8:43 am - Smooth Screenplay Writing

deborak
I wanted to share a fantastic free online tool for crafting your screenplays.

Formatting these things has always been a nightmare for me because I am not that good with word processing programs. I always screw up templates and style sheets. But at www.fivesprockets.com all those woes vanish with their clear and intuitive typing window. All you have to do is pick the specific formatting you wish from drop down boxes as you type (ex: dialogue, action, transition, etc.) and all the spacing is automatically done for you.

And that's just one great feature! I especially like the "beat sheet" that keeps you on track for the pacing of your story. It reminds you where the hooks and twists should fall by page count, and keeps your story from meandering. There is also a section where you can upload your storyboards which I look forward to trying out.

Anyone else writing screenplays these days?

10:04 am - Communication Update

deborak
I have a brand new writing newsletter if anyone would like to subscribe! You can sign up to receive it by email at http://eepurl.com/gAmhD

Inside it are all the releases in books, games and comics we've put out this year and other fun stuff! If you're not the newsletter type, you can find most of the same information at my writing website, http://www.wynnmercere.com .

Anyone doing NaNoWriMo? You can add me as a Writing Buddy there under the name "partylines."

Lastly, for anyone who had my old personal email, we have changed ISPs and it will soon cease to exist. PM me here, or Tweet @wynnmercere if you need my new one.

I hope all your writing work is progressing. Any small progress is to be celebrated. Right now, I'm working on the second in our fantasy novel series and editing our short story anthology. What have you been writing?

12:34 pm - Hi!

beautyfulevil
Thank you to deborak for the wonderful welcome. I hope that I can live up to the awesomeness of this group.

About me? I'm twenty-six years old, and getting married in September to an amazing guy who makes me want to be a better person every day. I'm also about to be an aunt for the first time. My younger sister is due in August; we're all pretty excited about the new addition to the family.

As for my writing... Well, I'll try anything once. I've written Harry Potter fanfiction mostly, but I think that's gonna change soon. Game of Thrones is becoming one of my favourite book series. I've written romance, action, and even a vampire love story. The vampire story didn't pan out too well, and it was for NaNoWriMo, so I didn't expect much.

Right now with the wedding, my writing has suffered. I hope to get back into it soon. I need the stress relief.

current mood: calm

3:32 pm - Another Item Flung Into The Void

deborak
I never heard a thing back from my last submission which was supposed to have a 3-month response time. The three-month mark passed in mid-May, so whatever, dudes.

Today my novel co-writer and I submitted a query and the first five pages of our book to an agent. Their response time to queries runs about 4 - 6 weeks, and they definitely write back and say yes or no which I much prefer to no communication at all.

Anyone else working on anything?

Quote from an actual published novel. "Her touch aroused him and his cock stood up like a ramrod. Suddenly, he arched his back and ejaculated like a fountain."

There's got to be hope for us all.

That wasn't the treasure he'd hoped to find in that box
"He snorted, dangling the tampon from its string."

I don't agree with all they say, but good food for thought about improvements to your texts here.

10:31 am - Dr. Who job opportunity

deborak
From this morning's Big Finish feed:

"Big Finish are proud to announce a new series of short-story collections starring the Doctor and his companions. Each CD will feature eight brand-new adventures, read by well-known actors and written by...

... you?

Submissions please!

It doesn't matter whether or not you've been published before, but submissions will only be accepted from people who have never written anything for Big Finish. If your story is chosen, you will work with an editor to get the story ready for publication. You will receive the standard author’s contract and rates of pay. Remember, this is a short story, not a play. It should be no more than 2,500 words in length.

Classic Doctors... brand new adventures

You can make use of any of the first eight Doctors. You can also use any of the classic television companions (up to and including Ace) and any of the Big Finish companions. You cannot use either the Ninth, Tenth or Eleventh Doctors, nor their companions, nor any other of the Doctor’s past friends and enemies. No Daleks, no Cybermen, no Time Lords, no Drashigs or Slitheen etc. Your story should be wholly original.

Send your story in the body of an email (no attachments please), with the title in the subject line, to shorttrips@bigfinish.com by 29th March 2010. Entries must be by email only. If you do not have internet access at home (how are you reading this anyway?), you will have to use a friend's access or visit an internet cafe. Please include a short paragraph telling us a little bit about yourself and your writing history.

The first CD is scheduled for release in late 2010."

5:25 pm - Rejection Coming in 3-2-1

deborak
I spent the day finishing my audio script pitch and I just emailed the story synopsis, two-page script sample, and my publishing bio to the producer.

* bites nails *

I've been off the bicycle for a long time when it comes to submissions, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope. But it was a valuable exercise in tailoring a pitch, regardless of the success.

deborak
First, hello to everyone still watching this comm. I'm still writing continuously, but have been very lax in posting anything about the process. I'm going to be inviting a few new folks to this community to see if we can get it active.

So, share! What are you working on? Here's my current rundown:

Editing down a 180,000 word fantasy novel with my co-writer.
~ this is my current personal time management hell, lol

Finishing a historical fantasy novel of my own.
~ I can't wait to get an agent for this one, and can't finish the writing/editing fast enough!

Just obtained writers' guidelines for an audio drama story pitch opportunity.
~ this is totally squeeful and would be a major feather in my cap if successful

Slowly adding facts and source citations to non-fiction genealogy articles.
~ dullsville, but it's good to have something dry to work on when creatively blocked.

ETA: Just got a great idea for a humor book. Make my brain stop, lol!
AND: The editor of my genealogy society newsletter called and reminded me my President's column is due. CRAP! No idea what to write about . . .

6:17 pm - On Writing

deborak
I've decided there are only two categories of fiction in the universe.

Original Character Fic and Established Character Fic (hereafter OCF and ECF).

OCF is self-explanatory. ECF embraces all characters the author didn't create from scratch, including characters from myth, legend and fairy tales. It doesn't matter to me if the writer's "take" on the being is unique or not. It's still an ECF.

Having only these two categories neatly pigeonholes all fiction for me. This system melds both "profic" and "fanfic" because I discard the idea that a published work has any intellectual high-ground over an unpublished work. As a published author of many things, some crappy, some good, I can make that declaration.)

Usually I start out with an idea, write a little. My imagination takes off with the story before I get a chance to write it down. In the past I've never been able to come back and write it down from there. This time has been different. I've been able to pull myself back into the moment I left, and continue on. I might actually make it this year.
