From the way he's dodged some questions I'm gonna guess the necessity was on our side, not his. ~~He's giving off real bad vibes here, Sare.~~ When it comes to people stealing resources after a disaster I'm pretty inclined to be sympathetic honestly, after Katrina, but I can imagine it could get pretty bad if it was people who had superpowers or leftover Chitauri tech or something. Lord knows Steve and I were still finding pieces of that shit when these portals started happening so there's got to be more out there still. I don't know, he sounds like he's more about the letter of the law than thinking about what's actually right and we know where I fall on that.

See I knew this question would come up eventually, and yet I still hadn't completely figured out the answer.

I guess, the stuff I already know is pretty bad. And I know you lot are still all fine since you've shown up here. Outside of that... I think if I can handle knowing I was gone for five years and Natasha's gone for real, I can handle the rest of it. If other people are turning up from there as well it's probably better I know.

Alright. Honestly kinda hoped I'd be able to keep this to myself, and the boys were awful good at not telling you.

When I first got here, either you or Bucky asked if I'd seen Steve recently and I said I hadn't. I think it was Bucky, and he said it was wired. The reason I hadn't seen Steve after everyone came back is Steve retired. He went to put the stones back in time and stayed.

You told me you saw him one more time after that, you and Bucky both. When he was an old man and he passed the Shield on to you.

I don't know all the details. And it might not even happen now. No Thanos means... well, who knows. But from what you told me, in order to fix everything the remaining Avengers went back in time. They pulled the Stones from the timeline, used em and then someone had to put them back. Steve volunteered.

I don't know anything other than that. And I ain't told him or Bucky any of this either. It's not just you this is about because getting you take the Shield wasn't a smooth road either. And that's where Walker comes in.

Bad. All that stuff he was saying about the GRC, it's one side of the story. Not saying I agree with what Carly and her people were doing, I didn't, but people were suffering and no one was doing anything about it.

And Walker he... he went off the deep end when his partner was killed. And the whole world was watching as he did it.

He said he isn't that person, and I want to believe it, but we all been through trauma. Just because it might not happen here don't mean it wasn't real.

I was getting the feeling like there was more to it. Whatever the media thinks, people band together in the bad times, try to help each other. We've seen that. I saw it in Afghanistan. Half the world disappearing and reappearing might be unprecedented, sure, but I bet there's still lessons they could have learned from community organisers from more localised disasters instead of putting (I assume) politicians at the helm.

The whole reason Captain America means anything is that Steve got dealt a shit hand and turned it into something good. I know no one can ever really know how they're going to react in the moment but we need people whose first instinct is to protect, not attack. Otherwise they might as well have stuck the flag on an assault rifle instead of a shield.

When everyone came back it was... chaos. People had moved - In, on, around. Borders were gone during those years. When they reappeared, people just were wherever they'd disappeared from. Too many people, not enough space. They called them refugees. None of the reappeared knew what had happened. Hell we had some at home who came back, but we were lucky. You know the community, we took em all back in and gave em a place to say. Alma, Chris and their boy all got snapped, they stayed with us for a week until their family had the house ready for them to go back to.

And this is why Steve gave it to you.
