Who: Eli, Drake + Anyone who volunteered
What: EIT meeting
Where: The tennis courts at the Academy
When: Thursday night
Warnings: Party post, so should be anything. Post location in subject, and break off into as many threads as desired.
The entrance gate to The Academy was wide open, hanging on a hinge, and easy enough to drive a taxi through. Eli chose it for that reason, because there was easy, vehicular access to the edge of the tennis courts, along with enough space to add a feeling of security without requiring four walls and a roof.
The lights at the end of the old courts were still functional, and he was leaning back against the old supply desk, a voice amplifier in his hand and a stack of cards in front of him. The courts themselves were shadowed enough that anyone could be standing in them be offered privacy because of distance and minimal lighting. There were more lights up front, better visibility, but no one was forced to move there to listen.
He waited until he saw roughly the number of shapes he was expecting, waited for Drake to settle somewhere close, and then he spoke, voice carrying all the way to the back of the courts.
"Thank you for coming. We aren't vigilantes and we aren't masks. I want to make that clear from the very beginning. The masks provide a service to Seattle, as does conventional law enforcement, but the service EIT provides is different. We have several branches around the world, some of which are more organized than others. Ours, admittedly, is in its infancy. To put it bluntly, we're a bloody mess. But the goal remains the same - we pursue ability-based crime. Our peers in mundane law enforcement often have their hands tied when dealing with Creations. How do you capture someone who kills in dreams? How do you hold someone who can turn into water between your fingers? How do you find someone who cannot be seen? Even Creations within law enforcement can't address or hold these criminals properly, given that they must maintain the illusion of being members of humanity themselves. We have arrangements with police departments the world over, including the department here in Seattle, to pursue crimes they cannot. Unlike the masks and vigilantes, we do not prowl the streets at night and stop crime. We've intentionally put ourselves out there as an organization of harmless ghost hunters, men and women who chase shadows. It provides us with a bit of safety and cover, while letting our true purpose travel by word of mouth and hand-to-hand. We receive calls from law enforcement and civilians, and we investigate items we, ourselves, discover. Where the ability is being used without malicious intent, we help. When it is malicious, we capture the perpetrator. We are comprised of men and women who use our abilities to keep humanity and other Creations safe from Creations who would use their abilities for ill. For some of us, that means using healing abilities to tend to victims, for others it means using tracking abilities to find a criminal, or dream abilities to monitor crime there. We don't require you to wield a gun or throw a punch to join us, though a full half of our number is comprised of brawn, and we would not turn you away if that was your skill-set. At present, we have no facility to hold criminals, and we have no true headquarters in Seattle, but that will be changing. In the wake of the Reavers incident, and the escalating problem of the Night Terror, we hardly have a choice. We're working on a method for communication that is easier than forums or cellphones, but it is not in place yet. I'll answer any questions anyone might have, and I recommend discussion amongst yourselves. My associate and I will be wandering around. Please stop us, if you wish. If, once we've parted, you're interested, take one of the cards or contact us on the forums." |
