Who: Leanne and Marcus
When: Monday
Where: Tea Room
What: Talking?
Rating: TBD

Leanne felt especially lonely at this time of year. They were starting to play Christmas music all over, and she wasn't sure how much time she was going to get to spend with her family this year. Normally when she had to work extra long hours in the hospital over holidays, at least she had Katie there to spend time with. But their relationship had been strained--and rightly so. It would never be the same now that Katie knew Leanne had feelings for her. And Katie was straight. Leanne didn't know what she was going to do with herself this Christmas.

She went up to the tea room after dealing with a particularly nasty case, and flopped into one of the chairs. The room was mostly empty, for which she was thankful. She closed her eyes and let her head loll backward, her face pointing up at the ceiling.

Marcus made a small yelp as she jumped, moving his head out of the way quickly so they wouldn't bump heads.

"Aye, you're smiling now though, no?" He grinned again. "You looked like a pigeon left one on your head or something. In fact, that's what I was looking for."

"I'm smiling now, yeah." Leanne said, giving him a little grin. But it faded slightly into confusion. "...you were looking for pigeon droppings?" She asked, confused.

"Yes, pigeon droppings. Because you were frowning and it was the only reason why I could think of a frown that large." He replied.

"Speaking of droppings, I have a new type of coffee bean harvested from civet droppings. You want to try? It's quite good. It's from Southeast Asia!" Marcus loved all things unconventional and different.

"Don't you think I would have cleaned them up if a pigeon dropped on my head?" Leanne asked, frowning still. Did he think she was that dirty?

"...from what droppings?" She asked, cocking her head to the side. "You're just all about the droppings today, aren't you?"

"Civet," he responded. "It's like a ferret or a weasel or something. Quite cute, actually. I made Tim's new girl try some of it. You know, Emma. Blonde. Kinda looks like Katie," Oh, oops. He wasn't sure if Katie was a bad topic or not. He laughed nervously.

"Granted, she scrunched her nose at it but hey, I think you're a more adventurous type of girl. What do you think? It really is quite delicious!"

"....right." Leanne said, nodding a little. Why did he have to bring up Katie? Carp. "I think I know her. She was a few years behind us, yeah? ...works down in the Janus Thickey Ward?" She wasn't smiling, though. She was thinking. Trying not to think of Katie.

"Sure, I'll try some." She added, letting the smile come back. She was adventurous, wasn't she? "How is Tim?" She added, climbing to her feet to follow him toward the kitchen. She assumed the coffee was there.

"Right, right. Her." He smiled quickly, trying to rush through that conversation." He beamed when she said yes, though.

"Tim's good. He seems really happy with her. He even came to visit me while I was gone for the month," he continued as they walked into the kitchen. He brought down a box full of the civet beans and scooped out a handful, beginning the preparation of the stuff.

"I almost wish I moved in with him instead, but I guess now I'm glad I didn't. Wouldn't have to be around all of that. At least Lisa's single," Marcus didn't know that she was dating Roger. Not yet.

"Yeah," Leanne said, following him. "You were gone for an awful long time. Is everything all right?" She asked, not wanting to pry, but wanting to show enough concern to be courteous.

She watched him with the beans. Weird. They came out of droppings? Sounded... a little gross and rather expensive. But she'd give anything a try once. Besides, coffee was made with boiling water, right? That was sterile. Sure.

"Right." Leanne agreed. "I'd hate to have a roommate in a fresh, new relationship. All the giggling and shite." She didn't normally swear.

A simple charm zapping out of his wand struck the beans and they returned to a nearby mug as a steaming mocha colored brew.

"Everything's fine." Lies. Marcus' face became a frown. But the only way to get the story out of him was to get him drunk. He refused to talk about it sober. "Had to deal with home things, was all." Right. His dad's death was just a 'home thing'.

He passed the mug to her with a grin. "Drink it while it's hot. Don't think about the fact that it was expelled from a weasel's anus."

Leanne gave a laugh. "Still on the anus thing, yeah?" She said, giving up on the pressing as to where he'd been and what he'd been doing. She wanted to be there for comfort if he needed it, but she wasn't going to force anything.

"All right, cheers." She said, taking the handle of the cup and lifting it for a sip. It tasted... well, tasted like coffee. Good coffee, but coffee nonetheless.

"...it's good."

"See? Told you." He watched her with delight. It made him grin to see people try new foods. And like them.

"So what's your deal? Why were you trudging in all sad-like today?"

"It's the holidays." Leanne responded with a bit of a shrug. She sipped again from the coffee cup and gave a half wince.

"Can I add some sugar to this?"

He nodded and summoned some sugar onto the table.

"The holidays make you sad. Have a bad experience with a Fir or something as a child?"

Leanne scooped a little sugar into the cup and stirred it. "No, no, I just... I'm stuck here for the holidays, and without having Katie around to... well, I feel like I don't have much family this holiday."

"To hell with family," Marcus muttered under his breath as he stared at the countertop. He looked up at her.

"Makes you kind of miss Hogwarts, doesn't it?" He said with a small smile. He started to reminisce. While he didn't have the most amazing experience, it was, comparatively, nicer than this.

Leanne caught the mutter, but didn't quite understand all the words. She assumed that he felt the same way she did, that he was going to be lonely this holiday season, too.

"Yeah, actually. I miss the simpler times." She said, feeling a wave of nostalgia.

"Yeah. I didn't have to worry about having to look for a better job because of inheritances or wills," Marcus mumbled a little too quickly. Oops. He wasn't supposed to mention that. He snapped his head to her to gauge her reaction.

Leanne caught it. She was staring at him when he snapped his head up.

"What about inheritances or wills? What about finding a better job?"

"Nothing," he said, before sipping his cup.

Leanne was frowning. "Did someone die?" Why would he need to get a better job because someone died?

"No," he replied curtly. He was a bad liar.

Leanne was watching him carefully.

"I don't believe you." She said, one of her eyebrows raised. "My little nephew Orion does that exact same thing when he lies."

"Well, I'm not your nephew Orion," Marcus replied childishly. Standing up, he started to tidy the mugs away. The way he was acting, he might as well be.

"I'm sorry, I just thought... if you need someone to talk to, or anything..."

Talking. That was the last thing he wanted. There was enough talking done in the last two weeks. Yelling, more like.

"Thanks," he replied curtly. "I'm fine though. But I really ought to get back to my fruitcake."

"Sure." Leanne said, worried she'd done something wrong.

"Well, lemme know if you need me to bring you a drink." She added, turning to head out of the kitchen.
