Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Lisa and Scarlet
Where: Hospital tea room
When: Monday evening
What: chatting?

Lisa frowned. It had been a particularly slow day and it was starting to look like it was being followed by an even slower night. The transition from morning shift to night shift was always one that she hated, but this was just terrible. She hadn't seen a customer in hours, which meant she wasn't going to be leaving with any money.

She was just trying to figure out what to do with all the extra time she seemed to have (read a book maybe?) when someone walked in. Lisa was so excited to finally have a customer that she hurried over without even really looking at them. It wasn't until after her usual greeting, "Hi, I'm Lisa, can I get you anything?" -- asking how customers were in a hospital was proven to be a bad idea so Lisa tried to stick to non-triggering questions -- that she realized that they were in fact another employee of Mungo's.

"Oh," was all she said before she smiled at them.

"Oh we do," Scarlet replied in her over-used comforting voice. She hated making the hospital seem safer than it was, especially when speaking with other employees. It wasn't that St. Mungo's was unsafe, it was just difficult to keep track of all the assassination attempts and stolen potions and healing salve that had been taking place on a regular basis ever since the War started. "He was just quite intelligent. The average thief keeps getting smarter and smarter, you know?"

Scarlet took another pastry, this one slightly blackberry in taste, and continued. "'Course, I'd've let him go just for being smart enough to get through the wards, but I'm not exactly in charge of making the rules, just enforcing them. Besides, who knows what he was going to use those potions for? I don't even know what they do. He'd have had to be looking for that potion." Scarlet didn't like what that meant. If a robbery was premeditated, that usually meant a second or third attempt to retrieve the desired item would be made. And considering how tight the security was around the closet the potion came out of, Scarlet was pretty sure whoever wanted it was quite determined.

"Nothing to worry about though," she stated airily, not quite sure if she was reassuring herself or Lisa.

Lisa nodded. She completely agreed with Scarlet, even if she wouldn't admit it, about letting him keep it. The second part just made her nervous. If someone was looking for that potion, it probably meant he would come back, right? Lisa shuddered at the thought. But when Scarlet told her not to worry, it was as if her nerves calmed down immediately.

"Sounds exciting, though." It was a side comment, one to keep the talk going. She hated it when people left her for better conversation and she was afraid Scarlet would do the same. "I mean," Lisa swallowed, "getting to run around and chase people all over the place. I bet it's fun sometimes."

Standing around a cafe waiting for people to come to you...that wasn't fun. Not in Lisa's standards anyways. But it was a job and if jobs were supposed to be fun, they'd be called play.

Scarlet smiled. "Oh it is quite fun," she assured Lisa as she bit into her pastry, "I prefer it to just about anything else in the world, actually, besides maybe talking to pretty birds like you." She stopped for a moment and blushed before bumbling through her words again, "Oh dear, didn't mean to say that. What I meant was, it can be quite fun. Only it isn't when people are doing illegal stuff and I can't stop them and then..." her voice dropped off for a moment as she tried to figure out how to phrase the next part.

"And then it's just awfully awful, because I never want to allow the illegal stuff to happen, but I'm not Merlin, really, or even Helga Hufflepuff. She was quite the healer, you know? Saved King Arthur's life more than once, she did." Her words stopped abruptly, like a broom crashing into a wall, and she smiled at Lisa again, trying to make the other girl forget the come on.

Lisa giggled and blushed, clearly flattered as the other girl stammered on. It was endearing, really, watching Scarlet try to cover up her words. She didn't mind of course. Hardly anyone called her pretty. If anything, Lisa appreciated the compliment and took it, gladly.

"Thanks," she said, taking a seat at the table, if only because her legs were tired of standing. "And I didn't know. I don't really know a lot about anything other than how to clean a table," she joked. "But I can see where you're coming from about wanting to stop all the crime. That's mighty ambitious, that is. I admire that."

The redhead startled. "Er, you're welcome," she replied. Normally, straight girls had an issue with her hitting on them. "I think you're much smarter than you think. And cleaning a table looks like it could be pretty hard." She looked up at Lisa and smiled. "And, yeah, the Hat wanted me in Slytherin for about three seconds before thinking better of it."

Scarlet looked at the clock behind Lisa's head and, upon realizing the time pushed back her chair. "I'm sorry," she excused herself, taking a final swig of the coffee Lisa had brought for her. She threw down a few knuts and smiled apologetically. "I need to run back downstairs and switch shifts. The pastries were excellent though. Tell Belby I said so." And with that, she walked out of the small cafe and made her way towards the stairs, smiling at the little interaction which had done more than it's share to brighten up her day.
