Originally, the date was used to celebrate Juno (or Hera, as some of you might know her) and the whole pairing ceremony that went with it often ended up being a sort of matchmaking event. Apparently, the young folks used to put their names in a jar and pull it out to partner up for the festival. And then they would fall in love and get married! And now you know!
(My feeling on marriage is for another post.)
Well, the Roman Emperor Claudius decided to ban marriages, because it turns out that men didn't want to fight in his crappy campaigns for their family's sake. Makes sense. And to get rid of the problem, you get rid of what precedes it! I think it was sort of a clever move, except for this Saint Valentine guy goes and marries all these couples in secret. So, naturally, Claudius decides to off with his head.
So really, this day is an adaptation of a pagan holiday and stems from a nice guy who ended up getting his head cut off on the same day.
