WHO: Gwen, OTA
WHAT: Watching People in the Common Room
WHEN: Day 29
WHERE: Common Area
RATING: PG-PG 13 tops
STATUS: Incomplete

The night in the steam had paid off and seemed to cut short whatever Gwen was coming down with (at least for the moment). So she dressed (jeans and a simple red shirt) and realized she was still a bit raspy throat wise,"Cough drops?" she asked between some coughing and found a little bag of drops next to her brown leather jacket. "Now to be quasi social, but first coffee of the non paint cleaner sort" as she walked through the resort and landed in the common room to find a steaming cup of coffee. So she curled up in one of the massive arm chairs with her coffee and notebook, taking notes on things she had overheard. She decided to book that heart to heart with Ianto for the next day since for now she had a bigger question, unraveling the mystery of this planet and the other people that were pulled here.

So for now between sips of coffee she just people watched and took notes, part of her wanting to be ankle deep in the flying snow but knew with her throat it was not the best of ideas. But she got to thinking of one thing, she and Ianto were due and with him staying with her for the short term they could finally talk. "For now I lurk" slipping a drop into her mouth to calm her throat.

Sarah smiled and took a seat next to Gwen. "Thank you," she said, fidgeting just a bit to make herself comfortable. "That was a week ago for me," she remarked. "It's nice to know that Rift in Cardiff has proved useful. And I'm glad you came out of it all okay. We had a few broken dishes ourselves, but no lasting damage, thankfully."

Sarah frowned slightly. "All of you are here?" That wasn't good. Torchwood were all here, She and Luke were here, the Doctor and Rose were here. "That's left Earth rather lacking in defence," she said. "It's just UNIT left now." If they realized that, they'd pull the Brig out of retirement again, and onto active command. The poor man needed his retirement. "I wonder if that was this Planet's intent, or if it's just a coincidence."

Sarah Jane's observant gaze caught the wedding band dangling from the chain round Gwen's neck. "Your husband must be worried sick," she said. She thought back to what Luke had said about her not being gone. "Then again, he might not realize it."

"I just remember Ianto and I hanging onto light fixtures and well it was pretty exciting minus the fear over the Daleks" Gwen could smile at that part of the story. "We just lost coffee cups mostly but came out in one piece otherwise and I lost some dishes on the homefront" thinking of the mess at home.

"All 3 of us in terms of Torchwood, we lost 2 others before the Daleks invaded" Gwen shuddered inside. "But Martha is still home so maybe she's taking charge" she could only hope at this point. "But its a curious thing, all of us with ties to the Doctor being pulled here".

"Rhys may have no clue I'm even gone, he's my husband and we're newlyweds. Only been married 9 months now and remind me to tell you about my wedding sometime, there's parts only a few like Jack and Ianto would understand".

"Sorry about any bumpy ride," Sarah Jane said, amused at the idea of Torchwood hanging to light fixtures. "I was one of the ones helping pilot via TARDIS. It's hard work, moving a planet. They don't exactly make you sit exams for driving one." She grinned cheekily.

"I'm sorry to hear about your colleagues," Sarah said, and meant it. Losing your friends was always hard, and she'd seen her share of death over the years. "That would be Martha Jones, wouldn't it?" Sarah Jane remembered her from those last moments on the Dalek station and inside the TARDIS. She'd seemed to be a capable woman. "If she's taken charge, then I'm sure everything will be well in hand. But you're right, it is curious, all of us being here. I wonder if it's just a coincidence?" Sarah Jane looked out the window at the snowball fight. "They certainly seem to be enjoying themselves," she remarked, inclining her head toward the window and smiling. She couldn't see the faces of the people too clearly, so she was unsure if Luke had made it out to play or not.

Sarah Jane smiled as Gwen described her husband. "Congratulations, then," she said warmly. She wondered what could have happened at Gwen's wedding that only people like Captain Harkness and his lot would understand. "I never married myself. Never found the right man." She shrugged, as if to say it wasn't a big deal. "So, Cooper is your married name?"

Gwen's mug of coffee caught Sarah Jane's attention. A cup of tea would be quite nice right about now. She closed her eyes briefly, envisioning what she wanted and trying to think at the planet. She really had no clue how to do it, but a moment later, as she opened her eyes, one of the golems approached her, holding a steaming mug in its hands. She nodded at it and said thank you as she took it, but it turned and walked off without any acknowledgment. Curious thing. She sipped at her tea, delighted that it was neither too warm nor too cool, and turned back to Gwen.

"At least now the bumpy trip can be laughed about, only down side for us was the glass we had to clean up afterwards" Gwen was honest. "But a test should be a must!" seeing the humor in that part.

"Thanks and that would be Martha Jones, she came through for us during a non Dalek crisis and well I really like her" Gwen nodded. "Its a good mystery inside itself it seems: me,Jack and Ianto being together plus people with ties to the Doctor. Maybe a fluke but it may be something more too" as she took a sip of her coffee: the same blend Ianto brews every morning in the Hub. "Would have been in the fray but raspy throat talked me out of that idea" meaning the fight they were watching. "Has Luke met anyone around here yet?".

"Thanks and actually his last name is Williams, I never changed my name after the wedding" Gwen could smile. "One of these days I should write about what happened: 2 versions of the tale, those like Jack that get the whole thing and a tame version of wedding crashers for everyone else" as she sipped. "The coffee thing is striking: somehow this place knows about Ianto's coffee and how he brews it every morning and when I asked for coffee I found a cup full of the version he brews".

Somehow, she wasn't surprised to hear that Gwen knew Martha. Anyone who knew the Doctor ended up meeting, one way or another, lately. She smiled at the idea of Gwen out throwing snowballs. "Probably smartest. Yo don't want to risk your health on an unknown planet. I think I'm a bit too old for snow fights, sadly," she said. "But they're rather fun to watch." She took a sip of her tea. "Luke and I met the same girl when we first arrived, as it happens, a young inventor called Violet. She was quite helpful." She looked over at Gwen. "Have you met her?"

Never changed her name. Sarah Jane gave Gwen an appraising glance. She did seem the independent type. If Sarah had ever married, she'd have done the same as Gwen, and kept her maiden name. She chuckled at Gwen's mention of two versions of her wedding story. Whatever had happened must have been quite extraordinary if they'd had to invent a cover story.

"I was just thinking that about my tea," Sarah Jane said, looking down at her cup. "It's like the tea I brew at home. And your coffee is just like what Ianto brews at Torchwood?" She shook her head. "The Doctor thinks the planet is psychic, and that's how it's doing all of these things. Hearing about the coffee, and just being here for the past day or so, I'm starting to believe he's right."

"Not yet but I have spoken with Violet for quick periods, quite the science buff" Gwen had to smile. She admits,"Wish I could have been among the fray but I could hear Ianto's voice in my head talking me out of it" feeling a tinge of memory of Owen rush back. "But I saw one of the girls lug a cannon that shoots snowballs, now that is orignal".

"Exact same way Ianto brews it every morning, he is going to freak out since he would never tell me or Jack how he brews the coffee" Gwen nodded. "We joked about his coffee being a cure-all" thinking once more of Owen and how he joked that it should be a hangover cure. "What about your room? Mine is just like the flat back in Cardiff"

"She certainly seems that way," Sarah Jane said, recalling the girl's enthusiasm for inventing and her meticulous notes. She smiled as well, and looked back out at the snowball fight as Gwen mentioned the canon. "A canon? Now I've heard everything." She chuckled.

So the planet could brew her tea and Ianto's coffee, even though Ianto's recipe was apparently a personal secret. Definitely more evidence to support the "psychic planet" theory. And the rooms cemented the theory further. "Mine is just like my bedroom back home in Ealing. There are a few differences, things from my attic that are special to me, or that I find useful quite often have turned up on my bookshelf, and the desk from my study is against the wall. Bath's the same as well, only a bit tidier than the one at home." She grinned cheekily, then sighed. "The one thing the planet hasn't replicated for me, no matter how much I've thought about it, is Mr. Smith. Perhaps it figures that having Mr. Smith would be too easy." She looked at Gwen. "Have you lot asked for anything from your HQ, any high-tech whatsits that you weren't given?" She was curious as to the limits the planet might put on them all.

"I was cracking up, a cannon is an orignal idea for a snowball fight in terms of the firepower" Gwen could smile a bit more.

"The room is just like the flat but my desk is just like the Hub plus my notebook has the Torchwood symbol" she added. "I've found personal things like photos, some books and the like too" racking her brain for a second. "As for the tech I'll have to ask Ianto about that, he took charge of our archives and knows the most about the tech along with Jack" she admits. "But once I can talk to him I can make a private post to you with the info".

"It is at that," Sarah Jane agreed. She listened to Gwen's account of her circumstances here with interest. "Seems like you've got the same varied collection as I do," she remarked. At Gwen's offer to check with Ianto about the tech, Sarah Jane nodded eagerly. "Please. Perhaps that will give us more clues as to how this place operates."

She shifted in her chair, trying to get comfortable again. It was difficult for her to sit in one position for too long. She got restless. "How did you get involved with Torchwood, if you don't mind my asking?" She took another sip of her tea. "They don't exactly advertise in the Times, do they?"

"It may take a day or so but I'll make a post for you when I do get to talk to him" Gwen could promise that much. "As for how I landed in Torchwood its interesting, I fell into things while on a case as a cop and after Suzie killed herself I was asked to come onboard. According to most I remind the others of being human, of the effect of the things we see have on people" as she told her tale. "How about you in terms of finding Luke?"

Sarah Jane wondered what Gwen meant by "fell into things." Had she stumbled onto a Torchwood investigation, or into their base of operations while on duty? Or had she heard about it through the underground blogs and rumour mills that pertained to a case she'd been working on, and decided to see what she could find out on her own? It reminded Sarah Jane of her own rather shady beginnings with UNIT. But, since Gwen had been vague, she decided not to press the issue. She might have a good reason for not wanting to go into detail. That one of Torchwood's employees had killed herself meant that something perhaps not suited to light conversation had occurred.

She smiled at Gwen's description of herself, as told to her by her teammates. "Every team needs a human heart," she said. "Why do you think the Doctor likes traveling with us? It puts things into a perspective he's not used to dealing with. Even if ultimately he decides the human perspective isn't the best way to view the situation, he's at least considered things through a different lens, so to speak."

Sarah Jane took another sip of her tea as she though about how best to describe her meeting Luke. "Do you remember that pop that was rather popular a few months ago? Bubble Shock? Their main manufacturing plant was in Ealing, not too far from where I live. Bubble Shock was a front for aliens called the Bane, who were trying to take over the Earth. Luke was created by the Bane, and given the sum total of the intelligence and knowledge of each human who took the Bubble Shock factory tour. My new neighbor, Maria, found him and freed him from the Bane, and the three of us kept them from taking over. Luke had nowhere to go, no parents, so I decided to take him in. Mr. Smith drew up adoption papers for us to make it official." It was a fantastic story, and Sarah Jane knew that most people wouldn't believe it. But, Gwen was with Torchwood, and knew more about aliens than most people.

"Someone has to be the reminder that its ok to be human and to see the true effects of the things we see. Might as well be me in this case" Gwen nodded. "The Daleks scared me worse than the cannibals in the beacon beacons year before last, the case that was all over the news for a few weeks" she confessed. "But the Doctor would have loved Tosh, she was our computer genius and well I can still hear Owen smarting off inside my head" finally spekaing of her dead friends.

"I remember! Rhys was telling me how a few people he works with seemed to live on the stuff, I never could get a taste for it myself. He had said something about it simply going missing and driving people up the wall" Gwen could smile a little at the memory. "But that makes perfect sense, Luke had nowhere to go once the Bane was defeated and Mr.Smith just helped things along. But I love that you and Maria saved him and well people in our world do think alot alike" making a note to ask Jack about the Bane. "But fill me in about the Bane? Don't remember anyone around Torchwood speaking of that race before" she asked.

Sarah Jane shuddered at both the mention of the Daleks and the cannibals. She remembered reading about the mess in Brecon Beacons in the papers. Horrible stuff. She wondered if Gwen had been involved in it, or if she was just remembering the articles as well. She couldn't imagine being terrorised by cannibals. "It's funny," she remarked, taking another sip of her tea, "in all the times I've faced the Daleks, this last was the one that made me the most frightened." She shook her head. "Probably because I had the most to lose this time 'round."

Which was true. When she'd been young, it had just been her. Yes, Aunt Lavinia would have been sad if she'd never come home, but Sarah wouldn't have regretted her journey. Now, just last week, she could have lost her home, her son, her friends.... The stakes had been so much higher, and Davros, curse him, had delighted in it. He certainly hadn't changed at all from when she'd first met him.

She smiled a bit at Gwen's descriptions of her fallen friends. "I'm sure they were lovely people," she said. "I wish I could have met them."

Sarah Jane frowned. "I'm not sure that Torchwood would have noticed the Bane. It was after Canary Wharf, so London's base was gone, and you lot don't come to the city much, I gather. Too much to do with that Rift of yours. They were a surprisingly small operation for the scale of what they did. Very nasty. Put bits of their own DNA into the pop to enhance the mind control. In their true forms, they were very fast, and could stick to walls and ceilings, and were very strong. A Mrs. Wormwood was their leader. Well, that was her cover, at least." Sarah was just glad that she wouldn't have to deal with that woman or her Bane again. Of course, never say never with aliens, but surely that group of Bane at least was gone. With the explosion at the factory, they had to be.

"We got pulled into the Beacon Beacons mess, it was a trap. Long story short, I got shot among other things" Gwen went with the short version of what happened almost 2 years before. "But this time was different, mostly because of Jack,Ianto and Rhys. So soon after losing Tosh and Owen especially" since it had only been a few weeks since they were killed. "I really think you and Tosh would have gotten along great and well I can still hear Owen snarking off in my head" she muses.

"Makes sense actually, the rift is already doing something" she nodded. "But DNA in the pop is a new one" her dark eyes speaking volumes. "We just have the weevils, mostly your average local pain in the necks and well we do have a dinosaur as the hub pet" able to smile at that part.

A concerned look crossed Sarah Jane's face. To have gone through that horrible ordeal in Brecon Beacons, and to be able to talk about it so casually, Gwen had to be made of some pretty strong stuff. While Sarah herself had never faced cannibals, she'd had her share of adventures that she'd been sure would break her, only to come out stronger in the end. She was glad Gwen seemed to share her attitude in this way. She nodded in sympathy as the other woman spoke of her friends. "I'm sure I would have," she said, smiling.

The Rift in Cardiff did sound fascinating. Perhaps when they were able to get home, she'd pop across for a visit and see what exactly went on there. If she could secure a promise of good behaviour from the captain, she might even bring Luke. Having Mr. Smith give her updates on it wasn't the same as actually seeing it for herself, after all.

"A dinosaur?" Sarah Jane echoed. "I hope it's not left over from Operation Golden Age. What sort is it?" She wondered if UNIT knew there was a dinosaur roaming around Cardiff. She was sure the Brigadier wouldn't be too pleased, and Mike Yates might decide never to visit Cardiff again. Perhaps she wouldn't mention it to Mike, then. Too many unpleasant memories.

"Myfanwy is a pteranodon and she's actually the Hub pet!" Gwen had to smile now. "She's actually pretty friendly once she knows you and she actually saved the day a couple of times" letting Sarah Jane peek into the lighter side of things via a couple of cute stories.

"No idea how she found us but she stuck around"

The last time Sarah Jane had seen a live pteranodon, it was swooping at her like a bat in a car park. And it had been a baby pteranodon. "Pet?" she echoed, shaking her head slightly. She took a sip of her tea. It was growing cold. "It's tame, then? My goodness."

She glanced back to the window. "Looks like that snowball fight is dying down a bit," she remarked. She could see a few people breaking off from the game and heading toward the residences. "I didn't see Luke out there."

"She's tame as can be but she's also a mean fighter when the need comes up" Gwen had to smile. "Its strange but its not the same without hearing her calls through the hub since the echo was rather soothing at times" she mused. "No sign of Luke, he must be nosing around and maybe he's met some of the other teens floating around?" she offered.
