I'd like to turn to a type of song that people like myself find ourselves subjected to with increasing frequency as time goes on, and that is the college alma mater. You'll find yourself at a reunion of grads, and old undergrads, and eh... somebody will start croaking out one of these things and everyone will gradually join in -- each in his own key, of course -- until the place is just soggy with nostalgia. Well, a typical such song might be called Bright College Days, and might go like this. Bright college days, O carefree days that fly, To thee we sing with our glasses raised on high. Let's drink a toast as each of us recalls Ivy-covered professors in ivy-covered halls. Turn on the spigot, pour the beer and swig it, and gaudeamus igit-ur. Here's to parties we tossed, To the games that we lost, We shall claim that we won them some day. To the girls young and sweet, To the spacious back seat of our beat up Chevrolet.

Geez, so much hate on Valentine's Day. It's just sort of another day for me. Kind of nice to see people cheerful and all, but hey!, nothing wrong with sticking it alone either.

And some useful information for everyone:
Originally, the date was used to celebrate Juno (or Hera, as some of you might know her) and the whole pairing ceremony that went with it often ended up being a sort of matchmaking event. Apparently, the young folks used to put their names in a jar and pull it out to partner up for the festival. And then they would fall in love and get married!

(My feeling on marriage is for another post.)

Well, the Roman Emperor Claudius decided to ban marriages, because it turns out that men didn't want to fight in his crappy campaigns for their family's sake. Makes sense. And to get rid of the problem, you get rid of what precedes it! I think it was sort of a clever move, except for this Saint Valentine guy goes and marries all these couples in secret. So, naturally, Claudius decides to off with his head.

So really, this day is an adaptation of a pagan holiday and stems from a nice guy who ended up getting his head cut off on the same day.
And now you know!

Right. An introduction. An interesting fact about me: I hate that ice-breaking game professors are so fond of, the one where you have to give an interesting fact about yourself, but I enjoy making my students play it. Guilty pleasure.

If you've had me as a Biology T.A. and I don't remember you, I'm sorry. It's very hard to lecture and connect at the same time. There's a reason my focus is research... Again, I'm so sorry. It can hurt, being forgotten.

I have a lot of pets? I do, no question about it, but I'm not sure anyone wants to hear me rattle on about them.

We've all got one of those... funny pasts, don't we? I'd rather not talk about mine. It's, well, it's Biblical, which should tell you it's a 10:1 ratio of misery to impressiveness. The rest of you, you're quite amazing... Less sex might be good for you, though.

My name is Kim. Almost forgot that.

Seeing all this debate over Valentines Day makes me feel in the minority, though I have no shame in admitting that I like the holiday. Having a designated day where people celebrate love makes me happy, as does the similar Japanese tradition of women giving men gifts in March for White Day.

Really, what's so bad about wanting flowers, to get dressed pretty, and to feel like someone cares, even if it's just because someone once decided it would be nice? I may not have a boyfriend or husband, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the day.

Death is a horrible thing. Nobody wants to die, even if they believe that there might be something better on the other side. Still, I see stories about people who test the limits, and well...

possibly nsfw, written depictions of death, and written depictions of human stupidity )

Valentine's Day is coming up & I was thinking maybe we could do a Secret Valentine. You know, if anyone's interested. Because I know some people end up with no Valentine & the day is not fun for them. If you're interested, I'll facilitate!

Shark jumping.

Valentines day is nothing special and is not an occasion for cake or candles and if I see one ribbon I will not be happy.

That was a hint.
