Grace stood, and everything stayed where it should, thank god. She stepped closer and let Jeff ease her into her coat, his hands smoothing her collar and the shoulders. It was a thoughtful little gesture, and she smiled when she turned to face him once more. Slinging her purse over her shoulder, she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out her keys, putting them into his hand. "You be careful with my baby," she said, her voice teasing. Even though Norah teased her, calling it the Nerdmobile, she loved her dark green PT Cruiser; it was the only new car she'd ever owned.
Tipping her head, she looked at Bethany. "Be careful," she said. Being a government employee and telling people--no matter how obliquely--that they could cheat the system for a short while was not conducive to keeping that job.
Bethany nodded and said, "Good luck," which seemed to be the only thing people said here, before glancing at Jeff again and turning away to prepare for the next happy patient.
Grace slipped her arm through Jeff's offered one as they began to walk toward the exit. "How are you feeling?"
