Deacon's [secret birthday] bash - OTA
Charlie dearly loved parties but todays seemed likely to be one of the most strenuous. The sun shone brightly, the lake water seemed fairly clear, reflecting the blue of the sky and the equipment was in good condition.

Kayaks were stacked to one side for the traditonalists, there were brightly coloured jetskis like little bugs. A deck had a couple of larger craft moored alongside for waterskiing and there were pedalos and rowing boats and - the thing he had been keeping an eye on since he had arrived - several enormous plasic 'hamster balls' floating on the surface of the water.

"I'm just got to have a go in one of those," he thought as he waited for the guests, and secret guest of honour, to arrive.

Ricky had brought a huge inflatable globe, large enough to serve as a bona fide planet for very small insects; a few freshly burned CDs of unpublished music, and a well-filled tin of mary jane, safely hidden in his glove compartment.

He was trying to get the unwieldy folded-up plastic husk, which currently showed only Cuba to indicate there was anything geographical on it, and Cindy's wheelchair, out of the bus at the same time, while Cindy leaned against the side of the bus and mocked.

"Hey," Charlie said, rushing to help. "What? No Andras? Let me take that."

He grabbed the wheelchair and popped it open with a practiced gesture and clipped the safeties into place. "There," he said and grinned at Cindy. He had something for her in his van - brownies, special ones, in case she wanted to join in the fun.

"Yes Andras!" Andras said, crawling out from behind the big folded-up globe. "The back seat door is broken from the inside."

He proceeded to drag the deflated planet from the bus.

Cindy sat in her wheelchair and smiled thanks at Charlie.

Ricky shrugged, apologetic. "The bus is a bit peculiar. Sorry 'bout that."

"Hey, there," Charlie said to Andras. "Yeah my van has its moments," he added, helping with the mass of slippy plastic. "Ricky - what is this? Cindy, I brought something for you. I'll fetch it just now. They guys are all down at the changing rooms getting into wet suits and stuff. Or not. Doubt D will bother."

"It'll be good to get into the water," Cindy said. "Especially if you've got a bit where the sun has warmed it. And thanks, Charlie!"

Yes, a special brownie would be appreciated. Cindy had stopped caring what it was that was really in them. Once in a while, she could cheat fate with them -- and the next Sunday, she'd light a candle to Saint Panteleimon, perhaps to apologise, perhaps to thank the saint of healing for the existence of that illicit help.

"It's our planet!" Ricky said, proudly, oblivious to the exchange.

"Really?" Charlie eyed it with disquiet. "Have you got a footpump? Because I'm not sure we've got enough breath to blow that up even between all of us."

"I am so not making a blow-job joke at this point," Ricky said, grinning as cheerfully as if he just had had one.

"I have even better -- I have a little electric pump that connects to the cigarette lighter in my car. It goes all whoooooosh for a bit, and then we get a planet!"

"Fantastic," Charlie said. "Er - can I leave you to it. Just need to chat to Cindy a bit?" He grinned at her feeling for his car keys.

"Ah, I think he's found Scruffy," Charlie said, shading his eyes. "Yes, one has a stick, the other hasn't, therefore they chase each other." He opened his van and reach under his seat and took out a small tupperware box. "Um," he said, and placed it on Cindy's lap. No words needed to be said as far as he was concerned.

Cindy smiled, opened it, and ate one, savouring every bit.

She thought she was feeling better already - but that couldn't be. Or maybe her body by now associated imminent pain relief with the taste.

Charlie grinned at her and left her to eat the brownies in peace and ran down to the edge of the water and called both dogs then ran away as they pelted out and began to shake.

"Whoa, Scruffy," Nick called, his massive body now encased in black rubber, and he laughed as the sopping wet black poddle pounced at him.

A moment later, the entire earth came rolling down the shore, followed by Andras and Ricky, laughing their heads of.

"Careful with the Himalayans!" Andras called out.

Nick and Charlie skipped out of the way and cheered as it hit the water, then Charlie went back to Cindy and said, "The ground's a bit rough by the shore, so I'll come with you if I may?"

Not exactly an offer of a push, but it was there if she wanted to interpret it that way.

"Would you bring the chair along?" Cindy said, getting up to walk, carefully, down towards the water.

Halfway, she turned again to smile at Charlie. "My life is always worth living, even on bad days; that's the lot the good lord has given me to test me. But this makes it lots more fun. I'd rather not get used to it -- but on days like these, why not?"

"Days like these," Charlie said. "I've got a song called that." Then a laugh and a flash of golden skin caught his eye and he sighed and pointed to Deacon in his trunks at the end of the deck talking to Katinka.

"Oh yes, good days," he agreed.

Axminster and Scruffy danced to meet her, both hanging onto the same stick.

"C'mere, you," Nick said, trying to grab scruffy but the poodle leaped away, tail wagging. "Damn," Nick said.

Charlie shot a look of gratitude at Nick and Cindy, "Excuse me," he said, "but I seriously need to schmoop at my boyfriend," and shot away.

Nick chuckled and said, "You got your swimmers under those, Cindy? Or do you need to change?"

Nick was trundling the chair along beside her and smiled when he spotted a familiar tupperware box. He tucked it out of sight in one of the pockets and parked the chair close to the water.

"Wherever you're ready then," he said. "Grounds a bit rough but the gravel isn't too bad on bare feet.I can give you an arm if you like."
