Who: Hal & Charlie
What: A hard day's night.
Where: The 90 Freeway, westbound.
When: Last night, sometime around 3 AM.
Warnings: Some language.
Hal shifted gears, feeling the semi-truck groan under him and then pick up a slow purring roar as he accelerated onto the freeway. Whatever he was hauling back there, it certainly wasn't light. "C'est lourd," he commented to his partner on the two-way in his ear. "Ah'm guessin' stolen car." He didn't particularly need Charlie to comment back, which was usually the nature of their relationship. Hal babbled, Charlie grunted or said something non-committal. Sometimes Charlie would comment in an extremely thick accent that made even Hal think of hot humid swamps and his mother's father, who laid pipe for most of his life.
Hal had decided long ago he was going to do a lot better than lay pipe. "Bet a dollar dis gonna go sideways," he continued, glancing nervously in his rearview. "Our employer ain't too popular with de other chop shops. I got a tail yet?" He didn't know which vehicle Charlie was driving; he would if he saw it, since he knew every vehicle they owned just like he knew this one. Being out of sight didn't mean out of reach, but this job still made Hal nervous and he would prefer to pocket a payment rather than end up in a flaming wreckage on the side of the road.
Then he saw it; a corvette, mustard yellow, coming up in the car pool. Probably about to cut him off, judging from the speed. "Shit." He turned down Elvis, who was singing about teddy bears.
