It was one of those beautiful sunny days, made even more so because they were so rare. John pulled his car to the curb in front of a light blue Arts and Crafts two story home, and leaned down, looking out the passenger window to check the address. Yes, this was the Kimigawa home.
He picked up the gift bag on the passenger seat, got out, and locked his car. The breeze was still a little cool, plucking at his jacket, but it smelled fresh. Somewhere close by, lilacs were blooming, heavily-sweet. Bright gold forsythia splashed through the neighborhood, which was older, but still wonderfully-kept. Birds called in the trees.
It was an ideal place for a child to grow up. John wondered if Nana planned to live here with her mother for very long. She could do far worse.
John strode up the walkway and took the porch steps two at a time. He rang the doorbell, then remembered his sunglasses. Clara had often told him sunglasses made him look forbidding, and for once, he didn't want that. Slipping them off, he folded them and tucked one ear down the neck of his sweater just as the door opened.
