Who: Lisa and Scarlet
Where: Hospital tea room
When: Monday evening
What: chatting?

Lisa frowned. It had been a particularly slow day and it was starting to look like it was being followed by an even slower night. The transition from morning shift to night shift was always one that she hated, but this was just terrible. She hadn't seen a customer in hours, which meant she wasn't going to be leaving with any money.

She was just trying to figure out what to do with all the extra time she seemed to have (read a book maybe?) when someone walked in. Lisa was so excited to finally have a customer that she hurried over without even really looking at them. It wasn't until after her usual greeting, "Hi, I'm Lisa, can I get you anything?" -- asking how customers were in a hospital was proven to be a bad idea so Lisa tried to stick to non-triggering questions -- that she realized that they were in fact another employee of Mungo's.

"Oh," was all she said before she smiled at them.

Scarlet was tired. She was running on three hours of sleep and going on her fourteenth hour of work; even normally, this was not a good place to be. On top of that, her aunt had just informed her the night before that her cousin was getting married, yet again reminding the poor witch that she was unhappily single. In short, it was a bad day all around, and as she walked into the cafe and slumped onto the chair in the corner.

When Lisa walked over to her, Scarlet didn't make eye contact with the other girl. It wasn't that she was trying to be rude, she was just too tired to raise her head. However, when Lisa mistakenly took her for a patient or a relative, she let out a soft chuckle. "S'fine, Turpin," the redhead offered, finally bringing her eyes up to look at the other girl. "How's your shift?" She hadn't spoken to anyone other than some guy trying to make off with a case of highly addictive potions, and shouting didn't do much in the way of intelligent conversation. She needed a pick me up, and if that meant ordering coffee from some cute waitress, albeit a straight cute waitress, then Scarlet was okay with that.

With a flick of Lisa's wand, she summoned a coffee mug and the pot of coffee over to the table. Scarlet looked like she needed a cup. And Lisa was happy to oblige.

"Okay," she responded, pouring the liquid into the cup. There was cream and sugar on the table. "Slow," she added after a moment.

She walked to the counter and replaced the coffee pot. Then, she grabbed a tray of pastries that Marcus had just baked. She moved back to the girl and held them out to her.

"Want one?"

"Tell me about it," Scarlet bemoaned as Lisa walked away. She knew security at St. Mungo's was important in case things went seriously wrong, which they were aught to do sometimes, but her job usually involved hours upon hours of walking up and down the hallways, making small talk with patients, and helping to restrain the psych ward regulars. It was easy to get bored and restless, but she wouldn't have it any other way. At least here she knew she was making a difference, as opposed to going into the ministry to work.

Scarlet took a pastry greedily, having not eaten since lunch time. "Thank you," she mumbled through her first bite, "I would say Mondays are normally slow at cafes, but it's never slow around here." Not any more at least, not since the end of the war. The woman she replaced back in 1999, Laura, said that sometimes they could go days without any major ailments. These days, they were lucky to get in a few hours.

"Mm," Lisa hummed, thoughtfully. "Maybe no one wants coffee." It was an absurd thought -- didn't everyone want coffee? But it seemed fitting as she hadn't had a customer since one.

Placing the tray on the table, in case Scarlet wanted another one, Lisa leaned on one of the chairs. It was nice to talk to someone other than Marcus, even if no one was really saying anything of substance. It got lonely in the tea room sometimes.

"Any trouble lately?"

Scarlet scrunched up her face at the idea that someone wouldn't want coffee. She had grown addicted to the black caffeine in her sixth year, when sleeping became an impossibility due to the war. In her seventh year, when she spent most of her time protecting first and second years and healing their injuries, coffee became a necessity, and she found herself running on purely caffeine.

"There was this one guy, earlier." She replied, taking a sip of her coffee, "He tried to make off with some substance that's apparently "highly addictive" according to the nurse on duty. Personally, I never heard of it." Shrugging, she continued, "Caught him on the third floor though, which is good, considering he could have made a fortune off that stuff. Maybe I should have kept it, sold it on the corner and retired to the Cayman Islands."

She smiled at the last bit, She felt old, sometimes, even though she was considerably young, not even twenty five. Living through a war and watching people die changed her, in some ways, and her usually perky attitude changed with it, although she continued to maintain an aura of happiness for the most part.

Lisa let out a light, quiet giggle at her comment about the Cayman Islands. She'd never been there, but it sure sounded nice. And she was smart enough to know that Scarlet was only joking, even if it sounded like a rather brilliant idea.

"Shouldn't we have protective wards around those sorts of things?" It was easy to steal from Muggles. They didn't know how to properly store their belongings. But wizards should know better, right? If the bloke was sly enough to get around whatever spell was put in place, Lisa felt he should have just been able to make off with it. It was only fair.

Course, her moral compass didn't always point north.

"Oh we do," Scarlet replied in her over-used comforting voice. She hated making the hospital seem safer than it was, especially when speaking with other employees. It wasn't that St. Mungo's was unsafe, it was just difficult to keep track of all the assassination attempts and stolen potions and healing salve that had been taking place on a regular basis ever since the War started. "He was just quite intelligent. The average thief keeps getting smarter and smarter, you know?"

Scarlet took another pastry, this one slightly blackberry in taste, and continued. "'Course, I'd've let him go just for being smart enough to get through the wards, but I'm not exactly in charge of making the rules, just enforcing them. Besides, who knows what he was going to use those potions for? I don't even know what they do. He'd have had to be looking for that potion." Scarlet didn't like what that meant. If a robbery was premeditated, that usually meant a second or third attempt to retrieve the desired item would be made. And considering how tight the security was around the closet the potion came out of, Scarlet was pretty sure whoever wanted it was quite determined.

"Nothing to worry about though," she stated airily, not quite sure if she was reassuring herself or Lisa.

Lisa nodded. She completely agreed with Scarlet, even if she wouldn't admit it, about letting him keep it. The second part just made her nervous. If someone was looking for that potion, it probably meant he would come back, right? Lisa shuddered at the thought. But when Scarlet told her not to worry, it was as if her nerves calmed down immediately.

"Sounds exciting, though." It was a side comment, one to keep the talk going. She hated it when people left her for better conversation and she was afraid Scarlet would do the same. "I mean," Lisa swallowed, "getting to run around and chase people all over the place. I bet it's fun sometimes."

Standing around a cafe waiting for people to come to you...that wasn't fun. Not in Lisa's standards anyways. But it was a job and if jobs were supposed to be fun, they'd be called play.

Scarlet smiled. "Oh it is quite fun," she assured Lisa as she bit into her pastry, "I prefer it to just about anything else in the world, actually, besides maybe talking to pretty birds like you." She stopped for a moment and blushed before bumbling through her words again, "Oh dear, didn't mean to say that. What I meant was, it can be quite fun. Only it isn't when people are doing illegal stuff and I can't stop them and then..." her voice dropped off for a moment as she tried to figure out how to phrase the next part.

"And then it's just awfully awful, because I never want to allow the illegal stuff to happen, but I'm not Merlin, really, or even Helga Hufflepuff. She was quite the healer, you know? Saved King Arthur's life more than once, she did." Her words stopped abruptly, like a broom crashing into a wall, and she smiled at Lisa again, trying to make the other girl forget the come on.

Lisa giggled and blushed, clearly flattered as the other girl stammered on. It was endearing, really, watching Scarlet try to cover up her words. She didn't mind of course. Hardly anyone called her pretty. If anything, Lisa appreciated the compliment and took it, gladly.

"Thanks," she said, taking a seat at the table, if only because her legs were tired of standing. "And I didn't know. I don't really know a lot about anything other than how to clean a table," she joked. "But I can see where you're coming from about wanting to stop all the crime. That's mighty ambitious, that is. I admire that."

The redhead startled. "Er, you're welcome," she replied. Normally, straight girls had an issue with her hitting on them. "I think you're much smarter than you think. And cleaning a table looks like it could be pretty hard." She looked up at Lisa and smiled. "And, yeah, the Hat wanted me in Slytherin for about three seconds before thinking better of it."

Scarlet looked at the clock behind Lisa's head and, upon realizing the time pushed back her chair. "I'm sorry," she excused herself, taking a final swig of the coffee Lisa had brought for her. She threw down a few knuts and smiled apologetically. "I need to run back downstairs and switch shifts. The pastries were excellent though. Tell Belby I said so." And with that, she walked out of the small cafe and made her way towards the stairs, smiling at the little interaction which had done more than it's share to brighten up her day.
