"Fountain of Youth"
Astronomy has been receiving a lot of attention recently -- and rightly so, with the Curiosity rover and the passing of Neil Armstrong -- but there are plenty of exciting things happening in the biology world as well.
Scientists at John Hopkins University have found a way to regress adult blood cells back into a state equivalent to the blood of a "6-day-old embryo." These blood cells can then be transformed into embryonic stem cells, which can then be used in stem cell therapy. If this research turns out to be successful, this new method will be the answer to the needless controversy of using stem cells in medicine, as well as a viable alternative to human embryos and viral reprogramming.
So the excitement is that we may be able to "cure the incurable," from eradicating cancer to helping those with spinal injuries. As for a "fountain of youth," I'm not that optimistic. Gods and goddesses of death know better than that.
The research findings can be found in the August issue of the Public Library of Science. Link to another article about the news can be found here.
Other than that, the Wellness Center wants to pass along a reminder for MNU students to make sure their medical records are up to date. Appointments for vaccines can be made at the center or the hospital.
