I'd like to turn to a type of song that people like myself find ourselves subjected to with increasing frequency as time goes on, and that is the college alma mater. You'll find yourself at a reunion of grads, and old undergrads, and eh... somebody will start croaking out one of these things and everyone will gradually join in -- each in his own key, of course -- until the place is just soggy with nostalgia. Well, a typical such song might be called Bright College Days, and might go like this. Bright college days, O carefree days that fly, To thee we sing with our glasses raised on high. Let's drink a toast as each of us recalls Ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls. Turn on the spigot, pour the beer and swig it, and gaudeamus igit-ur. Here's to parties we tossed, To the games that we lost, We shall claim that we won them some day. To the girls young and sweet, To the spacious back seat of our beat up Chevrolet.

In which Halphas is inebriated and full of thoughts [27 Aug 2012|01:03am]
I love reading when staff and professors decide to tell us in that calling-out-without-using-names way that students are lazy, unimaginative, weak, and stupid as fuck. Hey, you're the educators. Maybe if you actually tried educating?

Hi, all. I'm Paul, if you've never bumped into me before.

And if you have bumped into me, I should probably apologize profusely. Bumping into me can be slightly more unpleasant than bumping into other people, because of reasons.

Those of you of age may remember me as 'that nice man what hands me drinks until I'm unconscious', and if you're not of age, I've probably chased a few of you away. State law and all that. Speaking of which, I hope Colorado doesn't decide to get a stick up it's ass and start banning Four Loko.

Because I've recently discovered the concoction that is a Four Loko float. Fucking magical, really. Though more than one almost guarantees spending quite a lot of time hugging the toilet.

Also, William, dear, I've taken the liberty of doing a bit of re-stocking to the fridge if you know what I mean. I'd filter, but fuck it.

It's Shax. ♥ I know I haven't been obvious, but no time like the present to get to know one another.

Really wishing I could get into the office at the Sports Center to find out who closed last night, since they've got a real funny sense of humour. Seems like someone switched all the music stations to play boy band shit, and then stuck the remote where I can't reach it even when I stand on a fucking chair. Never had these issues as a jötunn... I even tried throwing shit at the remote to get it, but that only made it harder to reach.

So yeah, sorry to anyone looking to work out today, the music selection fucking blows. Trying to fix it, but might need some help from a taller friend. Not the best way to start my day, but at least thanks to Jon getting me addicted to Tumblr I can read The Drunken Moogle to distract myself. Lots of interesting stuff on that blog.

Did your girly tell you I offered to help train her?

You two mind if I crash at your place for a bit? Don't wanna stay in the woods, don't wanna go home. I'll bring supplies, and I promise not to get in the way. Just don't wanna be alone, and don't want Reeve to see me like this.

How's it going?

"Fountain of Youth" [27 Aug 2012|12:07pm]
Astronomy has been receiving a lot of attention recently -- and rightly so, with the Curiosity rover and the passing of Neil Armstrong -- but there are plenty of exciting things happening in the biology world as well.

Scientists at John Hopkins University have found a way to regress adult blood cells back into a state equivalent to the blood of a "6-day-old embryo." These blood cells can then be transformed into embryonic stem cells, which can then be used in stem cell therapy. If this research turns out to be successful, this new method will be the answer to the needless controversy of using stem cells in medicine, as well as a viable alternative to human embryos and viral reprogramming.

So the excitement is that we may be able to "cure the incurable," from eradicating cancer to helping those with spinal injuries. As for a "fountain of youth," I'm not that optimistic. Gods and goddesses of death know better than that.

The research findings can be found in the August issue of the Public Library of Science. Link to another article about the news can be found here.

Other than that, the Wellness Center wants to pass along a reminder for MNU students to make sure their medical records are up to date. Appointments for vaccines can be made at the center or the hospital.

So. I was drunk last night.

I had genuine concerns, but. Not the best way to go about it.

Sorry.

Yeah, I'm not saying that.

I don't think I have words.
