WHO: Snape & Yuna
WHAT: A chance meeting
WHEN: Day 30 while everyone else is out at group activities
WHERE: The library
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete

Snape had been rather please when he had looked out his window and seen the green of a woodland landscape rather than the white of a blizzard. This planet certainly had a bizarre sense of humour. He couldn't imagine why anyone would want to go somewhere so cold for a vacation. Most of the resorts had been rather pleasant, except for the hurricane, of course. This woodland, however, looked like just the place to do some gathering of ingredients for his potions pantry.

After his morning routine, Snape headed out for breakfast, prepared to sit in a corner where he might not be disturbed by the clamour of other people's conversations, and was rather pleased to discover that there were far more people about. Had they been removed by the planet? Had they been out skating when the ground turned into a lake and they all fell in and drowned? It was all the same to him, really. Good either way.

Pleased with the situation, he had taken the opportunity to make a trip to the library. Usually he found the books he wanted and took them back to his rooms, but this time, he thought it would be safe to stay awhile, take the time to peruse the literature before selecting only those volumes his researches required. His frown absent for the moment, he headed for the stacks.

It was embarassing, but Yuna still got lost. It was unbecoming of a summoner, but then those that went on their pilgrimmage had their path laid out at their feet. She'd never been so alone, so lost, as she was in this strange land. Most of her days since coming here she had spent wandering around, looking for something to eat or trying to find her room once more.

Time after time, she passed the same areas, but they all looked strange to her. She frowned as she passed a certain door. It looked familiar, but maybe she should open it and check. You could never tell what might lurk behind a door. It could be a restaurant, and the young woman was feeling a little faint from hunger. She was strong from her journey, but knew she would need to eat soon.

So, she pushed the door open. It was a library, a strange place filled with books. On Spira, there weren't many books. Most people communicated through spheres. Curious, despite her rumbling stomach, she walked into the room and glanced around. Nearly deserted. Although there was one person that she knew, but he hadn't seemed very happy to see her last time. So she left him to himself and wandered over to a nearby bookshelf. Rapt, she gazed at the tomes, not even sure where to start.

In the midst of Snape's pleasure at having the library to himself, he caught sight of movement at the end of one of the stacks. So he wasn't alone after all. At least whoever it was was quiet. Curious now, the wizard walked to the end of his aisle to see if he could see where the person had gone. The only person he could see was a young woman, perusing a shelf of books. She looked familiar. In fact, she looked like...

"Yuna!" Snape strode over to where the young woman was standing. "Yuna, I read your journal entry, about your confusion over the location of your room. I want to say that I think it's appalling that no one helped you. Clearly, this place is crawling with the selfish and the useless. I would have helped you, of course, if I hadn't been in the middle of something. You may be interested to know that I found what I was looking for, and it put me in a very bad mood, which brings me to the other thing I wanted to say to you. I'm sorry for my behaviour yesterday in the pub. I was... out of sorts, and I should not have spoken to you as harshly as I did. Please, accept my apologies." He nodded his head abruptly, yet penitently.

Yuna turned to look at him as he approached, and mentally prepared herself to be spoken sharply to once again. Maybe this was his private library, or maybe he just thought it was. Maybe she was intruding. Her expression was gravely resigned as she looked at him. She thought she was prepared for anything.

Except she wasn't. She recoiled a bit away from him, confused by his words. He'd seemed so unpleasant, and now he was apologizing? Well, sort of, anyway. But she smiled slightly at him, recovering quickly. She was always ready to think the best of people. "It's alright. I accept your apology, Severus Snape. I found my room, after all."

She paused for a bit and then continued. "The worst thing is not knowing how to get food." Which was an understatement, as she was really quite hungry. But she was far too polite to state that. "I remember you saying before that you had found Faith, and that's she's different. I'm sorry." And despite it all, she couldn't help but feel bad for the poor man.

Snape blinked. Was it possible that she didn't know how to get food? Why would the planet not provide it to her just for wanting it? Did it have to be phrased in words? This was ridiculous! Clearly no one here was considerate but he. Thus, it clearly fell to him to save this woman from her evident distress. Snape sighed in disgust at his fellow inhabitants. Yuna seemed to be rather polite and not stupid. She did seem to be exceedingly reluctant to impose. Perhaps that was why she had been so shamefully neglected.

"Have you not eaten since you got here? That is completely unnecessary. Here you can have food whenever you want." Snape eyed Yuna critically, as he would eye one of his students, giving his chosen course of action a last consideration. "Miss... Yuna, would you care to accompany me to luncheon?"

He waited for her response, considering his simile. She did appear to be the age of the eldest of his students at Hogwarts. Would the Sorting Hat have put her in Slytherin? Perhaps she had hidden depths of cunning beneath her glassy surface of inoffensiveness.

Yuna hesitated before speaking. "...No. I wasn't able to find anywhere to eat." She sighed softly. "Sometimes it is even hard for me to remember where my room is. I'm used to travelling, not seeing the same place more than once, you see." She stopped talking to just look at him for a second.

"I can have food whenever I want? How?" She shook her head, having a hard time believing that was possible. The humorous side did strike her, that she'd been starving for no reason, but she kept that down for the moment. The offer he'd made was far more important.

With a sort of solemn dignity, she inclined her head. "Severus Snape, I would be delighted to join you." And she would, too. He might be rude and abrasive, but he was the only person she'd met here, really. Also, he knew where the food was. There was no question of denying his request.

Snape watched Yuna, considering. No, she seemed too innocent to end up in Slytherin, but at least she didn't seem to be made of insufferable Griffyndor-fodder. Chances are, if she were a student, she would be a model one. He might not even find it irritating to teach her. That was rare.

"Very good. Come with me, then. Let me show you the way to the dining hall. I'm surprised you haven't discovered it, yet. It is rather central. How much exploring have you done?"

As Snape led the way out of the library, he was somewhat surprised to find himself conversing with the girl. Being a man of efficiency and purpose, he did not like to waste his breath on those who had nothing interesting to say, and would normally have been silent unless addressed in such a situation. What was it about Yuna that encouraged him to talk to her? He wasn't particularly interested in her mind, her body, or her personal history. But then why shouldn't he converse with her? After all, she was polite and respectful, pleasant and inoffensive to talk to. Was it truly a waste of breath to speak with her. He concluded that it was not.

Yuna nodded slightly. "Yes." It was a statement of absolute agreement, a complete affirmative. Yuna rarely did things by half measures. She was a woman who was very in the moment, and right now, she was spending that moment with him.

In general a fairly quite girl, Yuna was content to walk in silence. she somehow got the feeling that Snape wasn't exactly the most talkative man out there, either. So she was more than a little surprised that he would speak. However, she was far too polite to let this show in her voice.

"I think I was going in circles. I kept finding the library, my room, and some odd room with many screens in it. I must have missed it." It was more than a little embarassing to admit, but he had asked, and she didn't lie. "Have you been here long?" She hesitated for a moment before venturing another question. "Do you have a title? I feel very strange calling you by your full name."

Snape nodded. He wasn't surprised she had been going in circles. After all, no one had offered her the least assistance. Well, except himself, of course. It was a lucky thing for her he had been willing to take time away from his urgent search to show her the placque. He shuddered to think of the poor girl wandering the snowy mountains, lost and alone.

"I shall show you the rooms I know. There are many rooms and things to do here. Many of them are a waste of time, in my opinion, but you are welcome to do any of them. I have been here for nearly a month, that's thirty days, give or take, where I come from. As for a title, in my former life I was a professor of magical arts. You may call me Professor, if that feels better to you."

She was a good girl, attentive and appropriately inquisitive. He found he actually had an impulse to impart to her what he could of the knowledge he had gained of this place.

The young woman nodded in agreement. "Very well, then, Professor Snape." She really did feel a lot better knowing what to call him. In her world, she would have known how to address anyone, so it was a bit disconcerting to be here and not quite know what to call anyone.

"Thank you." She didn't elaborate. Maybe she would go to the other rooms, maybe she wouldn't, but either way she'd like to know where they were. However, as he clearly disapproved of such frivolity, she kept her thoughts on that subject to herself.

She waited a moment, and then set down the book she'd been holding. Of course, she slid it back properly in it's place, because she wouldn't do anything else. "Shall we go, then?" She waited for him, wondering if he would want to wait. She would wait, just for the opportunity to get shown around a bit.

Snape blinked. They were still in the library. Why had he not left already? Was the conversation that compelling? Talking to someone was one thing, but setting aside your tasks in order to converse was something completely different. He was genuinely surprised at himself.

"Of course. Follow me."

Turning, he led Yuna out of the library and down the hall. Along the way, he pointed out the games room, the ballroom, and the theatre. Heading up the stairs, he opened the door to the dining hall for her. This new resort had a lofted ceiling with a log cabin motif that Snape found odd. It was like an attempt to be rustic by spending a lot of money, only the planet didn't have to spend money, did it?

"Well, here is where we eat. Shall we find a table? After lunch, I shall show you the rest, if you are still interested."

Yuna saw no need to speak. Instead, she simply fell into step behind him. She really wasn't much of one for chatter, and besides, she wanted to keep a sharp eye out. This was the first time anyone had really shown her around, and for all she knew, it was the last. She didn't want to miss a thing.

She watched, recognizing the games room as the one she'd seen before. She still didn't really get the purpose of it, but kept going. The ballroom was new, but they had those in Spira. The theatre was fascinating, and she lingered there for a moment before dragging herself away. It reminded her of the theatre in Luca.

The dining room, however, was just about the most welcome thing that she'd ever seen. She followed him in with barely disguised eagerness, nodding her thanks toward him for holding the door. "It's strange... like the shack of the poorest on Spira, only big." She wandered around, peering at the walls, and finally made her way back to him.

"Yes, please." Her stomach growled slightly, reminding her of just how hungry she was. Still, she waited politely for him to find a table. After all, maybe there was ettique here that she didn't know, since she was just new.

Snape was very impressed with Yuna's manners. Her respect and deference were extraordinarily welcome, especially after the disrespect and insults he had received the day before. Furthermore, he knew very well that she must be extremely hungry, yet she was polite nonetheless. Her parents must be rare creatures indeed to have raised someone like this. Perhaps she had had a very sheltered childhood, free from the corrupting influence of other children. It was no matter if she had. He liked her either way.

"Let us sit here."

Snape had found them a small table with two chairs by the large floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the lake; small so their lunch wouldn't be disturbed by overly-friendly morons, and overlooking the lake because, though he would not admit it if asked, this new setting reminded him somewhat of Hogwarts.

"Now, we have two options when it comes to getting food. We can give our order to one of the lithic waiters, like muggles do, and wait for them to bring it out, or we can simply think of whatever we desire to eat and it shall appear."

Maybe it was a mistake, but she let some of her thoughts come to her lips. "Such a strange place this is. Everytime anything happens it only gets stranger." She was basically pondering out loud, and shook her head slightly. It was of no consequence, and she didn't see Snape being the type to really care about her musings.

"But never mind about that. Yes, let's sit." She walked over to the chair and seated herself before her oddly mismatched gaze turned to the lake. It really was very lovely, and she allowed herself a smile as she looked at it. "Pretty."

But her attention was back on him as he began to speak, to explain what was going on. Since this was, again, the first time anyone had really done much in that way, she wanted to be sure she picked up as much as she could before he disappeared again. So her face was gravely attentive as she listened. "What is a..." But she cut herself off and addressed the Planet directly.

"Excuse me... Planet? I would very much like some food right now. Something that reminds me of home." She wasn't sure how specific she had to be, but apparently that was enough because a meal of fruits, some bread made from a Spiran grain, and a few pieces of some root vegetable that looked a little like a carrot but was purple, appeared in front of her. She gasped, but was delighted. It was just like a meal she would have had back home in Besaid. But she waited for Snape, to see if he wanted to order anything.

Snape watched Yuna order. She caught on quick, he thought. When her food appeared, he found himself fascinated by the fruits and vegetable on her plate. He did not recognize them as being from any plant he was familiar with. Instantly, his mind went to work, imagining ways they could be used to make new potions. Of course, he had no idea what their qualities were, but he really couldn't help it.

None of that showed on his face, however, as he gestured to a golem. He placed an order for pumpkin juice and a bowl of pea soup, before turning back to watch Yuna eat. He still preferred ordering from a servant. He told himself it was more civilized, but truly he never missed an opportunity to be served.

"May I ask, what is that you are eating?"

Only once he had his food did she start to eat. A starving person might be expected to shove their food into their faces as fast as they could, but not Yuna. Instead, she ate at a measured pace. She knew she wouldn't do anyone any good by choking, in the long run. Everything was delicious, though, and she set about eating in a very serious way.

She stopped at once, however, to answer him. Anything else would have been beyond rude. "This? Bread, and vegetables." She looked puzzled at his food. "Why is your juice orange?" She'd never seen anything like what he was eating, and looked at it with barely restrained curiousity.

"This is all food that is grown or produced at home." She smiled faintly, wistful. "Lulu, Wakka and I used to all eat this together... and when Tidus came..." A flush rose to her cheeks, and she picked up her glass of water and took a hasty sip. She didn't really want to talk about Tidus. "Kimahri ate different foods, of course. He's a Ronso."

Snape blinked, processing her statements. He didn't waste time while eating, and fit his thoughts and comments around it. She spoke so matter-of-factly, but why would she not? It was all very obvious and commonplace to her, no doubt.

"I am familiar with a great many vegetables, fruits, grains, and herbs, Yuna, and I have never seen those items before. I would very much like to study them. Please, what are they called?"

He tood a sip of his juice.

"My juice is orange because it is pumpkin juice. What colour are pumpkins where you come from?"

He continued eating, giving her a chance to respond before he asked her to summon some Ronso food for his perusal. It did not occur to him at all that his questions might seem forward and intrusive to some. He was merely curious.

Yuna glanced down at the slices of bread. "This is made from a variety of wheat that only grows on Besaid. That's the island my home is on. It doesn't really have a name, since we didn't need one. Nor for the vegetables. You can simply call them Besaid grains and vegetables." She set her cup down and looked down at her food thoughtfully.

"It is kind of strange, isn't it? I never thought about it before..." She shrugged and picked up a slice of what appeared to be a tomato, but was bright, almost acidic, green. "If you want to study my food, you would normally have to go to Besaid. But here, I think you could just ask the Planet for some, or..." She glanced down at her food, sighed softly, and pushed the plate toward him. "It might not work for you, since you don't really know what you're asking for."

She'd eaten enough anyway, she decided, so she simply sat there and studied her dining companion. "Pumpkins? No one would make juice out of them. They're poisonous." She grew anxious when she realized what he was drinking. "Do you need me to heal you?"

Snape accepted Yuna's food graciously -- he was, after all, eager to examine it -- but wondered if she had eaten enough. Perhaps he should offer it back, and ask her if she might summon more for him. No, that would seem ungrateful, he decided. She was a big girl. She could decide for herself if she wanted to give up her lunch.

"Thank you very much."

The professor had just begun to examine the vegetables, when Yuna's comment about pumpkins caught him by surprise.

"Poisonous? Whatever are you talking about? No, I don't need healing. It's just pumpkin juice!"

He stopped, seeing her earnest face, realizing he had unnecessarily raised his voice.

"Forgive me. I did not mean to make light of the vegetables of your homeland. Where I come from, pumpkins are not poisonous. Would you like to try some of their juice?"

Yuna simply nodded, rather curious as to what he was going to do with her food. Anyway, she had eaten quite a bit, and had much more of an idea where to get more if she needed it. Watching his reaction to the perfectly normal food was strange and not a little interesting to her.

His reply to her comment had her recoil a bit, and she did her best to bow though she was sitting down. "I'm sorry." She hated upsetting people, and it sort of looked like she had. But then he asked for forgivness, and she smiled in relief at him.

All bets were off, though, when he offered her pumpkin juice. But she was, at heart, a brave girl, and she also knew she could dispel the poison if needed. So she steeled herself as if she were going into battle, and picked up his goblet. She took the tiniest of sips. It didn't immediately kill her, so she drank a bit more.

"Oh, this is really good!"

Snape was fascinated by watching Yuna take a sip of what she was convinced was poison. She barely knew him, and yet she trusted his word in a matter of life and death. Of course, it wasn't as simple as that. She had seen him drink it, so she had a reason to believe him, but he could have already taken the antidote... The potions master completely forgot the strange vegetables as he enjoyed the spectacle before him.

"Well, I'm glad you like it. I barely notice the flavour anymore, I've had it so much. I must like it. I still order it."

Snape took his cup back and had another sip himself before going back to examining the vegetables. They resembled plant-stuffs he was familiar with, but one never knew what qualities lurked in something that played that trick.

"Could I get you to order uncooked versions of these vegetables? I would like five of each."

Yuna nodded. "Yes." She wasn't really one to speak very much, at least not in words. Actions, to her, were much more important than words, and she strove much more to do rather than say. But she'd learned that it was usually better if she said something. It made people less nervous.

She raised her hand politely, deciding to actually order this time, as he had. A golem was instantly at their table, and she spoke very politely to it. "I would like more of these Besaid grains and vegetables, please. Five of each. Thank you." Even to these strange creatures, she couldn't be rude. "Oh!" She'd almost forgotten. "And some pumpkin juice... but from Professor Snape's world, please, not mine!"

With that order being given, she settled back to study him studying her food. It was very interesting. She remembered Marcus' reaction when she'd taken a sip of the juice that had seemed so normal to him, but totally strange to her. She wondered if she would ever get the change to study his food. Chances were good, though, that they wouldn't really be spending much time together. She had to get off Mirage and go back home.

"Is it... very different?" She had left him in silence for a long while, but eventually her curiousity got the better of her.

Snape was pleased with Yuna's responsiveness to his request. He sipped more pumpkin juice as they waited. He found her manner fairly interesting, too. She was rather earnest, but very reserved. Polite almost to a fault, her considerateness was going to get her in trouble someday, he suspected. Watching her, he waited, letting her speak first.

"I can't really say, at the moment. I need to do some experiments on them in my laboratory. They may have some hidden qualities, of which even you might not be aware."

He continued eyeing her until the vegetables arrived. Reaching behind him, he grabbed a basket he had mentally requested. He would ask a golem to bring them to his room while he showed the girl the rest of the resort. His experiments could wait until that was done, at least.

Yuna waited until the dark-haired man was ready to go, and rose to her feet. She was feeling much better, actually, comfortably full but not overfull. And she had much more curiousity now that the food problem was taken care of, too.

"Okay." She nodded and smiled slightly at the man. "Shall we, then?" She fully intended to take him up on his offer, because she wasn't sure when she'd get another like it and she was sick of being lost all the time.

As they headed off toward the door together, she found that she was almost excited about what she might see. It was a strange place, here but almost pleasant. For a jail, of course, as she kept reminding herself over and over. For a jail.
