Being at MIT was pretty much a dream come true. From the moment she'd started she felt like she belonged, and the classes were just phenomenal. She discussed her thesis with her professors and more then one had offered to be her mentor and defender. She made a few friends, but generally kept them at arms length. She didn't really want to, but every so often random things showed up that proved that no, her grandfather hadn't forgotten her.
The only consolation was that she kept up to date with Victor, and kept in touch via phone and emails. She often wondered if she bothered him, but he'd never asked her to not stay in touch either. She took that as a good sign. She missed him though, a bit more then she admitted to herself. So when the break had come up she'd invited him to come by. She'd spend hours pouring over the email, making sure it didn't sound too desperate, or that he felt he had to come.
She made sure it was a friendly offer, and to make sure if he declined she wouldn't be upset. But he'd still said he would come, which did make her happy. The little apartment she had wasn't big, but there was space on the couch if he needed it, and she had plenty of snacks to be a good host. She'd spend a few moments making it tidy, and when there was a knock she smiled.
She was surprised how nice it was to see him when she opened the door, and wondered if it was okay to offer a hug. She didn't, not yet, but did step back. "Hey stranger. Come in, before all the heat leaves."
