Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Tim and Emma
When: Backdated a couple hours
Where: Tim's place
What: Planning a Halloween party

Tim had sent directions to his place a bit earlier, so he knew that Emma was going to come. He had the place cleaned up, not that it was all that messy to begin with. He made tea, too, and some of that frozen cookiedough you put in the oven. It was silly, but Tim was a nice guy, and that's what he did.

He had a catalog of Halloween decorations on the table, and was idly flipping through it as the cookies cooked. He hopped up to pull the cookies out, then hurried to answer the door at the sound of the knock.

"Thank you," she smiled, reaching for a cup and the teapot. She poured him a cup first, smiling as she passed it to him, then poured herself one, reaching for the sugar. "Well, it's far nicer then the closet I live in," Emma laughed, taking a couple of scoops of sugar. She nabbed a cookie and took a bite. "Mmmm, and you can bake, too... some girl must have snatched you up years ago," she grinned, not-so-subtly trying to see if he had a girlfriend.

Tim took a seat next to her--kiddy corner to where she was sitting. The table in the kitchen was rather small. He gave her a smile and a soft "thank you" as she passed him the tea.

"You live in a closet?" Tim asked, smirking, as he lifted his tea for a sip. "Uh... thanks." Admit they were frozen and all he did was bake 'em? Never.

"No, no girl." Though, you wouldn't be able to tell by the apartment. His place looked as if it already had a woman's touch. He could tell she was digging, though, and he was flattered. He was doing his best not to think of Audrey.

"They're always married or gay."

Emma let out a playful gasp. "Oh, my god, that's the same problem I always have! All the good ones are married or gay!" she laughed. Emma sipped her tea, grinning over at him.

"As for my apartment... sometimes I feel like one is a crowd. I can't complain though," she admitted, breaking off a piece of a cookie to eat. "I'm not living with my parents and I'm not living off of my parents at the moment." Granted, Emma would have loved to have spent some of her inheritence left to her when her father died, but she needed to be close to the hospital for her mother for the time being.

Tim gave a soft laugh. "Which happens more to you? Gay or married?" He asked, enjoying that they had something in common. Even if they were mostly joking. Mostly.

"I've been thinking about getting a cat or a dog or something." Tim said, glancing around. "I had an owl, but he was old. He passed a few months ago." He was more of a servant than a friend, though. Tim never got close with him.

"These days it seems like more and more of them are married... and yet many of them are gay," she sighed dramatically, taking a sip of her tea.

Emma glanced around again. "I think a cat would be a good companion here - a dog might think it's just a place to run laps or something," she scrunched her nose, not being a dog person, herself.

Tim gave a little laugh. "Right."

Tim reached for a cookie. "Yes, cats are good for company. Not very useful for anything else, though." He grinned.

"So, party planning?"

"At the end of a long day, I would much rather prefer a companion who will just curl up beside me and sleep as opposed to one that wants to jump around and beg to be played with," she pointed out. Which, ironically enough, was kind of like finding the right kind of guy...

"Party planning," she grinned, brushing the crumbs off her fingers before she reached for a catalog. "Do you want to have a super-scary party, or just some people gathered in costumes?"

Funny, that's exactly what Tim was looking for in a woman. Well, and for her name to be Audrey. But he definitely appreciated a laid-back woman who would cuddle close and not expect anything from him at the end of a long day.

"I think that's a good description of an ideal mate, actually." He didn't want to say boy- or girl-friend, because he wasn't sure which way Emma swung. He didn't want to assume.

"Right. Party planning. Well, I want it to be a good party. Doesn't necessarily have to be scary."

Emma had to laugh. "I was just thinking the same thing, actually. It would be nice to find a guy that didn't demand attention after I've worked a long shift and possibly overtime," she grinned, reaching for another catalogue.

"OK... well, the best parties have good music and good food... and good company, of course," she smiled. "So, we would have to compile some good music to set the mood of the party then find some place that caters because... I'm not cooking everything," she laughed.

Guy. So, she liked blokes. That was good to know. Tim gave a little smirk. They were looking for the same kind of thing. Too bad he was head over heels in love with someone else... of course, someone he could never have.

"I could ask Marcus to make the food." Tim offered. It was a good thing to have a best friend who was such an amazing chef.

She nodded at the idea. "If he doesn't mind cooking. How many people are you looking to invite? Where are you looking to have this party? Here?" she asked, looking around. "This is cool for a small gathering... but... not a big party," she pointed out.

"I doubt he will." Tim said, then shrugged. "I could always pay him, too."

He shifted, moving his tail. It popped up above the table for a moment, then disappeared again.

"I think we'll keep it small. Maybe a dozen. Probably less."

Emma caught the moment out of the corner of her eye and peered over for a second, squinting as if trying to see something that wasn't there. "Umm... that sounds like a decent sized party," she nodded, flipping to another page.

"I hate orange," Emma admitted, seeing it splashed everywhere in the catalog, shrugging her shoulders a little. "I don't know why, it just doesn't coordinate with anything... except black, so I guess that's why they're together for Halloween," she laughed, glancing over to his chair again, wondering what she might have seen.

"Not too bad. I've got plenty of seating for twelve." He gave a little nod. There were the kitchen chairs, the couches... the living room was bigger than it led on. He could always charm it, too.

"Yeah. Orange is... well, I like pumpkins. And oranges." He said, turning to get a look at the catalog she was perusing. "Maybe we'll have to use green and purple for the decorations, then, instead."

"No, I like the idea of pumpkins... maybe we can make Jack-'o-Lanterns and charm them to float around the room... with candles inside of them," she suggested, holding her hands up as if to demonstrate. "Then... you can dim the lighting a little so the candlelight from the faces glow around the flat," Emma grinned.

"That sounds good." Tim grinned. "Great, actually. I like the idea of glowy, orange pumpkins wandering around. It'll give people something to talk about. Or we could even have guests come over early and make their own jack-0-lanterns."

His tail moved again. Showing up over the table for just a moment before disappearing.

"Oh, that's an even better ideas!" she grinned, clapping her hands together. "I know a place outside of London that has a really great pumpkin patch," she told him, writing a few things down.

She saw it again and couldn't keep her mouth shut. "What was that?" she blurted out, glancing up at him.

"We'll have to go pick up some pumpkins before the party, then." Tim gave a little nod, as if making plans in his head.

He paused when she blurted. "What?" He asked, turning to look where she was looking. "Oh." She didn't know??

...awkward.

"Uh. My tail." He said, lifting it above the table so she could see. It was like a monkey's tail; limber, thin. He could use it like a third hand.

She was taken aback at first, then a curious frown appeared on her face. "How... have you always had it?" she asked him curiously. Emma peered over at the slowly moving tail. "It noticed it before but... you can move it really fast... or does it move on its own?"

"No." Tim said, shaking his head a little. "I was caught at a Quidditch Riot, got a couple hexes that affected me in a weird way." He moved the tail again.

"I control it. Apparently it's an extension of my spinal cord, so we're unable to remove it."

She thought maybe he'd gotten it in the war, but a Quidditch riot? That was just wrong. Emma scooted the tiniest of inches closer - she didn't want to appear to be staring, but she wanted to see his tail. "That's crazy - why can't a healer tie off your nerves that connect to the spinal cord and remove it?" she asked, but mostly to herself. "Well, then again, if it's a part of your spinal cord... might do damage," she sighed, pursing her lips. "Wow... does it ever hurt?"

"We don't want to risk it--in case severing the nerves will cause permanent damage. I'd hate to go numb." The worst would be if severing the nerves paralyzed part of him. They just weren't sure what to do. And it seemed that the longer he kept the tail, the more firmly it became attached.

He was getting used to it, though. He shifted in his seat and used his tail to pick up his teacup.

"Well, it's like any part of my body. It's odd, though. I have all these new sensations." She hadn't gone running for the door, that was a good sign. Normally he didn't talk so much about his tail, just kept it hidden from view.

Emma's eyes were wide and she had to laugh a little when she saw him lift his tea with the tail. "That's... I can't believe you can manipulate it like that," she said, completely fascinated by the tail. She tried not to stare because he might think she was rude and she picked up her own tea and flipped a page in the book.

"So... what if, going along with the pumpkins with candles, you light the whole flat with candles? And drape all the furniture in black, or charm it all black, to give an eerie, yet not too scary look," she suggested.

He didn't mind her staring, actually. For what felt like the first time, Tim didn't mind talking about it. He even felt awkward talking to the healers about it normally. But there was something about Emma that made him feel a little more comfortable. "It's taken some work to figure out how to move it right."

"I think that's great." Tim had some black cloth from the memorial service held for his parents. It'd be nice to give it a spin and do something positive with it. "I've got some black cloth for the furniture already."

She wasn't about the judge him because of something that he'd had no control over. Emma would wonder for awhile, though, if there really was any way to remove it. She couldn't believe that the hexes couldn't be reversed. "Like it had a mind of its own?" she asked, the tiniest smile playing on her lips.

"Perfect - I can get some black table cloths to cover your end tables and this table," she gestured, making a couple more notes. "Ooh, and maybe some tapered purple candles for all the tables," she envisioned.
