It wasn't really nighttime yet, but Vaako had found himself waiting all day for the sun to set. He'd woken up in Riddick's arms still, and that's how he wanted to go to sleep. Free, free from his wife, forever. The Lord Marshal had said so. On top of that, the previous night had been the first time he hadn't had nightmares since he came to Mirage. Maybe it was that his hand stayed on the glowing print all night long.

He'd gone out, as usual, but found himself wandering aimlessly. He'd found all he could find in the library, he sensed that. There was nothing more books could tell him. They were on uncharted territory. Anyway, the sense of impending doom that he was feeling would have made it impossible to focus on reading. So, instead, he'd wandered through the warm sunshine, and this time, he didn't wear any armor. For the very first time, probably, since becoming a Necromonger, he went out without even one piece of the heavy plate armor. It felt different, walking around without it.

Finally, the sun had set, and Vaako had hurried back to his room... their room. He found himself going immediately to Riddick's bed, where the Furyan was still lying, and immediately joining him. It wasn't time to sleep, of course, but Vaako just wanted to hold him again. He was shocked and amazed that Riddick had allowed it last night. Sighing softly, he held on tight and whispered into the other man's ear.

"I think it's coming for me... I feel it."

Yvaine, despite her uneasy feeling, never would have guessed that a vampire had spotted her and was already stalking her. She may have been a star with excellent vision and excellent hearing- though maybe not so grand as that of an elf- but she was little more perceptive than a human when it came to tracking or scouting or sensing immediate danger. In truth, the only thing that might have triggered her- had she ever felt the feeling before and known what it meant- was a bit of light headedness she felt all of a sudden with a miniscule bit of pain that was more like an annoying ache. It passed almost as soon as it had arrived, but it made her pause to place a slender hand upon her forehead while she regained her bearings. What was wrong with her?

Suddenly, she heard a voice she did not recognize singing a lullaby with which she was definitely familiar, for she was the first star of the evening sky. If she didn’t feel so sick with anxiety and fear at the quickness of his movement, she may have almost felt relieved that someone in this place could recognize a star when he saw one. Clear blue eyes were wide as she tried to pinpoint his location when he removed himself from the right, her head whirling around, hair flying behind her. What was he? She heard his voice above her then, but when Yvaine tilted her head back to look he was suddenly behind her with his arms about her waist. Her heart beat frantically beneath her breast, and her glow was even dimmer, though it was impossible that it would ever go completely dark.

A cold chill passed over the star woman’s spine, pebbling her flesh, and her breath caught in her throat. She struggled against him, trying to free herself. It didn’t matter that her efforts were futile and her strength as minimal as a mere mortal. This situation was infinitely unpleasant, and he was definitely on her bad side now. Though her fear was great, her voice was strong. “Release me this instant you cretinous… verminous oaf! I did not give you my name, clodpoll, and you’ve no right to have it!” She was furious, and she could feel that anger fueling her, overpowering her fear. “You disgust me to the core of my being, lackwit! Her elbows jammed back into the abdomen of the man. His breath may have been hot, but his lips were cooler. They weren’t quite cold, but they didn’t seem nearly warm enough. She jerked her throat away from him as best she could as she trembled from both fear and from fury. “There is nothing to discuss, you coxcomb! I said to let me go!”

This had been why she’d been so mistrustful of Ayla when she had first met her. People were rude and terrible creatures, whether human or no. Something told Yvaine this man was no human. Mortal women could throw a punch to a man in the gut, and he would be affected by it. Lestat- the numbskull who was suddenly whisking her away most unpleasantly- didn’t seem to care that her sharp elbows pummeled into him. The evening star growled in a most unladylike- and unstar-ladylike for that matter- manner as she struggled to free herself from this man-like beast.
