WHO: Marcus, Anakin, Alex Drake; Hatter and victims once we all arrive at the ballroom.
WHAT: Rescuing Tonks, Emma, and Sidney
WHEN: Day 17
WHERE: Eventually in the ballroom
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete

Marcus gripped his Minbari fighting pike tightly as he strode hurriedly through the resort. Somewhere in this place Tonks was a prisoner, and Marcus was willing to bet she wasn't happy about it. As he raced to find her, he wondered to himself why he was in such a hurry, since it always seemed as though her magic made her more capable than he. Something about the way she had screamed, though, had sunk deep into Marcus. He knew that she would not have screamed that way if she had had any confidence in her own ability to repel her attackers.

That morning, the Ranger had been meditating on a bluff overlooking the resort. In the early light the ruddy earth had smelled good, and his mind had been quite clear when the shriek of his abducted friend had come up to him on the morning breeze. His calm state shattered, Marcus had leapt to his feet and raced down through the vineyard. The voice had sounded like it was coming from the vicinity of the dorms, so he ran there first. Finding no trace of either the witch or a struggle, he had wracked his brain attempting to deduce whither she might have been taken. Not coming up with anything obvious, he had realized that all his guesses came to the same end. He couldn't figure out where she was unless he figured out who had taken her. Since he had had no clues to the solution of either mystery, Marcus had decided the only thing to do was to search the entire resort. If nothing else, he was likely to find both Tonks and her abductor in the same place.

So it was that the Ranger found himself rushing about madly, desperately opening doors and crossing rooms. He considered it unlikely that the kidnapper's hideout would be in the wilderness beyond the resort's environs; therefore, the first place to look was in the resort buildings themselves. He had already been to the dining hall and the pool with no luck.

Troubling dreams had interrupted his sleep until Anakin finally just gave in to the inevitable and got out of bed. There was a disturbance in the Force…he felt it all around him…as a Jedi Knight, he needed to be out there identifying and fixing the problem. First he would have a hot shower and a mug of this beverage they call ‘coffee’.

As he was in the shower, enjoying the feel of the heated water cascading over his body, Anakin sensed…felt a great evil…with ties to several lesser evils…he knit his brow in concentration, trying to make sense of it…he felt the anguish of victims....nothing specific enough to be identifiable though and this frustrated him…and it was gone. “DAMN!”, he growled, banging the shower wall. The young Jedi was angry that he had such little control over this power of his…it only served to prove that Master Obi Wan was right. He did need more training before calling himself a master…then again, how many of the others had the gift of prophesy?

Drying, dressing and grabbing his light saber, Anakin left his room and headed out into the hall. He would try to open himself to the Force to see if he could detect anything.

This was when he caught sight of a man in some sort of uniform, rushing about the halls…he carried a fighting staff and had a noble look about him. Anakin surmised he must be some form of law enforcement officer…Good, there are others on the job!. Hurrying towards the man Anakin called, “Excuse me, sir! Excuse me! If you are a Law Officer, I, too, have sensed some great evil going on here. I am Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight, and you can count on me for assistance”.

Alex hadn't heard a thing, and having no special powers ta all, she hadn't felt anything different that morning either. As with every other day, Alex was focused on how she was going to get home. This planet didn't have all te obvious links and clues that the 1980s had had, and so she wasn't exactly doing too well. She had spent the morning in the library trying to find some newspapers or anything that would link her with the outside world, but it wasn't to be found. Perhaps something had happened to her mind - it wasn't making the connections anymore.

And so, as she wandered through the resort with a sick, heavy feeling in her stomach, it was only natural that she picked up on the very words she longed to hear. Law Officer. Her eyebrows raised and a small, self-satisfied smile spread across her lips. "Ah, there we go," she said to herself, spinning on her heels to find the source of the voice.

"Hello there!" she called out, moving quickly to meet the two gentlemen. "Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear. My name is Alex Drake," she explained, reaching into her pocket to produce the police badge she still carried with her. "Detective Inspector Alex Drake," she went on, holding the ID out for them both to see. "I don't know what a Jedi Knight is, but I don't suppose that matters much. I think it could be vitally important that I assist you with.... well, whatever it is that you need assistance with," she said, not bothering to explain why it would be important. It didn't matter much.

Marcus had been striding purposefully down the hall when he had heard the young man call out to him. He paused and turned around, taking the risk that this conversation would be more boon then hindrance to him. The young man looked fit and was dressed in a garment not so different in purpose, Marcus suspected, from that of the Ranger, though clearly from a different culture.

"A Law Officer? Well, I suppose so, though I'm really more of a Good Officer, when it comes down to it." He held out his hand for Anakin to shake. "Anakin? Good to meet you. My name is Marcus Cole. I am seeking a friend of mine that was abducted. I fear the evil you sensed was the intent of her kidnappers. I am grateful for your assistance, though I have to admit, I have no clue to where she has been taken."

As Marcus finished greeting Anakin, another do-gooder came up to them. This one was a woman, and she, too, appeared to be a "law officer". Certainly, that was what it claimed on her badge. Marcus marveled for a moment that these two were such ardent supporters of his before they even knew his purpose. Perhaps it was fate, agreeing with the righteousness of his cause, or perhaps it was just that the way he had been walking had looked confident.

"Nice to meet you Detective Inspector Drake. I'm Ranger Marcus Cole. If I may speak for my new companion for a moment, we would appreciate your assistance. We're seeking evil kidnappers. You wouldn't happen to know anything about them, would you?"

“It is an honor to meet you Good Officer Marcus Cole”, Anakin took the Ranger’s hand and shook it firmly, “I believe your friend’s predicament is but one incident causing a disturbance in The Force”, his face darkened, “I sense a great evil at work”.

As they were talking another joined their ranks…it was a woman, apparently a law officer, another world apart from Good Officer Cole. She produced an identifying credential, which he glanced at briefly, but really meant nothing to him. He nodded respectively at her after Marcus had spoken to her and introduced himself, “Detective Inspector Alex Drake, It’s an honor. I’m Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight”.

Turning to the Ranger, Anakin asked, “So, tell us anything about your friend we should know and where you have already looked, sir. I’m assuming you are looking inside for a reason?”, he looked expectantly into the man’s eyes, “…usually a person who abducts another takes them far away from where they were originally abducted…sooooo, you are looking in this building for a good reason…”, he paused and waited for the Ranger to speak.

"Evil kidnappers?" she repeated, giving a slow nod. "That sounds like just the sort of thing I should be helping you with. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any evidence of a kidnapping. Who has been kidnapped? Do you know why? Any suspects?" she asked, taking care to space her questions out and not become flustered. It was clear that she was experienced in dealing with such matters, and she was keen to get as much information as possible before blundering into a situation unprepared. If this was a test of her strength, she was going to give it her all.

She turned to Anakin and gave him a smile, although it couldn't exactly be described as warm. "Yes, good point. Although is there really anywhere here that could be described as far away? I haven't been here very long, but it seems like quite a small area, unless they've taken the victim into the desert, but of course that would put their own safety at risk as well and may not serve their purposes.." she went on, shaking her head as if to stop herself babbling. "Sorry, your turn!" she said with a self-depreciating laugh.

Marcus smiled. At least he hadn't been sent unintelligent, unthinking assistance. Both of these people seemed keen, but also prudently critical. Fortunately, he had no intention of being dishonest with them. He answered Inspector Drake's question first.

"Well, quite besides Sir Anakin's sensing of a "disturbance" in the "Force", I was aural witness to a kidnapping of my friend Miss Tonks. I heard her cry out while I was out and about, and I immediately dropped what I was doing to investigate. I'm afraid I have no idea who the villain or villains are nor why they have done it."

He turned to Anakin. Alex had followed the Jedi Knight in his shrewd question, but it was the young warrior that had been the most suspicious about it. Marcus knew it was important to show him perfect honesty in order to dispel any doubts he may have about the Ranger's integrity.

"It's true what you say, my good knight; kidnappers generally take their victims as far away as possible from the site of the abduction, but, as Inspector Drake points out, there isn't a lot of ground they can cover before they hit the desert. To be perfectly honest, I have no idea where they have gone. I have no clues and I am not tracking any trail. I am looking inside the main building because, frankly, I had to start somewhere, and I thought to quickly go through the buildings I was familiar with before moving on. I'd hate to scour the desert only to find out they had a secret room in the basement of the resort."

Anakin listened carefully to every word and nodded when spoken to…these people were both his elders and he would prove to Obi Wan, should he some how ever know, that he could listen and be patient with his elders.

Nodding his head to the female Law Officer, Anakin replied respectfully, “I must apologize to you, Detective Inspector Drake…”, he turned to Marcus, “…and you, Good Officer Cole. I was not careful or precise with my words. It’s important in a situation like this to be exact. ‘Faraway’ is where kidnappers take their victims normally. I realize we have some boundaries here, but I’ve done some exploring. There are mountains here and I spotted several caves, easily defensible. There is a dense forest…hills and rock cliffs out by the hot springs. However”, he looked at Marcus again, “…if you heard her, sir, I imagine it was wise to begin here”.

Standing back from them, he removed his light saber from his belt and activated it; the saber HUMMMed to life tall and brilliant blue. “Do we split up to cover more ground quickly or stay together to make a stronger fighting force against unknown odds?”.

Alex frowned deeply at these words - a disturbance in the force? What did that even mean? Did he mean the police force? She understood the rest of the statement, however, and nodded thoughtfully along with Anakin's reasoning.

"Okay, when did you hear this cry? Was it recently? That might give us an idea of how much ground they could have covered," she insisted. "Do you know if Ms Tonks had any enemies, Officer Cole? Anyone who might wish her harm? Is there anything special about her that might attract a kidnapper? Could they want a ransom, for example?" she asked; she was used to firing questions at people, and she was sure that as a 'good officer', Marcus would understand her method.

She quickly forgot about her questions as Anakin produced a lightsaber. "Goodness, that's quite an instrument," she observed, the innuendo not lost on her. "I think perhaps we ought to stick together for now; we have no way to call each other for back-up and we wouldn't want to put one person at a great risk. Once we have an idea of where she has been taken, we can consider different points of entry. Does that sound good to you both?" she asked. It was clear she was used to being in charge of these sorts of situations, but she did at least have to decency to ask their opinion on it, even if admittedly it was mostly a rhetorical question.

Marcus nodded quickly but graciously to Anakin, noting his polite deference. He also noted the large, energetic sword he produced. The young man seemed eager for combat. At least he handled it in a way that made him look very comfortable and capable with it. Alex's rapid questions did not bother him at all. As a member of a para-military organization, he was accustomed to that method as well.

"To answer your questions, Inspector, I heard her cry almost half-an-hour ago; No, I don't know of any enemies Tonks has made here -- she seems to have made many friends, however; I know of no one who wishes her harm; yes, she has the special quality of being a witch who can perform real magic; and, I don't know who the kidnapper would expect to pay a ransom, since Tonks isn't here with a husband or family.

I agree with Inspector Drake that we should stick together. I have already been through the dining hall and the kitchens, as well as the pool and change-rooms. I was just going to head down this hall and check out the library, games-room, and ballroom."

Marcus was glad the three of them were already getting on to making a plan. He felt certain that time was of the essence in this type of search, and he was eager to get going.

“No known enemies and no one to pay ransom to…”, Anakin appeared worried, “…I worry that your friend may have fallen into the hands of some sick thrill seeker, Officer”, he addressed Marcus. His eyes shifted up and down the hallways, “I fear for her safety and believe time is of the essence”.

Holding the light saber at readiness, close to his body, the young Jedi moved to the right of Marcus, “At your command, I think we should continue along the path you began until we find her or have exhausted all options within the complex, Officer Cole”. Turning to Alex, he nodded, “I’ll take right flank, if that’s agreeable. Do you have a weapon, Inspector Drake? I can provide you with one or cover you if things get out of hand”. Anakin meant no disrespect with his offer. There were many brilliant diplomats he respected that did not carry weapons. He could tell by the Inspector’s questions that she had a keen mind for detective work…if she wasn’t a warrior, he would find no shame in that.

Standing off to Marcus’ right, Anakin gave the light saber a whirl, his youthful impatience showing a bit, “I’m ready, Officer Cole, at your word”.

"A witch?" she repeated, her voice going a little higher than normal at the question. So, she was on a different planet, the idea of a witch shouldn't have surprised her all that much, but considering she was still deluded by believing she was stuck inside her own psyche, the idea of a witch was rather alarming. At least the majority of her thoughts had been within the realm of reality up until now. Still, a mission was a mission, and the witch part could wait until later.

"Okay, half an hour isn't too long, at least. I'd say we have a good chance of finding her safe if we move quickly," she said, nodding along with Anakin's suggestion that time was of the essence. "We can walk and talk," she agreed. "Oh, I'm armed, thankyou," she explained, reaching to produce her gun - luckily she'd come from the 1980's where the use of firearms within the police force wasn't so strictly controlled - it had pretty much been the first thing Gene had authorised her for, being of a more old-fashioned mind... but she was grateful, now.

"Right, let's fire up the Quattro," she suggested with a smile, before remembering that no one had a clue what she was talking about. Still, if they were imaginary constructs it didn't really matter. "Sorry, never mind. Let's go," she added with a laugh.

"That's my fear as well." Marcus nodded to Anakin. Now that the three of them had their weapons and their resolve, the Ranger was glad to be getting on with it. Turning, he headed down the corridor, accepting the lead position the other two had given him. All in all, he felt better than he had a few minutes before, before Sir Anakin and Inspector Drake had joined him. He was reassured to have help now, help that knew their way around a tense situation, and knew how to handle their weapons.

The library took a couple of minutes to search, but with the three of them things went quickly. There appeared to be no one there, and they soon moved on. The games room was similarly unoccupied, which seemed odd to Marcus, because there was nearly always someone there, and after a conscience-calming walk around the space, they headed for the last door in the hall, the door to the ballroom.

"Well, if they're in this building, this is the last place I can think that they would be. Let's be ready, everyone."
