eyes it did look immaculate, but to Tuck's eyes - the eyes of a trained thief - it looked picked over and put back together again. "Someone's been here and it's not Erato. This is-" Tuck waved his hands around, indicating the vanity, "it's not right. There's- There's something about it that's not right. Things are missing." He turned back to Ariadne and frowned. "I'll take the happy puppy there, I think checking in is a very good idea."

He reached out for Evie who immediately reached out for him too, grinning. "Wanna see the kitties, Evie?"

Ariadne passed Evie over and pulled out her phone, drawing a complex maze on the screen to unlock it as she sat down on the end of the bed, casting her eyes around to try and see what he'd seen. She didn't doubt his reading of 'not right' for a second; he was a good looking man, after all, he'd probably been in Erato's bedroom before.

"What's missing, besides Erato?" Perhaps there were clues there, she wondered, beginning to type out a message as she spoke, already trying to decide how she was going to tell Asterion, other than 'carefully'. She hadn't seen him in a high stress situation in a long time and it was shaping up that this might become one. Shit, it would be a relief if Erato was with Dionysus – they'd disappeared about the same time, after all – but Tuck was clearly seeing something she wasn't.

Tuck carried Evie back over to the vanity and he chewed on his lip as he scrutinised it. "There used to be more things. This space here," he said, pointing towards it, "pretty sure there was a jewelry box. This drawer is ajar. Erato wouldn't leave anything ajar, surely," he pulled on it and surely enough it had clearly been rifled through. He pulled open the other drawers to find them in a similar state. "It's a mess in here. Someone went over this area and stole things. Didn't even cover their tracks very wel- Sorry, that isn't what this is about." He could harp on about proper thievery later.

"Why is it always the muses?"

"Because they used to be about guiding and inspiring humanity, and people in this country are taught to take what they want by the neck." There was a hot flare of anger beneath her words, one she didn't have to watch so carefully now that Evie was distracted by her father. "That combination puts them in one of the worst positions out of all of us— there," she said, sending her message, then standing up suddenly as she heard footsteps nearby. There was no accompanying prickling feeling of another immortal, and Ariadne cast a glance over at Tuck and Evie to make sure he'd heard it too. Keeping silent, Ariadne put her phone away, and flexed both her fists, just in case.

Tuck had been about to respond with a similar burst of anger, when there were footsteps and then the lock clicked. And Tuck had been about to reach out and grab the knife strapped to his ankle when he heard humming.

He didn't think anyone breaking into here to come after them would be humming. And thank goodness because Evie was with him! "Lunchtime, kitties!" the person called out, and the cats raced out of the bedroom.

Tuck moved to the door and peeked around the corner to see a woman there, leaning down to pet the cats. And of course Evie took that moment to let out a loud and happy gurgle, so hiding became strictly unnecessary as the woman looked up in alarm. "Hello!"

Tuck moved out into view and the woman startled. "It's okay!" Tuck said quickly, glad he had Evie with him now. Surely that made him look less imposing, yes? "We're friends of-" oh god, what was Erato's alias? "-Jasmine's."

"Oh, goodness!" the woman breathed out. "I live upstairs, I've been feeding the cats."

Tuck glanced back at Araidne, his eyebrow raised up in question. "My name is Michael. Nice to meet you. Did Jasmine ask you to take care of the cats?"

"Oh- No. No, her sister did. Or- Well she didn't say she was her sister, but similar hair."

Ariadne met Tuck's questioning look with one of her own, but gave the woman a smile, slightly puzzled. "I'm Harriet, I'm a sister-in-law. How long have you been feeding them? Who did the redhead say she was?"

"Hi, Harriet," the neighbour said, heading up to shake hands with Ariadne. "She dropped by on Saint Patrick's day. Said her name was Heather? Anyway, she wasn't sure how long Jasmine would be gone, but I don't mind. I just love these wee darlings," she said, bending down to pet the cats.

Tuck bounced Evie a few times because she was getting a little restless and she wanted to pet the cats too. "Do you know a Heather?" she asked Ariadne. He didn't know Hybris' alias, but she used it everywhere. She had even used it on him, but he had been drugged at the time.

Ariadne filed through the names in her head— yes, she knew several Heathers, and had known several more over the years, but throwing them into a Venn diagram with 'redheads' and 'threat' narrowed it down to a deeply unpleasant answer. "I know a Heather," she said, widening her eyes at Tuck in a significant this is bad look, before striding over to the bench to write her name and number down on a piece of Erato's perfumed note paper. "Please call me if the cats need anything," she said, passing the note to the neighbor. "If their food supply is getting low, if they need the vet, anything. Jaz wouldn't want to put you out of pocket if she gets caught up on tour again."

"Oh of course!" the neighbour said happily. "I'll just feed them and get out of your hair!" She did just that, fussing about and feeding the cats, changing their water. "I was thinking about coming to watch some TV down here with them later. Do you think Jasmine would mind? I don't want the kitties to get lonely."

"I think she'd like that," Tuck nodded, smiling slightly. Ever since that significant look from Ariadne, he'd been on edge.

When the neighbour took her leave, Tuck turned to Ariadne, Evie still on his hip. "Who is Heather?" he asked, though the cold, sick feeling in his gut told him he probably already knew.

Ariadne's eyes went wide when Tuck said it was okay for the neighbour to hang out here, but it was too late to stop him. She blew out a controlled breath to remind herself of the things she could control, and slid her hand through her hair, watching as the door closed and they were alone again. "It's a name Hybris uses," she said, in grim tones, pacing away from the door. "And what if she decides to come back here for more of Erato's things and that woman is here? No, no, I'm sorry, you didn't know. Cats get lonely. We'll work something out. Shit."

Tuck's jaw dropped and he backed up a few steps. He hadn't even thought of that. He sort of stumbled over to the couch and sat down, as his knees went weak. "I'm sorry," he breathed. "I didn't- Hybris drugged me a few months ago." Tuck covered Evie's ears, even if there was no way she could understand this. "I woke up chained to a bed. I managed to get away but she wanted to use me as points in her sick game- She had a photo of me and she found me again. Came for me at the parsonage, but Will was there and we managed to overpower her. That was only a few weeks ago and now she does this?!"

"Almighty fuck, Tuck," Ariadne swore, shaking potential futures out of her head and focusing on the present. No questioning what kind of games Hybris wanted to play. She sat down on Erato's pouf, and lay her hand on the arm of the couch, near Tuck but not trying to touch him. "Take a deep breath, sugar," she said. "We'll hunt her down. You breathe."

Tuck nodded, pulling his hands from Evie's ears. "Sorry, lovie," he cooed at her, when she fussed a little from having her hearing blocked off. He kissed her blonde hair and then glanced over at Ariadne, his expression horrified but resolved.

"I want to help. I'm breathing now, but I want to help find Erato. I can take Evie home to Addy or Will - he's still at work, but Patrick won't mind, he's her uncle. I- I feel like- Will and I, we managed to stop her taking me. We made her promise to stop playing her sick games with saints and clergy. And now she's gone after Erato instead."

Ariadne gave him a small frown of concern, and reached out to rub his knee. "It isn't your fault who she went after," she told him, as her phone buzzed from incoming messages. "She's Hybris, she's treacherous bitchtits incarnate, nothing you do is going to change that. We're going to focus on finding Erato, not on blaming anyone but Hybris, okay with that?"

"No, I didn't mean-" He wasn't blaming himself, he just wanted to help because he saw the way this had progressed. "No guilt," he assured her. "This isn't about me, it's about Erato. We're on the same page." He liked the reassurance of her rubbing his knee though, so he placed a hand over hers and he gave her a sad smile. "We're going to find her. Do you want me to help you tell your brother?"

Ariadne grimaced, squeezing Tuck's leg and glad her hand was in a hand-and-leg sandwich. "I'm not sure how I'm gonna do that," she admitted. "I haven't had to break bad news to him in— a long, long time. I have no idea how he's going to take it."

Tuck had only met Asterion on a few occasions, but he knew Much knew him quite well since they both worked at Diogenes. What he did know, was that he respected Asterion a lot. "He's a good man," Tuck said gently. "Perhaps if we approach him with a plan he can feel proactive instead of helpless." He had no doubt Asterion would want to help find Erato.

A good man, yes, but one who carried some serious trauma and since their reunion, she hadn't seen him under serious pressure. Ariadne could handle unpredictable – she was married to Dionysus, after all – so she wasn't going to avoid telling him, she just wasn't going to approach it recklessly. "A plan is an excellent idea," she agreed, as her phone buzzed again, insistently.

"Clio hasn't seen her in a couple of weeks," she said her messages as they came through. "Thalia, not since before St Patrick's Day. Urania not for longer than that. And Apollo is coming over." She glanced up at him. "Not sure if you want to be gone when he gets here or..."

Tuck made a face, but he could handle facing Apollo for Erato's sake. He just...might not tell Much. "He cursed one of my friends with cancer. Nearly killed her," Tuck said, "but, I know he cares for Erato. He found and rescued Clio, so he could be a great help. And finding her matters more than my unresolved feelings towards him. I'll stay."

"Fucking— treacherous king of the bitchtits, that man," Ariadne muttered, giving Tuck a sympathetic grimace of a smile. "But he's a good bet for finding her, so I think we just gotta get a little Machiavellian up in here, whatever it takes to get Erato back." She'd made much harder choices in order to save people than smiling nicely at Apollo, after all. Much, much harder choices.

She didn't need to think about that now, though. "Urania suggests flat out asking Hybris," she carried on, fiddling with her phone. "You shouldn't, but do you think I should?"

"Whatever it takes," he said, giving Ariadne's hand a squeeze. Then Tuck chewed on his lip for a moment before saying, "it could be a way to go. But I suggest Phantasos first? I recently met him and he told me Hybris is ridiculously open with her siblings. He was able to give us warning when she was headed our way. Without him she might have- Well. He might know, though I would wonder why he hadn't told anyone."

"That sounds better," Ariadne thought about it for a moment, then nodded. "Phantasos first, yes. Besides," she added, with a dark note of realism. "I don't really want to be pissing Hybris off while Dionysus is off on a bender." Sure, it felt archaic to be relying on a powerful husband for protection, but it was also realistic. Their pantheon knew Dionysus would rip anyone who touched her to shreds, literally, and probably with his very own teeth. The threat of that probably wouldn't stop Hybris having a go, though (she was Hybris, after all, about as in-touch with her self-preservation instincts as Ares was with his feminine side) so it wasn't bright to make herself into a target till Dionysus got back from... wherever he was.

Tuck pulled out his phone and he started to compose a text to Phantasos. "Sounds like a good idea to me," he said with a nod. "I would very much appreciate it if you remained safe." He finished up the text and then he looked up at her, his eyes catching on that beautiful face, her eyes so worried.
