[public]
[After giving the police a few days to scramble around looking for evidence.]

I feel that I have made my message clear. The system in this city is ineffective, and the masks are not willing to go far enough in administering true justice. I have no interest in innocents, and I have done everything within my power to inflict no collateral damage at all. All I am interested in is the wicked in this world, and where they are presented to me, I will strike them down. I do not ask that everyone does the same. I only ask to be left to my work.

No. I'm saying our kids will have to deal with the repercussions of this chaos you're causing. Don't twist my fucking words, Fawkes.

And I say that, while unfortunate, a child is not reason enough to allow someone to go on to harm others.

I'm talking about the future. Quit intentionally misunderstanding me because you know I have a kid. I'm talking about the martial law you're bringing to this city that every kid walking around right now is going to be brought up in.

I was doing no such thing. I was merely stating a fact.

You are very optimistic about my life expectancy.

All I want is to clean up this city as much as I can, and to make clear that none of us need live in fear simply because our justice system is broken. I see no reason to fear that.

I'm talking about what you're doing now. You're not cleaning things up. You're creating a whole generations of kids like you. Kids who will grow up to kill and want fucking vengeance because of what you did.

My previous question stands. What, then, would you have me do? Would they not want revenge even if their mothers and fathers only were carted off to jail? Would they not always feel the betrayal of a parent who did evil deeds?

That's the point. You can't know what would happen. You're playing God, and that's never a good idea. And we already have enough death in this city without you adding to it. Two wrongs don't make a right. And whoever you lost? They wouldn't want you doing this.

You misunderstand me. I was not wondering - it is a fact that they would feel the same regardless of what I did. Call what I am doing what you will, but I see little difference between deciding that you have a right to put a man on the stand for murder by a collection of evidence and allowing him to run through an ineffective justice system to offend again, and simply collecting the evidence until there is enough to prove guilt beyond doubt and preventing him from ever hurting anyone else. Both assume that others have the right to pass judgement on their fellow man. Both assume that punishment should be dealt for acts that go beyond the pale of human morality. One is simply effective at preventing future crimes where the other is not.
