Who: Dot and Okoye
What: Violating every horror movie stereotype ever - Okoye makes it back to the Bathos to see Dot
Where: Bathos 702
When: Friday, around 1 pm
Warnings: Unspoken relief and stale chips
Though Okoye often considered himself married to his work, this was getting ridiculous. He didn't mind spending time at the office, but when his time was spent playing Angry Birds and fighting with Sommers for the right to their shared bathroom, he'd much rather be taking some time off. All in all there were twenty-three of them trapped at GlassPR, the overachievers that had stayed late or the janitorial staff that worked nights. Lucky to have an office on the seventh floor, Okoye holed up in his hovel fairly easily, with the others taking vacant offices on the same floor. There were several cafes in the building that they raided on Thursday to stay alive - and surprisingly, most of them left at least a few dollars at the till out of guilt - and upper-floor windows to use as makeshift watchtowers. Though going stir-crazy was a real concern, they unanimously decided not to move until the coast looked clear.
On Friday, it looked pretty damn clear.
The streets were relatively barren, and by ten o'clock in the morning, it looked almost safe. Okoye was skeptical, but he had reasons to return home. So all twenty-three of them organized into groups based on the location of their homes, hoping to take advantage of safety in numbers for as long as possible. They staggered their exits to avoid drawing attention to themselves, with Okoye's group of six leaving first.
Walking the streets with a broken table leg in one hand and his briefcase in the other was a very strange experience. He felt like a caveman scouting for food, though he knew that wasn't the case. In the back of his mind, he hoped that Dot's stash of horrible junk food hadn't run out or clogged her arteries by the time he arrived. If he'd been thinking, he'd have packed a sandwich or two from the cafe, but there was something about a zombie apocalypse that changed the way your brain put thoughts together.
One by one, people splintered off the group until Okoye was left to make the final two blocks of his journey alone. He was quiet and careful, always looking over his shoulder, and luckily he didn't run into any of those damn monsters. It was a success. He wasn't sure if it was dumb luck or good timing, but he wasn't going to be picky.
He entered the Bathos lobby and closed the door behind him, rushing up the stairs and passing his floor without a second thought. Seventh floor first. Had to check on Dot. As an only child, Okoye had never understood what it was like to have a sibling. In the years since coming to humanity, he had come to realize that Dot was the closest he was going to get. Stopping at unit 702, he knocked on it heavily, out of breath and sweating. Luckily he had a change of clothes at the office, though that meant his current attire was a day old. He imagined she wouldn't mind terribly.
"Dottie!" he called at the door. "It's Okoye, open up!"
