In the year 2016, Monroe found and tried to open a Hellmouth because she was misled to believe that it would help to destroy all of the supernaturals. Instead it backfired and opened a portal in time back to just after the death of the First Slayer. That portal began pulling people from all different dimensions through and trapping them in the time period. Within the first year four separate colonies had formed. First there was the Sunnydale colony led by Violet, then there was the Beacon colony led by Scott McCall, next was the Purest colony led by Monroe and finally the New Orleans colony led by Klaus Mikaelson.

Three of the colonies all have trade routes with one another and share ideas and advancements. By the second year Willow Rosenberg and Lydia Martin joined forces to create the technopage web. Everyone was given a tablet that was powered by a combination of magic and science, and they could use these tablets to communicate with one another.
