A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY
Twenty years ago, the Republic fell at the hands of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. The Jedi were killed and a near dictatorship began. It was a dark time, one of fear and danger for all in the galaxy. There was a spark of hope though, a Rebellion was formed at the hands of Mon Mothma and Admiral Ackbar, two powerful people in the former Republic.
Twenty years on, there was no sign of winning. The rebellion had the occasional win against the Empire, some large and some small but there was no hope for them.
That was until they discovered the plans for the Death Star.
Princess Leia of Alderaan, a leading member of the Rebellion due to her political ifluence, managed to get the plans away in her astromech droid, R2-D2, before she was captured and brought to the Death Star. Grand Moff Tarkin along with Darth Vader were determined to retrieve the location of the Rebel's base from her by threatening her homeworld. While she gave up the location of Dantooine, the Empire wasn't impressed and Tarkin instructed the Death Star to go ahead and destroy Aldeeraan.
Except it didn't work.
No one knows what went wrong but instead of destroying Aldeeraan it ripped a hole in the space time continuum. The first that they knew was when someone from a different galaxy and a different time arrived. Since then, hundreds have arrived and more are arriving every day.
While both the Rebellion and the Naboo Government, who agreed to house the refugees, are trying their hardest to keep things quiet it is incredibly hard for something this size to stay secret for a long time.
