Day 28
Who: Andy Gallagher, George Lass, Illyana Rasputin and OTA
When: Day 28, evening
What: Andy makes good on his offer to meet up for video games with George
Rating: TBA, but probably PG-13 to R for language
Status: Incomplete

After writing in his journal about going to meet George in the Entertainment Room, Andy grinned. It was kind of cool being able to write in the little book and know that everyone could see it, even if it did get him into a small spot of trouble before. Convenient and easy.

"Hey, room, I need some munchies...I plan on being down there for a while," he announced to no one as he headed into the bathroom to take a shower. George might not be interested...but she might be, too, and Andy had no idea. Might as well look and smell nice, at least. Hey, you never know.

Hopping out of the shower and getting dressed, Andy was pleased and not entirely surprised to see a few bags of chips, some packaged cookies, and some cheese sticks alongside a six pack of beer and another of soda waiting on his mattress. "Thanks," he said, again to no one, as he stuffed the goodies into a backpack which was also on the mattress, even if he hadn't asked for it.

It took a few minutes to get his bearings, because he'd never really looked for the Entertainment Room (he'd just somehow known it was there), but once he figured out where he was and where he was headed, Andy was well on his way. When he got to the room, it was still empty and, figuring he'd given such a vague time in the journal that maybe no one had shown just yet, he made himself comfortable on one of the sofas and turned on the Nintendo Wii. The television came to life all on its own, it would seem.

Strapping the remote around his wrist, Andy decided to test his fitness on the Wii Sports game while he waited...since that was the only game he'd ever played and was familiar enough not to look like an idiot playing.

Illyana had slept late, enjoying the lie-in after the party the day before. She'd sort of lazed around, which was unusual for her, although she had braved the heavy snow to go and check on the snowman army. They would end up buried alive, but there was really nothing she could do about it. It would be silly to use her magic to protect them from the elements, and using her power frivolously wasn't something she ever did. She'd just have to rebuild later, when the snow died down.

Most of the day she'd spent curled up in her room reading, but she'd noticed Andy's offer of video games and decided to take him up on it. He'd seemed pretty nice in writing, and she didn't know too many people yet. So after a late dinner, she'd asked a golem how to get to the entertainment room, and it had very kindly escorted her over. She patted it on the head as it turned to leave. In a weird way, it reminded her of some of the lesser demons in Limbo that Belasco, and, by extension, she, had kept as servants. That shouldn't have been a comforting thought, but it was.

She stepped inside the room and looked around. The only person there was standing with his back to her, in front of a television, but a far more high-tech one than had been at the mansion at home. He was holding a little device in one hand and moving around like he was going to hit something with that hand. On the screen, a little figure was mimicking his actions, only it was holding a baseball bat and swinging at a ball. He was dressed pretty casually, which made Illyana glad she'd opted for more casual attire as well.

"Hello," she said as she stepped further into the room. "Are you Andy?"

Well, bowling was a no-go, because no matter how hard he tried, Andy couldn't get the ball to stop hooking to the left. "God, fitness is gonna age me at, like, 50 because I suck at bowling. Lame," he muttered to himself and fixed his arm up as the game changed. Baseball. Andy was good at the baseball game; maybe he could offset the bad bowling with some good baseball and end up with a more reasonable fitness age.

"Home run, bitch, that's right," he said, smirking as he lambasted one of the balls with a hard flick of his wrist.

Then he heard someone say hello and ask whether he was Andy. Pausing the game, he looked over his shoulder. "That's me, are you..." Andy turned to face her and raised his eyebrows. "Illyana? Was that it? Am I pronouncing it right?"

Well, she certainly wasn't George, because he'd met George in person and Illyana had been the only person who had responded to his invite, so logically, it was her. He held out a hand to her. "Nice to meet you in person," he added with a grin.

George had gotten lost looking for the Entertainment Room - truth be told she hadn't been bothered to find it before that night, which made her late for her game night with Andy and 80's girl.
Once she found the room and went inside it, she saw Andy and another blonde girl - she supposed that was Illyana - and walked over to them.

"Hi." She said simply, wondering whether to smile or not, noticing in the meantime that Andy was playing baseball on the Wii. It looked fun, though George had never tried it.

Illyana smiled. "Exactly right," she said, referring to his pronunciation of her name. She offered him a hand to shake. "Nice to meet you too." Different than she'd imagined, but not in a bad way.

She turned as another voice said hello. "Hello," she said, offering a hand to the newcomer as well. "I'm Illyana. And you are?" She hadn't met the young woman before, but she looked friendly.

"So, everyone is apparently going to cream me in video games, since I'm working on a twenty-year handicap," she remarked. She hated losing, but she was looking forward to spending time with some "normal" people and getting to act like a "normal" person again. It was rare she could visit with other people near to her own age that she didn't see every day.

"Cool," Andy said, smiling, as he nodded. At least he wasn't butchering her name. He'd only seen it in writing, so...

He heard George and looked over Illyana's voice. "Hey George," he said with a smirk. He was glad that she'd come. She'd said she would, but Andy hadn't been sure she really would make the effort, since she hadn't seemed overly excited about, well, anything. "George, Illyana; Illyana, George," he introduced the two women to one another.

Illyana remarked that she was going to get creamed and Andy shook his head, holding out the remote to her. "Nah, unless George is really good at it...this console is pretty much brand new where I come from. Literally has only been on the market just under a year; I couldn't afford one and wouldn't have had anywhere to put it, anyway. A friend had one, but I only played a couple of times," he assured her.

"Oh! Ladies, I come bearing gifts," he said quickly as if he'd just remembered and crossed the room to grab his backpack, holding it up. "I brought provisions. Beer, soda, snackage. Oh, yes, yes, I did," he said proudly.

George smiled at Illyana. "Hi." She was going to say her name, but then Andy introduced them, and that seemed pointless.

"Nah don't worry about it, I couldn't afford it either, I'll be playing for the first time..." She told Illyana and Andy. She appreciated Andy's thoughtfullness at having brought stuff to drink and eat, though she wasn't big on beer. But then again, she had never been big on anything.

"How very thoughtful." She said, taking a packet of chips. "So, are we doing this or what?" George was a little bit excited now.

George? Well, her dance teacher's name was Stevie. Illyana grinned at her. "Nice to meet you, George," she said. Then, she shook her head. "You're both probably going to beat me anyway, even if it's a new thing." She looked at the console, and at the little thing Andy had strapped around his wrist. "No wires?" she asked, trying to see how the thing worked.

Her eyes lit up as Andy mentioned snacks. "As thoughtful as my brother," she said as she took a packet of chips and a can of soda. She was tempted to try a beer, but she was still very much underage, and didn't know how it would affect her. Maybe once she was more comfortable around people, she would try sneaking one and seeing what happened.

"So...how do we play this game?" she asked, looking from George to Andy to the screen. The lack of joystick was a bit unnerving to her, but she figured that if she could survive the danger room, this had to be all right.

Andy noticed right away that the girls went for the chips...but stayed away from the beer. "I didn't roofie them or anything, guys," he laughed.

"No, this console has wireless remotes instead of game controllers like most," Andy replied to Illyana. "That's why it's so damn cool."

He looked over at George. "Yeah, we're doin' it," he replied, making his way back toward the console and picking up two more remotes. He held one out to each of the girls and smirked.

"They've got tons of games in here, but I figure we should start small, especially if we're all new to it," he said. "I'm okay at the Wii Sports, but that's the only game I've ever played," he admitted. "First you guys gotta make Miis, though," he went on as he nodded toward the overly large sofa before rounding it and dropping down in the middle of it.

...well, shit, if he was hanging out with two hot chicks, he was damn well sitting between them.

He pulled up the Mii Creator with his remote and waited for the girls to join him. "Whoever has the remote that's player two," he said, holding up his own and pointing to the bottom of it where his first dot was lit up, "can go first. The Mii is just a little dude...or in your case, dudette, that becomes your player. So, like, instead of Mario or Luigi or whatever," he said, figuring George would know what he meant and maybe Illyana would, too. Depended, he thought, on when in the 80s she was from.

Illyana asked how to play and Andy looked over at her. "Runs on batteries," he said, nodding at her remote. "It has a motion sensor, I think, that links to that little strip on top of the TV. So, you just move like you're really doing the activity and the Mii will do the same thing," he explained. "A little bit like virtual reality only not quite as realistic," he added.

George smiled at the TV, and at Andy and Illynana. It could be fun. Why wouldn't it be fun?

She tried to control the controller - well that was new - and with a little difficulty, she finally mastered it enough to make a little toon of herself.

"There. That's me." She said, with an accomplished smile. "Are we bowling? 'Cause I can bowl. Kinda."

Illyana wandered around to the couch and plopped herself down on the left. She took the remote from Andy and looked at it, trying to figure out exactly what it did. It would be right up Doug's alley, she knew. Well, since he couldn't ever enjoy it, she'd have to do it for him. Better way to remember her late friend than to dwell on the Ani-Mator, definitely.

She watched George for clues as to how the remote actually worked, and when it was her turn, she made a little computer doll that looked roughly like her. She gave it the blue and yellow color scheme of the New Mutants' uniforms for a bit of whimsy.

"This isn't as hard as it looked at first," she remarked. It was definitely harder than Donkey Kong, but mostly because the remote was more sensitive than a joystick. It was sort of like a giant joystick, and the buttons were on the stick itself. It might not be too bad.

She looked over at George and grinned. "Bowling? I can bowl kinda as well." At least some hobbies seemed to have lasted past the 80s.

Andy grinned at the way the pointing finger trembled as it skittered across the screen until the girls got the hang of the remote. Good. He wasn't the only one who had that problem, then. It made him feel better, since he'd been acting the expert when, really, he was far from it.

When the girls were finished making the miniature animated versions of themselves, Andy looked back and forth between the two of them. They wanted to bowl? Of all the damn sports, they wanted to do the one he sucked at most. He deflated a little.

"Man, I suck at bowling, you guys are gonna kick my butt," he laughed, deciding that being a poor sport was definitely not going to endear anyone to spend more time with him in the future.

Still. Two against one; majority. Andy stood up again and moved the pointing finger around on the screen and went through the appropriate menu screens until he'd selected the bowling game. He was still player one, so instead of watching the other two go first and maybe feeling better that they had perhaps the same problem he did with Wii bowling, he had to go first and set an example...of sorts.

He took a few steps away from the couch so that he wouldn't unintentionally smack one of them in the face as he moved and then drew his arm back, pressing the necessary buttons, and swung it forward again, his Mii releasing the ball. Which, of course, hooked to the right and landed in the gutter. Andy's face went red and he made a conscious effort not to swear as the game set up his second turn. He adjusted the pointer to start to the far left of the screen and mimed throwing the bowling ball again, only marginally relieved to see the ball knock three of the furthest right pins down.

"Told ya I suck," he laughed, stepping back and dropping down on the couch between them again.

George took the remote from Andy again, not as sure of her bowling capacities as she previously had been. This had nothing to do with actual bowling, the weight, the texture and definitely the shape of what she needed to play with were completely different things.

Still, she tried her best, but the precise moment in which she was supposed to release the button was far from when she actually released it. It seemed to take some movement - again nothing to do with a bowling ball. The same thing that happened to Andy, happened to her, too.

"Oh. Great." She said, rolling her eyes. "I suppose it takes practice..."

Smiling faintly, she handed the control over to Illyana and sat down next to Andy.

Illyana watched the two attempts at bowling carefully, confused as to what exactly was going on. It was very different from the gaming that she was used to. She took the remote from George with a smirk. "Let's see if we can make it three for three," she said.

She stared at the buttons for a moment, trying to figure out which one was the release. The first time she tried to throw a ball, she pushed it way too soon, and it ended up a gutter ball. The second time, she was farther over than she'd expected, but she managed to release the ball so that it actually went down the lane. One pin on the very far right edge fell over. But it was better than none. "I actually hit something!" she said, half in amazement. "This is gonna take a while to get used to," she said as she turned and offered the remote to Andy.

Andy felt marginally better that neither of the girls seemed to be having much more luck than he had. Although, he had to give Illyana credit since she'd been from a time when video games were controlled by joysticks. She was doing pretty well, considering, he thought.

"Nice work!" he praised, grinning at Illyana.

"I think just like anything, it takes practice," he thought aloud in response to George as he took the remote back from Illyana to have another turn. He did a bit better that time, picking up a spare.

Holding the remote back out to George, he grinned. "After this, I think we're gonna have to play a game we can all play at once. There's gotta be some..."

"Nice!" She told Illyana after she'd been the first to actually get the ball rolling.

George then watched Andy, and when she took the remote from him, she did it with absolutely no confidence, but she tried anyway.

She concentrated really hard on her hand movement and though it wasn't a strike, at least the ball didn't end in the gutter. It hit a few of the front pins.

"Well, that's not bad." She said smiling. Then, she decided to try to have a beer. Though the taste was dreadful, it was really fresh, so she took a big sip. "Ahhhh, ew. Here." She handed Illyana the remote.

Illyana grinned at the praise the others gave her. It was a small victory, learning how to wield the remote, but the friendly words reminded her of the New Mutants at home. Dani and Sam would have been happy for her as well.

"Good one!" she said as Andy managed a spare. Watching him and George, she was starting to figure out how to hold her wrist and how to move so the remote would work. She watched George manage to knock down a few pins. "Excellent!"

She raised an eyebrow as George handed her the remote. "Ahhhh" and "ew" weren't usually sounds she heard referring to the same thing at the same time by the same person. More reason to stick to the soda. "Thanks," she said as she took the remote. She turned and faced the television screen, concentrating more than the game probably warranted. She twisted her wrist slightly and then swung her hand forward, hitting the button when her hand was about level with her belly button. The ball released and went sideways -too much twist - hitting a few of the side pins on the left. She grinned. At least she'd hit them. On her next swing, she managed another pin, bringing her total for the round to four.

"By the tenth frame, I might hit them all," she said, smirking, as she passed the remote to Andy. She grabbed a handful of chips on her way back to the couch.

"Hey, there ya go, champ," Andy joked as George took a beer. He laughed when she vocalized her distaste for it. "Ah, it's not so bad. It's an acquired taste. Don't be a wimp," he teased, winking.

George had the hang of the game, now, and as he watched Illyana, it looked to him like she was kind of figuring it out, too. Great, in no time they'd be pulling off strikes and he'd be cursing over seven-ten spares he couldn't pick up.

"Tenth frame? Psh, you're startin' to clean 'em up already. Give it two or three more and you'll be kicking our asses; you catch on quick!" Andy replied to Illyana as he took the remote from her.

As he readied himself to take his turn, Andy's eyes scanned over the other games there. "No shit, Mario Kart?! Are you kidding me? I bet that shit has steering wheels and everything!" he breathed before taking his turn and pumping his fist with triumph as he got a strike. "YES! About time, man!" he said more to himself than to the girls. Turning back, he held the remote out to George. "You're up," he announced unnecessarily with a smirk.

George smirked at Andy as she took the remote.

"I take it you're not too happy about playing bowling?" She asked, moving in front of the television. It wasn't special, her game, but it worked. A few more pins this time. She wondered if there were any games where the character had a baseball bat and kicked everyone else's ass. If there was, she'd have to try it sometime.

"Here you go, Illyana." She said, handing it over. "Before he forces us to play something else out of embarrassment."

Illyana had doubts about kicking everyone's ass by the tenth frame. She'd really just be happy to not do embarrassingly horribly. So she made sure to watch her opponents carefully when it wasn't her turn.

She smirked when George handed her the remote. "He wouldn't," she said as she rose and headed over to the TV. "That would be admitting defeat. Most men I know don't like doing that."

Even if 'Berto were the worst player at a game like this, he'd still play to the end. He was the most stubborn male she knew, and didn't lose gracefully. She snickered, thinking of 'Berto playing something like this, as she threw her first ball. Less wrist-twisting this time, and the ball went more-or-less down the side in a straight line, knocking out four pins. She smirked again.

"This isn't so bad," she said, taking her second shot. This one went too wide and ended up in the gutter, causing Illyana to scowl. "Then again...." She turned to Andy and tossed the control at him. "Heads up!" she said.

"Bowling's not really my thing," Andy admitted to George. "Out of all the sports on this game, I'd pick baseball over bowling any day, but it's not so bad." He grinned at her.

When Illyana took the remote and made a remark about him not quitting the game because it'd be admitting defeat, Andy laughed. "Wise words," he joked. "I might suck at this game, but I'm no quitter," he added with a smirk.

He caught the remote easily when Illyana tossed it to him and took his turn, managing to pick up another spare, although it had been kind of a cop out when one of the pins he'd actually hit had rolled around in a circle and nudged one that he'd missed over. He couldn't complain, though.

Andy held the remote out to George. "After this game, we'll have to try somethin' else I don't suck at," he said, only half joking.

George smirked, one eyebrow lifted, as she took the remote from Andy again.

She quickly played her turn - not so bad, but not great, by any means - and turned around, giving Illyana the remote again. "You're still too good at this." She told her, trying hard not to spew as she took another sip of her cold, cold beer.
Good thing the planet kept the drinks chilled, at least.

Then, George turned to Andy. "Well, what do you have in mind? What don't you suck at?" She smirked, sort of guessing what his answer might be.

Illyana took the remote from George and played her round. This time, she managed five pins in two throws. That was definitely an improvement over the last frame. "You've got to be a fast learner at my school," she said, smirking at George's comment. "Slow reflexes mean very sore muscles after workout sessions." She wondered if any Danger Room tech had been an influence on this new game system. The VR-aspect wasn't quite as advanced as some of the stuff at school, but it looked to work the same, at least to her unskilled eye. Doug would have known, or Kitty.

She tossed Andy the remote when she was finished and tilted her head to the side slightly. "Yeah, what exactly did you have in mind?" she asked.

"Fast learner you are, then," Andy replied approvingly as he took the remote from her. She was doing pretty damn well for someone who was used to the sort of graphics and controllers he remembered from his early childhood. She was probably a friggen pro at shit like Pong and Pac Man, he thought.

Andy took a deep breath and wound his arm back to take his turn. It was the tenth frame and he tried very hard - although he failed - not to let out the slew of profanity sitting on the tip of his tongue after he couldn't pull of a spare when it really counted. He held the remote out to George. "Baseball," he replied. "Or we can try that racing game. I bet we all suck equally at that," he joked.

George shrugged, and played her tenth frame without that much of a soul. Still, she knocked back a considerable amount of pins, and grinned. She handed the remote to Illyana.

"Oh. Mario Kart? Is that what you mean? Because that game is shit." She said, sitting back down on the couch.

Last frame. Illyana took the remote and tried to make it count. First throw was a gutter ball, and she scowled at the remote. The final shot scraped four pins down as it careened toward the gutter. She cursed in Russian, then tossed Andy the remote.

"What's this Mario cart game?" she asked, still slightly annoyed at her less-than-stellar final frame. She downed a good half of her soda to try and calm down. She plopped back down on the couch, and glanced between George and Andy. "Isn't Mario the guy who has to rescue the princess from the demonic turtle guy?"

"I haven't played it on the Wii, but yeah that's the one," Andy replied to George. "Nice shot, by the way," he added with a smile. "I don't know if it's the same or if it's different," he went on, "but I'm kinda itchin' to give it a try..."

His attention from George was torn away when Illyana said something in a different language. He laughed. "Did you just say something naughty?" he joked.

Illyana asked who Mario was and Andy looked over at George. "Dude, she's for real old school," he said, grinning as he turned to look back at Illyana. "Yeah, King Koopa or Bowser or whatever he was called back then, that's the one. Only, the closer to my time you get from your time, the more games there are that use the Mario characters in a completely different way than that," he said. "Shit, there's, like, Mario Tennis - oh man, did you ever play the virtual Gameboy?" he asked, turning back to George as a wave of nostalgia washed over him.

He looked back at Illyana. "Uh Mario Tennis, Mario Party...Super Smash Brothers..." he went on as if he'd never interrupted himself. "Tons of stuff. The Mario Brothers aren't just for saving Princess Toadstool anymore," he finished with a smirk.

"Mario? Mario was the shit way back when. Sonic, too, but Mario, dude." George grinned, and for the first time in what seemed like forever, she remembered her childhood fondly. It felt weird to her that Illyana, who for all intents and purposes seemed their age, didn't know the phenomenon in the same light she and Andy did. "I played a whole bunch of Mario shit, I don't even remember anymore!"

George was grinning, and having fun. Who knew after all that time she would finally smile about her childhood? After all, it all seemed like a blurry ball of nothingness every time she thought about it.

Were she a more self-conscious girl, Illyana might have blushed that Andy caught her out on swearing. But she wasn't. "I might have," she said slyly. "But I might have said something completely innocuous as well. I might have said 'the chips are tasty'." She smirked to let both him and George know she'd said nothing of the sort.

She was glad that she'd made the right connection regarding Mario. She only knew because of some of the kids in Salem Center, really. Doug had had a system, of course, and she'd played once or twice, when they had time, but never seriously and never with a mind to think knowledge of it would come in handy one day. She had no clue if it was Bowser or Koopa that Mario fought, or what the Princess was called. But she had no clue what "Sonic" was.

"Was Sonic like Mario?" she asked George. "Something for the home video games, or something for the arcade?"

"Oh man, yeah, fuckin' Sonic the Hedgehog, yes!" Andy said excitedly, gesticulating his excitement out with his hands. "God Sonic was cool," he added with a grin.

Looking back at Illyana, he caught the sly tone in her voice and the smirk on her face. "Suuure ya did," he teased when she suggested she might have said something innocuous. He winked.

"Sonic was, uh...yeah, kinda like Mario only not a person; a hedgehog. And he wasn't for Nintendo, he was for...uh, shit, Sega Genesis, right, George? Jesus, it's been a long time," he laughed.
