WHO: Tonks, Gwen Cooper, Haruka Ten'ou, Vaarsuvius
WHAT: Group activities - Jet Skiing
WHEN: Day 30, early afternoon
WHERE: The lake
RATING: PG?
STATUS: Complete

She'd been having a blast the last couple of days, no doubt about it. Okay, so she did feel a little bit guilty for the fact that she hadn't even remotely been trying to escape, but there was too much fun to be had. Today, though, she would track Marcus down and they would see about getting off this rock. Although maybe she could trip him back into bed first, that sounded like a good idea to her...

With these pleasant thoughts in mind, she opened her door. And was immediately confronted with the note that had been posted there. She sighed softly. "Really? Again?" She knew what the thing was before even opening it. Though she complained, something in her dark eyes and sudden grin implied that she wasn't really upset. She actually really enjoyed the group activities, though she would probably deny it.

She had time for breakfast, or rather brunch, before she was to be there. She dressed quickly and then headed out. Though she was more often than note late, she was actually the first one to arrive at the lake front. There was some strange muggle machines there, and she looked at them curiously as she waited. The light breeze blew her hair, purple today, around, and she tucked it impatiently behind her ear.

Gwen found the note and only one thing came to mind,"Oh great, I'm not over this thing and I have to jet-ski" the pretty cop was not too keen on the idea. So as she pulled on some banged up jeans and a shirt that has seen better days (since knowing her luck in the sewers of Cardiff a header into the water was looming) she scribbled a note for Jack and Ianto in case they came looking for her,"Trapped in "group fun" so will vent later. Be ready for the stink from me taking a header into the water. Gwen" as she asked for a bag of cough drops and found another little bag of drops waiting by the door as she followed the golem to the jet-ski area. She had not seen the purple haired woman before and called in spite of her sore throat,"Fellow target of "group fun"?" using air quotes. She let out a round of coughing and added,"Tail end at least I hope of a sinus infection".

Having enjoyed the snowmobile the day before, Haruka was surprised to discover that the snow was gone when she woke up in the morning. She was more surprised to discover the invitation on her door. "Jet-skiing?" she mused aloud. She grinned. It could be far worse, she decided. And she'd get to meet a few new people, and perhaps pool some information and bounce ideas off of them about how to get out of here.

Early afternoon, she bade goodbye to Michiru and headed out toward the lake, which had been frozen over only a day before. She saw two people by the lakefront, one with purple hair that wouldn't be out of place among her group of friends at home, and another with dark hair. She came up to them just in time to see the dark-haired woman's air quotes and catch the last of her words. If the woman wasn't feeling well, why wasn't she wearing a mask over her nose and mouth? Ah well, it wasn't for Haruka to worry about. She'd just be careful not to get coughed or sneezed on, and ask the planet for a few vitamins later on.

"Hello," she said, making her presence known to the two women. She bowed slightly. "I'm Ten'ou Haruka. Call me Haruka." She grinned at them. "Anyone been on a jet-ski before? Because it's entirely new to me."

"Put me down you nartificial creation of rock and stone! Dismissal! How dare you have spell resistance high enough to resist me! You don't even have an intelligence score!" The shouting could be heard before the golem came into view carrying the twisting, snarling and generally very annoyed Vaarsuvius. The golem put the elf down near the three women, and walked off, seemingly unaffected by the struggle it had been to get the unwilling elf from his/her room to the lake. V glared after the golem, debating whether or not to test if the 'no killing' rule extended to the golems. And if disintegration counted as killing.

Eventually s/he sighed. It wasn't worth it, not yet. Not until s/he had unraveled more of this strange plane's secrets. S/he smoothed down his/her robes and turned to the other three. "What sort of inane indignity are these creatures forcing us to participate in? I have never heard of a 'jet-ski'."

Tonks was more than pleased when the first of them arrived, though she winced in sympathy at her raspy voice. "A bit of pepper-up potion would fix that right up for you." She informed her, with a bright smile of welcome. "Yeah, time for some fun... do you know what a 'jet ski' is?"

Before there was a chance to respond to that, though, someone else came up. Tonks had seen this particular girl with another girl, and smiled at her. "Haruka? I'm Tonks. People keep asking if I know you because of Michiru's hair." She pointed to her own bright tresses. "Nice to finally meet you. No, I've never even heard of..."

Once more she was cut off, however, by some very irritated spellcasting. She looked curiously as a very strange creature was brought to the group. "You look like Legolas!" She hadn't met the other elf, of course, but she knew him on sight. "Wotcher! I'm Tonks." It was the third time she'd introduced herself, but it sounded just as bright and cheery as ever. And tried not to stare too obviously as she tried to figure out what gender the elf newcomer was.

"Well, we're supposed to jet ski." She shrugged, having no idea how this was done. "Anyone know what it is? I don't." She gazed doubtfully at the contraptions.

"Tail end of a sinus bug and I came armed" Gwen lifed the little bag of cough drops. "The raspy throat has a way of hanging around with me but otherwise I'm not catching or anything nasty. By the way I'm Gwen" since she had not met any of the group before now. "As for the skis I'm clueless, I'm used to the city and since the question will come up Cardiff,Wales 2009" adding in her details. But the wedding band on Gwen's chain easily caught the light outside.

She racked her brain,"Rhys told me about these things once, people use these things to ski on the water" ready for questions about her husband if anyone asked.

Haruka chuckled at the idea of Michiru and Tonks knowing each other purely because of their uniquely colored hair. She was relieved that Gwen at least said she wasn't contagious any longer. She glanced at the jet-skis, and was about to remark at how similar they looked to a snowmobile, when the purple-haired elf was dropped in their midst.

She blinked at the elf. If people thought Haruka was difficult to place in terms of gender, they'd never seen this elf. Haruka looked more noticeably feminine in her boys' schol fuku than the elf did in red robes. But the elf didn't look exactly masculine either. True androgyny, and it left Haruka baffled as to how to address the newcomer. The surly attitude wasn't helping much. She bowed to the elf. "Haruka," she said, offering a tight smile. "Pleased to meet you. And you are?"

She looked back to Gwen. "Tokyo, Japan, 1995," she offered, "So don't tell me who beats us at Nagano in a few years." She grinned.

Vaarsuvius took a deep breath and visibly calmed him/herself. These people probably had nothing to do with his/her current predicament. In fact, their conversation seemed to indicate that they too were prisoners of whatever being had trapped them all here. There was no use being mad at them.

"I am the wizard Vaarsuvius" s/he said, with a slight nod. S/he had never heard of the places people were mentioning, but if whatever-it-was that had trapped them all here was pulling people from different planes, that wasn't surprising. V hadn't had a chance yet explore the other planes. At least the one with the brightly colored hair knew s/he was an elf. She went up slightly in his/her estimation.

"I'm Tonks, nice to meet you all." She smiled and waved at the others cheerfully. "I'm from England, London actually." She raised an eyebrow at Gwen, since their home countries were so close together. It made her feel more comfortable, in some odd way.

"Well, I guess we'd better give this a go, hadn't we? Otherwise those bullies will come and probably tie us on." The golems probably would, actually, since they were pretty much determined that they would be doing this. Sure, there were none around right now, but that could change quickly.

"Wait a second... was that there a second ago?" A screen had appeared off to the side, and on it, people were engaged in the very activity that they were about to be now. She watched as a voice started talking, instructing them on how this was done. She listened. It seemed easy enough, in theory.

That was when an idea formed in Gwen's head so she figured no harm in having a little fun. "We seem like a sporting sort of group so race around the lake on those things to start with?" deciding her status as a total klutz when it comes to sports would come out soon enough. She made a mental note to ask Jack about the idea of not being able to tell if someone was male or female after seeing Vaarsuvius in person. She also watched the little video, being from the city made her clueless about these things and it showed a little.

Haruka agreed with Tonks that the golems would probably force them to get started if they didn't show some initiative. She was about to say something much to that effect when Gwen mentioned making a race of it, once they figured out how to ride the things. She grinned. "You're on," she said.

Then, the screen appeared out of nowhere and began showing an instructional video. Haruka turned to it, following along with what the instructors were saying and doing. It was very similar to her snowmobile from the day before, only you practically stood up on these things rather than sat down, even though there was a seat. It would be a workout for the legs, but Haruka wasn't concerned with that at all.

"Doesn't seem too difficult," she remarked, glancing around at the others in their little group. She looked at the elf. "You might want to find a change of clothing first. Those robes will get soaked and weigh you down."

Vaarsuvius watched the screen in fascination. "What sort of scrying is this?" s/he asked no one in particular. Still s/he watched the screen carefully. These strange contraptions were nothing like s/he had ever seen, and s/he didn't want to look foolish on them. More foolish, s/he revised, watching some of the idiotic tricks the figures on the screen were performing.

At the mention of racing, s/he looked sharply at the dark haired human. "What sort of elf do you think I am?" s/he asked, affronted. "I am the great and powerful wizard Vaarsuvius, master of the elements, party to secrets of the universe that would drive lesser mortals mad! I will not debase myself by tearing across this lake on some sort infernal contraption just for your entertainment. The foul creatures of this land may have insisted I participate, but I will not make a fool of myself for your entertainment."

S/he glared at the jet skis, his/her lips pressed together in irritation. What sort of demented wizard had thought of these things? No, not wizard. No wizard worth the name would have created these. It had to have been a sorcerer. A sorcerer would probably get a kick out of something like this.

At the suggestion that s/he change, V waved an absent hand. "My magics should be more than enough to protect me."

Tonks grinned at the mention of a race, and her eyes sparkled at the challenge. "I'll race!" She was definitely the sort who enjoyed sporting competition, and it looked like she wasn't the only one. She gave the elf a bit of an amused glance, but chose to say nothing. She got the sense it would be better that way, somehow.

Tripping every couple of feet or so, the witch made her way down to the shore. "Oh, brilliant!" Her eyes lit up at the mention of magic. "I can do that, too!" She turned back around to Vaarsuvius and produced her wand. With a flick and a muttered incantation, her entire body became water repellent. "No using spells for winning, though. That's cheating." She spoke firmly, not thinking she and the wizard/witch should have an unfair advantage.

Thus protected, she turned back to the odd contraptions. "Weird muggle stuff..." But she shrugged good-naturedly and swung a leg over one. was similar to horseback riding, which she remembered from the Dude Ranch resort, but she wasn't quite sure it would stay that way. From the informational video, she was supposed to mostly stand... she shrugged and looked around for the way to start this machine.

"Be fair to the fact two of us are not like you!" Gwen had to smile for a change. "But if I remember right there is usually a starter on these things from what Rhys explained that one time" as Gwen went to locating something to start whatever this machine was. "Think along the lines of cars or the local equal!" as she pointed to what she figured was the starter.

Haruka looked across at the elf. "It's not for our entertainment, Vaarsuvius-san," she said, "it's meant for us all to enjoy together. It won't be that bad." She watched in amazement as both Vaarsuvius and Tonks performed some bit of magic to make themselves water-repellent. "That's really handy," she said, shaking her head and grinning at Gwen's statement, "even if it does tilt the odds just a bit in your favor. Of course, you'll probably need it, since you're racing me." She smirked as she walked over to the nearest jet-ski.

With a laugh at the odd word Tonks used, Haruka shook her head and mounted the jet-ski. She looked down at the controls. Shouldn't be too different from the snowmobile, she figured as she turned the engine on. "I should warn you," she said, looking around the group, "I race in formula one and motocross for a living." She started her jet-ski forward, but slowly, as she got a feel for the machine and its maneuverability.

Vaarsuvius raised a single eyebrow at Tonks's enthusiasm, and very causal use of magic. Probably a sorcerer - she seems like the type to be doing magic based on charm alone.

"I would not dream of using magic for an unfair advantage in a minor contest such as this." s/he said in response to her admonishment. "Magic is too great a force to waste on such trivial contests."

S/he watched as Haruka mounted the strange contraption and turn something that caused the machine to sputter to life. V picked out one of the machines and tried to mount it like the girl had, only to find it dipped and tilted, nearly dumping him/her into the shallow water V was forced to scramble onto the thing is an most undignified way. Muttering elven curses s/he got arranged and balanced. It was like a much smaller version of the ships they had fled Azure City on; constantly rocking with the motion of the water.

Taking a deep breath, s/he turned the key, and had to make a mad grab for the handlebars as the machine jerked forward. It took a few minutes to get the crazy thing under control, during which time the jet-ski careened crazilly, though thankfully not too fast, though the water. His/her mouth set in a thin, disapproving line V brought the machine back around to where the others were.

"I suppose" s/he said dryly, "That there's no point in trying to leave?"

"Alright, then!" Tonks spoke in her typical cheerful manner, and gave the elf a bright smile and a wave. She nodded to Gwen, stating her thanks without words, and turned the key on the contraption. It sputtered to life, and she grinned in triumph. "Nah, no use whatsoever." She sounded positively thrilled about the whole thing, not upset at all. "One of those stone men would drag you back, you know."

With that, she prodded the machine into motion. "Well, that will make you a bit of a challenge, then, won't it?" She smiled cheerfully at Haruka, a healthy gleam of competition in her eyes as she began to carefully steer the strange muggle contraption around in the shallower water. It wasn't all that different from a broom, really... only it responded to the controls, where a broom was more about leaning and leg pressure.

"Alright. I'm ready." She winked playfully at the other members of her group. Win, lose, or draw, she was going to have fun with this.

After two near headers into the water (good thing Gwen wore her trashed jeans for a change) she had gotten a hang of these things. "Confession, I'm awful at any sport beyond darts and cards. Me and water usually seem to meet in the form of a header into the drink" able to see the humor in her ongoing problems.

Haruka looked left and right at her competitors as they made their way to her position. She laughed at Gwen's assessment of water, but in a good-natured way, since the woman seemed to think it somewhat humorous herself. She caught the gleam in Tonks' eye. Good. At least one of these women (men? What exactly was Vaarsuvius-san?) was serious about a competition. And she seemed to have gotten the hang of the jet-ski pretty quickly. She shook her head at Vaarsuvius's comments. "I've seen the golems drag people back after they've tried to leave an activity," she said. "So you might as well make the best of it."

She looked out across the lake. The surface was calm, aside from the little ripples their jet-skis sent out as they bobbed and the motors hummed. "First one all the way across to the other side, around that buoy over there," she pointed to the little red and white thing bobbing across the lake, which had appeared as if for that very purpose, "and back here wins. Okay?" She glanced back at the golem standing on the edge of the lake and watching them. "Give us a signal to go, all right?" she shouted to it.

Vaarsuvius muttered something that might or might not have been rude. But since s/he had no desire to be dragged back here again, s/he slowly piloted the jet-ski more or less into line with the others.

"If we must do this, then I am in favor of getting it over with quickly." s/he said with a sigh. "And if we must race, then so be it."

The golem standing on the lake edge made a loud booming noise that V assumed was the signal to start. S/he accelerated the jet-ski, only to have the infernal machine jerk all over the place. S/he cursed as s/he tried to avoid hitting anyone else, flipping over, or heading back the way s/he had come. Which resulted in the elf making very little headway in the race at all.

Tonks was ready to go, but she politely waited until everyone else was, too. At the noise, she revved the engine on the strange muggle machine, and she was off. Anyone who had seen Tonks wandering around on land would likely be surprised by how she handled the thing. But it really wasn't all that different from a broomstick, only louder, and she wouldn't be much of an Auror if she couldn't ride on one of those.

Same basic principal, she decided as the machine took off. She glanced at Haruka, who shared the lead with her, and gave her a grin and a quick wave. Then, her entire attention was focused ahead of her, at the turn around point to head back to the finish line of the race.

Gwen's comment had her chuckle softly, though. She was used using the exact same sense of humor that the other woman was exhibiting, and she found herself liking the woman. Of course, she liked nearly everyone, so that wasn't usual. A quick glance back at the struggling elf had her feeling really a little sorry for him/her, but that didn't stop her from trying to win.

Gwen had gotten the hang of the machine with only one near header so far as she quickly caught up to Tonks. "Its like breaking the speed limit but on water!" she had to finally crack a smile. "At least I warned Jack and Ianto of the chance of water stink since me and water usually means a header" able to laugh it off since they always made her see the humor in her little accidents.

Haruka had been off like a shot at the sound, and had let out a cry of delight at the movement of the jet-ski. She had little difficulty handling it, and while it was harder to maneuver than the snowmobile the day before, it was still doable. She was just glad she had strong muscles from all of the running and fighting at home. She glanced around, noticing Tonks and Gwen keeping pace with her, and grinned. Competition always made the race interesting, and she was glad to have some proper competition here.

She waved back at Tonks, impressed by the woman's handling of the jet-ski. Then, she caught what Gwen was shouting, and laughed. "Breaking the speed limit is always fun!" she shouted back. "Let's see how fast these things can go!" With that, she gunned her engine, tearing through the water and making a bee-line for the buoy at the far end of the lake. She'd have to swing wide to make the turn, and if the others were too close on top of her, it would be difficult. She spared a quick glance back and caught sight of V still struggling with the jet-ski. The poor elf. Elves and technology didn't seem to go together at all, from what Michiru had told her of Legolas's ignorance of anything electronic, and what she was seeing of V's driving. But, she spared little thought for it, since she was trying to race like the wind.

V hated looking stupid, and this whole situation seemed set up to do just that. S/he growled and wrestled the jet-ski into a more or less straight path and gunned the engine. This time s/he was a bit more prepared for the machine's sudden lurch forward, but still only just managed to stay on. Face set in a mask of concentration s/he headed for the others. There was no way s/he was going to win this, but s/he wasn't going to give up.

Haruka was right neck in neck with her, which wasn't a surprise. However, the fact that first Gwen and then the elf had nearly caught up, that actually made her very happy. She hated competitions that weren't any, well, competition. And this clearly wasn't the case here.

She flashed a smile at the elf and the girl who were coming up behind her, and revved the engine as fast as it would go. But she soon had to slow down, because the end of the race 'track' was coming up and she had to keep it slow enough to take the corner. Also, she didn't want to collide with Haruka.

It really was a lot like riding a broom, and after the brief period of being disoriented by the strange controls, she was getting pretty good at it. She slowed down to take the turn, but was ready to speed up the second it was completed.

Gwen easily caught up as she hung a left on the machine while avoiding a header into the water. "Maybe for once I get through a sport without a disaster waiting to happen" she could joke about her status as a klutz after all. She figured at least she would have a story for Jack and Ianto once the 3 of them could touch base and trade tales of the day so far. But she gunned the gas on the ski, part of her itching for a Cardiff style traffic jam at this point.

Now, to see if this machine really was as much like a motorcycle as she thought it was. Tonks was right on top of her, with Gwen just about there, and Vaarsuvius coming up on their rear. Haruka gunned her engine in sync with Tonks, but kept going fast for a second or so longer than the other woman, sending a wave of water spraying up and out as she turned. Fortunately, she was on the outside at the moment, so it wouldn't douse her competitors. That would be unfair. She slowed down as she went through the arc of the curve, using her natural sense of balance to keep from pitching over as the jet-ski tilted at an angle with the water through the curve. As she straightened out, she gunned the engine again, shooting forward with a shout of joy. These things really were fun. She glanced back to see where the others were, hoping they were still right on her tail. She hadn't had this close a competition in ages, and it was quite a rush.

Teeth clenched tight in concentration, V gunned the engine again, finally getting somewhat of a feel for the machine. S/he even managed to close a decent amount of the distance before they rounded the buoy. Unfortunately, controlling the jet-ski going more or less straight was far easier than turning. Wrestling the machine around the turn nearly dumped the elf into the lake, but s/he managed to right his/her self before any damage was done to anything other than his/her robes.

Haruka's daring move got her in the lead, but Tonks was determined she wouldn't stay there. She recovered quickly from the turn and gunned the engine so the strange muggle machine jumped forward as if propelled forward by magic. It wasn't, though, of course. Tonks was far too ethical to use an advantage like that with muggles.

Sheets of water sprayed up behind her, and she was pretty sure by the end of this they were all going to be more or less soaking. Laughing happily, she allowed the contraption to spring forward, and she thought she might even be able to catch up with Haruka, if their luck held. All in all, it was looking to be a fairly close four-way race.

Gwen decided to break out a trick she had picked up from watching Owen, for a minute feeling his voice snarking off in the back of her mind. "Time to use the Cardiff weevil evasive manuver" as she gunned the machine and easily pulled off the trick (more shocked she had without a header since she had only seen Owen use the move) and quickly catching up to the others.

She'd been right; the others were very close behind her. Tonks in the lead, with Gwen just about level with her, and Vaarsuvius just beyond Gwen. She felt the adrenaline surging through her veins, and grinned even more widely. Best feeling in the world, a close race like this, on a fast vehicle.

"This was the best idea ever!" she shouted across to Tonks. "Let's take it all the way!" She faced forward again and hit the accelerator, working to keep her lead as they headed toward the shore again. It was coming up fast.

As much as s/he loathed to admit it, this was beginning to be a bit of fun. The contraption moved through the water faster than anything V had experienced before, and s/he had to admit it was a bit of a rush. Not, mind you, that s/he planed on ever admitting that to anyone.

S/he swerved suddenly to avoid a spray of water kicked up by Gwen's jet-ski, and managed to move right into the path of the spray from Tonks's machine as she jumped her machine ahead. The arc of water hit Vaarsuvius fully, and the elf was forced to slow down until s/he could wipe the water out of his/her eyes. His/her robes were soaked now, the fabric suddenly feeling three times heavier. V bit back an elven curse and focused on making it back to shore. Sooner s/he was back on shore, the sooner s/he could get dry.

It was a little surprising to her that this was such a close race, but really, that was all for the best. Who liked being in something that they were only able to win because everyone else wasn't sure what they were doing? Of course, Haruka had been in the lead nearly from the beginning, no surprise there. But the elf and the girl catching up, that was something else. Although she wasn't sure how the elf in particular would deal with getting wet...

Enough of that. She had a lead to take. "Bloody brilliant idea..." She tossed out to Haruka, and then revved the engine to top speed. The end marker was coming up, and slowly, inch by inch, she was gaining on the blonde Asian woman. She wasn't sure she could even win anymore, but if she didn't run out of lake, she might just be able to make it a tie...

Gwen pulled a trick more used in Cardiff traffic and weevil chasing, but figured it was worth a shot. It easily pulled her neck and neck with the others. "Ironic since I get traffic jams but the tricks work just the same" as she pulled off a tricky move to avoid the oncoming curve and eaily pull into a small lead for second.

Haruka was surprised that Gwen managed to take the lead, and she gunned her engine, determined to gain it back. Tonks was still keeping pace with her as she went; she could just see the woman's brightly-colored hair out of the corner of her eye. The marker was fast approaching, the end was in sight. Just a little faster, a little further....

Focused on getting back to shore and not the racers in front of him/her, Vaarsuvius didn't notice Gwen's unexpected move until too late. S/he had to brake sharply to avoid collision, and yanked the handlebars around, sending up a huge spray of water, and tipping dangerously to one side. S/he hung there for what felt like an eternity before gravity took over, pulling elf and jet-ski over into the water.

Robes inundated with water tried to drag V down, but s/he managed to break the water's surface, gasping and sputtering. This was more than enough. Yes, they'd decided not to use magic, but that was to win the race. V no longer cared about the foolish race. S/he managed to grab hold of the overturned jet-ski long enough to gain the concentration to cast a fly spell. The elf shot out of the water, over the other racers and landed in a none-too-dignified heap on the lake shore.

Tonks looked up, and her natural clumsiness took over. As V shot over her head, she gasped and sort of unconsciosuly revved the motor. The machine shot forward, and she plowed full-force into the sand. She spilled out, landing on her hands and knees, and shook her head to clear it. It had been rather sudden.

She might have won, though! She wouldn't know, really, until she looked up. Which would mean untangling herself from the rather undignified position she found herself in. She slowly raised her head, wondering if her last surge of speed had taken her beyond Haruka and Gwen. They had both been slightly ahead of her...
