Ellie is supposed to be grown now ([info]lady_dragon) wrote in [info]neeps,

Entry tags:! ic/ooc, # portree, alasdair buchanan, elspeth macfusty, meaghan mccormack, sara scrimgeour, x-joy willison

IC/OOC: Unconventional training session
Who: Pride players (Ellie assumes Tor is invited, and last minute invites Cav)
Where: MacFusty Dragon Reserve
What: Agility drills with dragons. Lots of dodging unexpected things. Bonfire and social at the end of the night.
When: Sunday, 1 October noon and onward

Look it's harmless potter couldn't cut it

The team had been instructed to arrive at the Reserve between noon and 12:30. Ellie and her sister Davina will be there to great them and direct them to where they are meeting. Their meeting location is actually the starting line for Winter Solstice Broom Race (that goes from the Reserve to Montrose -- more thoughts on this later), so there is place to set up. Also it is a reasonable area for people to be flying brooms through with managed risk.

As people are arriving, other members of the MacFusty clan are about keen to give people tours. Ellie will very happily direct people to where the young dragons nest.

At 12:30 there will be a brief team meeting going over the goals for the day before everyone takes to their brooms. Of note, neither of the seekers are present. If prompted Ellie will say they have been excused ahead of an intensive seeker training tomorrow.

At 1pm, people will take to their brooms for an afternoon of weird training drills. More about these drills below. Also please feel free to add your own.

Drill #1

This is more of a progressive warm up than anything. After setting up appropriate containment fields for the bludgers, Ellie is going to have the team run the broom racing course that goes through the Reserve. Consider it basic time trials. Who is fastest.

Once everyone is feeling comfortable with this, she is going to get some volunteers and start slamming bludgers into people. Or at the very least trying to.

I suppose having a medic around for this would be reasonable.

Scrimmy is actually a good racer because for once...TINY PREVAILS! TAKE THAT YOU GIANT PEOPLE SLOWED DOWN BY YOUR SIZE!!

Also once her lap/chance is over she'll volunteer to whack bludgers at people before her next run through.

(Yeah I suppoooooose a medic would be good but :P )

Alasdair, as per his previous discussion with Ellie, is one of the people volunteering to hit bludgers at the appropriate juncture. He's pretty decent at it, too, given that his dad used to be a Portree beater in Catriona McCormack's days.

While not the fastest of the team on a broom (he is, after all, over six feet tall), he makes up for it with the control over the thing. He has quick reaction to the changes of the landscape and anything sent at him, and posts a respectable time as a result.

If Alasdair is racing in the second half of the drill, Ellie would very clearly tell him before he starts. "You do know my intention is to knock you from your broom?" Because he's still recovering, and this is part of her being just a little responsible.

Alasdair gives a little shrug, a little "que sera, sera" stoicism in his body lamguage. It's what beaters are there for, right?

"I'll give as good as I get, boss" he replies. He's keen to impress with his work ethic.

Joy's speed is more about manoeuvrability than pure pace, so ironically she does better once the random bludger element comes into play. She'll take a knock or two, probably because she's trying to be too clever / fly the most cunning if dangerous line, but she's also pretty good at quickfire risk assessment and decision-making, so they'll most likely only be glancing blows.

She's willing to smack bludgers if you want, but warns that she is genuinely rubbish at it... and she really is. (She has good hands with a Quaffle, but hitting a bludger with a bat is a different feat of coordination.)

Bonus round +

Per Meaghan's critique. A bonus round for this drill will created -- perhaps even as a bridge to Drill #2 -- in which the player has to protect an object (fake dragon egg used for later, because themes here) while 3 people are trying to steal it and everyone else is on bludger aiming duty.

I imagining a mix of Jedi, Clothespin Ninja, and Smog's Jewels here in this task. (Also I am apparently a very big experiential education nerd.)

I LIKE it. Though I'm not sure I found the right Jedi game, I guess it doesn't matter since those are just inspiration.

Not sure if this is just a Meaghan-as-keeper round or if everyone gets a chance? If the latter, she still wants first stab. Are the beaters trying to hit the keeper, the other three, or everyone?

Yes this drill is for everyone as Meaghan brought up a good point. Limited space matters. Beaters would be trying to hit everyone, but more so the keeper/protector.

Joy is pretty bad at this; she's a lot better at focus than she is at broad awareness and keeping an eye out in every direction. As she starts getting flustered about it, and then laughing at herself, she gets even worse.

Meaghan's a better flyer than she generally gets to show on the pitch, though she's also a little rusty when it comes to having this level of maneuverability. She enjoyed getting to stretch flying muscles that are a bit out of action. She did a lot of barrel rolls. She did a lot of laughing. She's definitely not the fastest because 1. out of practice and 2. fairly tallish, but she had fun leaning into dodges more, probably went offtarget a couple times and had to pull back in.

David's an excellent flyer, but steadier more so than fast. He's better once the bludgers are introduced, though he does get a bit tired towards the end because he needs to work on pacing himself better.

And guess who just unintentionally signed himself up for endurance sessions. Don't you know quidditch matches can last DAAAAAYS?

Look. This is his first year playing for anyone other than Hogwarts, where matches do not go on for days. He knows he needs to work on this.

Luag would've volunteered to slam bludgers into people. If just because he knows all the good hiding and blind spots around for maximum difficulty. XD

Flying wise, he's fast and knows the terrain, so he'd do pretty well. I'm all for Ellie tossing something new at him during his run if just because he has a bit of an unfair advantage there.

Oh. She in doubt riles up the nest of dragonlings during his run and send them airborne.

Tor takes a turn in this and while he's not the fastest, he's not the slowest either. He'll volunteer for bludger duty, but he's better on speed than bludgers
