Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Leanne, Roger and Brighton
When: Backdated to last night
Where: Roger's place
What: Dinner Delivery
Rating: TBD

Leanne made dinner again. This time she took broccoli and put it in with the mac and cheese, along with the hot dogs. That way she wouldn't have to make an extra salad on the side, and she could focus on dessert. She made brownies this time, with little chocolate candies in them. It was a very good meal.

The wine they'd shared the last time was gone by now. Sometimes when she was alone at night, Leanne turned to wine for comfort. She needed a bit of comforting lately, as she kept seeing Katie in the halls at St. Mungo's. So, anyway, Leanne picked up a new bottle of wine, and a bottle of sparkling apple juice, then headed over to Roger's place.

She hoped he remembered she was coming. She knocked on the front door.

"Well, I wouldn't expect them to sell something this decadent in a store," he said.

"What's deck-dent?" Brighton asked.

Leanne grinned, turning to Brighton. "It means... luxurious. Or self-indulgent. Delicious." She gave Roger a grin, then turned back to Brighton.

"What word would you use to describe the brownies?"

"Yummyful," he said before taking a big, snarly bite.

Roger snorted.

Leanne gave a little laugh. "That's the best word I can think of." She said, grinning to Brighton.

Brighton washed his brownie down with cider. "So what're we gonna do now?" He asked. He was hoping it wasn't near his bed time, but of course, it was.

Leanne glanced at her wristwatch and then to Roger. "I don't know if we have time to do much else, little buddy."

"My bed time sucks," Brighton said.

"Hey, what did we decide about that word?"

"It's not nice." Brighton huffed. "Will you read to me then?" Brighton asked Leanne.

Leanne grinned softly. "Maybe we could have your dad clean up the dishes, and I'll go with you to read you a story?" She said, giving Roger another smile. Then she stood from her chair. "C'mon, let's go brush our teeth."

"Alright. Remember your molars too, okay buster?" Roger cleared the table and started washing the dishes while Leanne and Brighton left the room.

"We won't forget." Leanne said, grinning, as she led Brighton down the hall toward the bathroom.

"I love brushing my teeth." She said to the boy. "I always feel so clean afterward."

Roger listened the the voices from down the hall as he cleaned up dinner. It was good for Brighton to have a female influence. Roger knew he wouldn't be nearly as charming if his father had raised him alone.

The two went to the bathroom to brush their teeth--Leanne conjured a toothbrush for herself, and borrowed some of his toothpaste--then to his bedroom. She waited in the hall so he could get his pajamas on in some privacy, then she stepped into the room to read him a story.

"What do you want to hear tonight?" She asked, taking a seat on his bed.

"The Cackling Stump," Brighton said, getting an illustrated anthology of Beedle the Bard out from his book shelf. He climbed into bed and slid under the covers.

"Oh, I love this one!" Leanne said, taking the book with a grin. She proceeded to read the story, breaking into all the voices and adding little flairs here and there. It was probably different than he'd ever heard it before, since she added in a sentence here, an adjective there, a funny voice or two.

Leanne loved reading stories to the younger cousins. She was pretty good at it, too.

The story was considerably longer than Where The Wild Things Are, and by the end of it, Brighton was sleeping. Roger came in half way and leaned on the door, listening.

Leanne looked up when she was almost finished and saw that he was sleeping. She lowered her voice considerably so she wouldn't wake him, but finished the story. Maybe he'd hear it. She closed the book, then stood to tug the blankets gently up and around his shoulder. She set the book down on his bedside table and turned to leave his room. When she saw Roger there she paused a little, and blushed.

"How long have you been there?" She whispered to him as she approached.

"Since he ordered them to cut down the tree," Roger said, leading the way out of the room and turning the light off. He walked straight to the living room sofa and sat down. "Nice work with the voices. I've got competition."

Leanne followed him out. She still had a half glass of wine left from dinner, and figured that she'd finish it off before heading home.

"I've got a bit of practice with my little cousins." Leanne said, picking up the leftover glass and moving to sit with him on the sofa. "I'm rusty, though." She added, grinning.

"I don't think Brighton noticed you were rusty," he said. "So, how have you been?" He knew people never really said much about the real quality of their lives around kids.

"I've been..." Missing my best friend. To be honest, she was thankful for the distraction that Roger and Brighton served to her in her life, but she was also thinking it was time to get back to her life, wasn't it? "I've been good. Spending a lot of time with my family lately. My cousin Bernadette has four little ones, so I've been helpin' her with them a lot lately."

"You're just knee deep in kids, huh?" Roger only had the one in his life, and he'd almost lost him.

Leanne blushed. "I've got a lot of family." She said, then shrugged softly. "I'm one of twenty-something cousins, and more than half of my cousins have at least one child. Some of my aunts and uncles aren't that much older than I am, too, so... it gets insane at family parties. Honestly, there aren't many places big enough to hold us all."

"So how do you keep track of everyone?" Roger came from a family of rich people who had one or two kids and then went back to champagne parties.

"I have a quilt," Leanne lifted her hands to help her explain. "It hangs on my wall, and the quilt os of a family tree... new names show up when family members are added."

"Handy." He was sure that the Davies tree was pretty narrow. "So it keeps up so you don't have to?"
