Who: Sydney & Matt
What: Ex-spouses meet for the first time in centuries. WITH NO INHIBITIONS HOBOY
Where: Coffeeshop
When: 10 am, backdated to Friday morning
Warnings: Possibly cussing?

Sydney had awoken this morning with little help from her alarm clock, which was unusual. She also woke up with a strange knot in her stomach--she couldn't tell if it was from nervousness, or hunger, or excitement, or guilt. Maybe a combination of all three. Rolling out of bed, she'd spent over an hour trying to decide what to wear before hurriedly slapping some cream cheese on a bagel and eating it. She made some fresh-squeezed orange juice, drinking some and leaving the rest in a pitcher with a note for Will. Her hands brushed against the stair railing as she left, heels clicking as she rushed to her car.

She was ten minutes early when she got to the coffee shop, which was good, because approaching him once he'd already sat down would remind her too much of her reunion with Roger. She ordered a coffee from the server at the front (and blushed profusely when she found herself randomly commenting on his attractiveness) and found a comfortable seat, away from most of the humans who were reading the news or going about getting their morning coffee. At least then they'd be able to talk without interruption. Plus, being overheard by a human when discussing their centuries of history might be a bit...awkward. Or strange.

She sat for a minute before remembering that they lived in the same apartment complex. "Fuck!" she cussed softly under her breath. "I should've offered him a ride." Though, once she thought about it, that might have felt silly...meeting him in the apartment complex just to drive all the way to a coffeeshop to talk. But because for some strange reason she was feeling impulsive today, she pulled out her cell phone and texted him.

I'm at the coffeeshop. Sorry. Forgot we were in
the same complex. Should've offered you a ride.

She took him at face value if only because, no matter how many years you lived, there were some things you didn't understand unless you'd been in that place before yourself. Sydney had never been faced with a duality in her own morals--a history conflicting with her present--so it was unlikely she'd ever truly grasp that the person you once are never leaves you, no matter how hard you try. So a small smile curved on her face, and she believed him: because she trusted him, and probably would continue to until he gave her reason not to.

She laughed a little at the thought of the girl attacking him. "This might be sort of weird, but I feel like the two of us might like each other, if we'd ever gotten to know each other. She seems like a spitfire." Then, giving him a highly amused look, she added, "You seem to only meet girls intent on catching or attacking you...you should change that, you know. It can't be healthy."

Bringing the conversation back to the Thanksgiving event, she clapped her hands together slightly. "We should go together! It says you can only come as couples, and, well. I've only been here about a month, and it'd be nice to go with someone I know well." She smiled at him--a charming, you-know-you-want-to-say-yes sort of smile.

"Oh, I've tried, but they just aren't as interesting," he countered, somehow managing a straight face. "None of that...danger thrown in to spice things up a bit. You've spoiled me."

"We...could," he admitted to her request, sounding slightly uncertain. Not that he was objecting, he just hadn't expected the suggestion to come from her. "I would think Thanksgiving is one of those things that's best with people you actually know, yes."

Sydney laughed at that again, a brow quirking up in interest at his words. "Spoiled you, hmm?" she asked, laughter still present in her voice. "Can't say I'm sorry about that, though I can't help the fact that I'm so terribly interesting." She leaned in a little, almost conspiratorially, and said, "We'll be fun about it--analyze all the high-society types there and dance a bit. I'm sure it'll be entertaining."

She looked down. Somewhere between waiting for Matt to arrive and sipping while conversing with him, she'd finished her coffee. "I'm going to grab another one, did you want one?" she asked, pointing down to her empty cup and already shifting in her chair to stand up. Turning slightly, she pushed her chair in and then looked towards the counter, which she'd been facing away from--

--and directly over a plant and into the face of a certain brunette that they'd just been discussing. She whipped back around, and this time her brows were furrowed. "You're joking, right?" she asked, stepping aside and gesturing towards her. "I thought you guys weren't partners anymore?"

"What...?" He glanced towards where she was looking, and narrowed his eyes when he realised, although he didn't move from his seat, remaining infuriatingly calm. "We're not. I told you. She tried to attack me, if you don't remember, I really doubt we would be particularly friendly were that the case." Another lie, although this one more true than the last; their relationship had been...unconventional, to say the least, one based upon primal urges and a battle for dominance rather than anything particularly warm or fuzzy, so at the time it hadn't been out of the ordinary for violence to be a part of things, but that wasn't the case these days. "I can honestly say I have no idea why she's here, so you can stop looking at me like that."

It was strange. She'd been quite willing to believe him just a few moments ago, but today it was like...it was like her emotions were on hyper-drive or something, and this was just way too weird for her to brush off. How was it possible that the last time she'd seen him, Angela had been around, and this time she was still there, lurking behind a fucking plant of all things?

Her face showed her conflicted emotions perfectly--lack of inhibitions seemed to mess with her ability to cloud them. "Right. So she just happens to be sitting directly behind me, out of sight, at the exact coffee shop we're sitting in the first day we meet in the human world after centuries of not seeing each other." The more she put it into words, the less sense it made to her, and the more irritated she seemed to get. "Oh, and wait, there's more--the last time we saw each other, she was there too!"

She gave him a look--a mix of do I look like I'm an idiot? and I can't believe I fucking fell for that. "Jesus," she muttered under her breath. "Boy, do I feel dumb now."

"There are such things as coincidence, you know," Matt countered, rising from his chair because it just felt so absurd to be arguing from lower than her. He was still straining to be calm and collected, to be the rational one because really there was nothing going on at all. She was overreacting, seeing patterns where there weren't any, and yes it might have looked suspect but since when had things been simple between the three of them?

"I don't know why she's here, for all I know she wanted coffee too; it's a city, you're going to see people. It's unavoidable." He was sharp with her, perhaps more so than was really necessary, but she was being unreasonable, he couldn't be expected to just lay down and take this.

"This is too many coincidences, Matt," she said, tilting her head up as he stood--he was taller than her, after all--and crossing her arms. She could see from the way his face tightened that he was trying not to lose his temper, but she couldn't tell if this was a sign of guilt or an absolution. And god help her if she wasn't feeling a bit more irritated too, and she couldn't stop herself from rising to the challenge that she saw in his eyes.

"I didn't even know she was in the human world until right this second," she replied back, just as sharply, eyes narrowing slightly. That part was dead true--she hadn't even processed the significance of seeing Angela in this coffee shop until she'd said it just now.

"I've been here for two months and I haven't seen her at all, and now, the one day I finally meet up with you, I see her too?" She pursed her lips. "Forgive me if that's a little too far of a leap of faith for me to take." She drew in a breath, understanding what her words meant. "You might not have gone back to all your old habits, Matt," she said stonily, "But that doesn't mean you've left that part of your life behind, and that doesn't change the fact that you just lied to me about it. What was the point of lying, anyways? Just to see if I would fall for it?"

There was a tinge of hurt in her expression now, a vulnerability that came uncharacteristically quickly today. Perhaps another day this might not have wounded her so much, but this morning, it seemed like it was so significant a depiction of betrayal.

"When did I lie?" he snapped, taking a step towards her, clearly only getting more irritated the more she spoke and evidently oblivious to the other patrons growing uneasy by their argument. "I said we aren't partners again, and I'm fairly certain I actually recall telling you I ran into her since I've been here. Do you see me here with her? Do you see me going to talk to her? No, I'm not. Because I'm here with you right now, and anything I had with her is firmly in the past. Or did I not make that clear enough the last time we had this conversation?"

It was a coincidence. They did happen from time to time, why couldn't she see that? Yes, an extremely ill-timed one, but that was often how they worked. Why did she need to keep bringing this up, he'd thought they'd gotten past it; they'd been having a nice, calm, quiet, pleasant conversation, and then....this.

People were staring outright at them now, some intrigued by this public show of drama, others irritated to be distracted from their papers or their work. Sydney could feel their eyes on her, and she quickly came to the decision that she wanted to be anywhere but here right now. Anywhere. She needed to be somewhere that she wouldn't feel like saying the words 'the human world' would make someone pull out a cell phone and post their conversation on the internet.

"I don't know what game you're playing, Matt," she said, softly now, leaning in towards him so he'd hear her but no one around them could. "And I want to believe you--" this much was true, even though it didn't seem it at this particular moment, "--but this...you can't blame me for thinking this is suspicious, because it is." Her brows her furrowed, irritated by his anger, confused by her own irritation, and angered by her own confusion.

She let out a huff of air. "I--" A small shake of her head, and she picked up her purse. "Fine. Whatever you say," she said, though she obviously still didn't believe him. "I'm just going to head out now." And with that, she swung the purse over her shoulder and headed towards the door.

He caught her wrist before she could get far, keeping her from escaping, because he wasn't about to let this go as it was. "Don't walk away from me, Sydney. You ran off the last time, it's not going to be so easy this time. We can have a civilised conversation like normal people, can't we? I'm not playing any game, and if you opened your eyes for just a moment instead of just reacting like some overzealous Inquisitioner you would see that. If you want to believe me, then for once in your life just listen." He bristled in contained anger, words all harsh edges and carefully bridled irritation, nearly infinite patience finally beginning to run out for a reason he couldn't quite put words to.

She felt his fingers close around her wrist as she left, tugging her backwards and towards him again. She felt a small flutter of something--guilt, perhaps, or "Overzealous Inquisitioner?" she asked, eyebrows raising in disbelief. "You're comparing me to someone from the Inquisition? Seriously?" Another angry huff. "I can't even, you--"

She broke herself off, very aware now that he'd been speaking quite loudly for a quiet little coffeeshop, and now the barista was looking at them like she might have to ask them to leave. Gritting her teeth, she pressed her free hand to the bridge of her nose. "Fine. Fine, you get your moment to speak to the Inquisitor." The last word was spoken with derision--she'd been there during the Spanish Inquisition, and the comparison did not help her mood.

"But not here." She pulled her hand back, free from his grasp, and wrapped her fingers around the strap of her bag. "Maybe...somewhere a little more private." If they were going to get into their history, it was probably better not to do it around a group of clueless humans. And probably better not around the cause of the argument.

A moment passed, one that seemed far longer than it really was, during which he continued to fix her with a penetrating glare before finally letting out a huff of agreement. "Fine. Good." He waved a hand out past her, unable to keep the snide tone out of his voice, and at this point mostly uncaring about doing so anyway. "Lead on, then."

It was probably for the best that they dealt with this out of earshot of the general population anyway, he figured; no telling what would end up getting brought up, and there was no need to let things slip out where just anyone could hear them. Better to keep it between them, where it belonged.

She waited for that moment, hoping this wasn't about to escalate to a scene even moreso than it already was in the middle of the coffeeshop. Her shoulders relaxed subtly as he agreed, and with pursed lips (she definitely noticed that tone of his), she turned and stalked out of the front door, ignoring the people that tried to subtly watch them walk out. Stupid humans. This was probably the drama highlight of their days, she thought to herself, irritation making her cynical and snappy.

She walked quickly, heels clipping against the ground as she crossed the street to the parking lot on the opposite corner. The parking garage was deserted, luckily, and they reached her car in the basement floor relatively quickly. She turned around, arms crossed, still irritated. "Okay. So please, inform the inquisitor of what she's missing here." Yep, still pissed about that comparison.

He seethed in silence the entire trip through the car park and down to her car, saying nothing, but his anger and frustration at her were almost palpable. Once they arrived he stopped short, weighing his words before releasing them.

"Well if you were truly an Inquisitor it wouldn't make any difference what I say because you'll have already made your mind up," he replied pointedly, almost looming over her now. "But what you're missing is that you keep joining everything together as if it's all related. Some huge conspiracy of the universe. Sometimes things that look related aren't. And if you got your head out of your narrow little world-view every now and again, you would see that."

He had a point with the comment about the inquisitors, and she readied herself for openness, acceptance, perhaps even a filter on her mouth so she didn't make things worse. Leaning against the door of her car, she watched him evenly. But as he spoke, her mouth dropped open again and she leaned in towards him, brows furrowing.

"My narrow little world-view?" she asked. "I don't know if you've noticed who you're talking about here--we are connected, the three of us, for centuries now, and that's just the unavoidable truth!" Her lips pressed together for a moment, her rage simmering. "And you're one to talk about narrow world views, Matt," she said through gritted teeth. "I can't even believe you're lecturing me about--" she cut herself off with a little huff, leaning into him and practically on her tiptoes as she tried to make up for what he had in advantage in height. "You've let yourself grow so detached from the world around you that you live in a bubble all your own!"

"But at least I see it for what it is," he hissed, taking another step closer, "instead of deciding to see it only through those rose-tinted glasses of yours. I may choose not to get involved, but don't mistake that for ignorance."

He saw enough. He knew the way the world worked, the turns of the screws, how everything fit. It was predictable and rarely changed, that's why he distanced himself from it. Not because he had a narrow view but because it didn't matter. It would all come around again in the end. "And anyway. Your way's that much better? At least with mine I'm never disappointed. As for us all being connected...I never said we weren't. But it's a big world, we're bound to run into each other in circumstances that don't have anything to do with it! Is it truly that difficult for you to believe it just happened and there wasn't anything more behind it than that?"

"It's not a form of ignorance!" she spat, brows furrowed with consternation. "It's a way of interpreting the lives of humans. I choose to see the benefits that their otherwise strange and possibly negative traits encompass--you have no faith in them at all." She placed her hands on her hips and jutted out her chin in quite the stubborn manner.

She almost felt like stomping her foot, she felt so frustrated--and deep underneath that, a little confused. This conversation had suddenly sprung out of nowhere, and she felt like they were talking in circles. She looked back up at him. "Just because things don't turn out the way I'd always like them to is no reason to abandon my sense of optimism for the human race. I mean, Christ, Matt, I--" she broke off, and suddenly something like impulse seized her and she reached out and pulled at the collar of his shirt, leaning up and meeting his lips in a none-too-chaste kiss, fingers reaching up to tangle in his hair.

Oh god. What the fuck was she doing? screamed a voice in the back of her mind.

An argument had begun to form in his mind, something along the lines of few humans having enough positive traits to make interpreting them worthwhile, how it wasn't that he didn't have any optimism so much as that the cycles of time made it pointless, but then there was the clutch of fingers and the press of curves, the demand of lips that had been absent for...a rather long time, and he started to have a little trouble focusing on the conversation.

He responded in kind for a few moments, more than he would have rationally liked but far too few for the rest, pinning her against the car door but not particularly gentle about it since he was still angry, damn it, before pulling back slightly. He fixed her with a scowl, his tone accusatory. "And now you're cheating? I thought we were having an argument."
