Who: Aragorn and Legolas
What: Talking getting things straight
When: Late evening
Where: Legolas' room
Rating: PG-13
Status: complete

Aragorn had an interesting night to be honest. He had not been able to sleep. Not even close. His conversation with Vaako played in his mind as well as just everything he was feeling with and for Legolas.

The dark haired Ranger had not left his room since returning to it.He had not planned to. He spent his time alone, thinking. He had taken a meditating position upon the center of his floor that now resembled that of a forest instead of rooms found back in Rivendale.

There was a fire burning in front of him warming him and opening him up.And he allowed himself to slip into deep thought. His heart no longer belonged to the beautiful Arwen. In truth it hadn't belonged to her in quite a while. Somehow a friendship grew so deeply between him and Legolas though neither would gush about it so to speak. But somehow along the way it had turned to something more. Something much deeper, scarier and complicated.

It hit him right as he opened his eyes that while the subject had been brought up they had hardly touched on him and Arwen and now it was time, Aragorn decided. It was time for him to be completely honest. It was time to tell Legolas that he had fallen in love with him. Standing and only grabbing the sword of which he would never part, Aragorn gathered his courage and strength and slipped from his room going the short distance to the room beside of him.Hesitating only one moment he knocked on the door hoping the Elf was in his room.He also made a note to speak to him of the matter of Vaako should the warrior start trouble.

Something was wrong. Very, very wrong. Legolas could feel it, and it hung over everything he'd done in the day. Not that he'd done so much, which was unusual for the active elf. He'd eaten, wandered around for a bit, and tried to surpress the nearly overwhelming urge to knock on Aragorn's door, to see if he would share this unease with him. He hadn't, of course, but several times he'd come very close.

Finally, he'd returned to his room, after a longing look at the closed door. Behind it, he knew, there was a good chance Aragorn was there. He'd been paying attention as he wandered, and he hadn't seen the human anywhere. But the way he was feeling, well, he was quite simply too vulnerable to allow himself to seek out the Ranger's company. He might end up seeking something quite different, and honor would not allow this.

There was nothing to do in his room. Although, of course, Mirage would provide him anything he wanted if he concentrated, he couldn't think of anything that could even remotely interest him. Not through the weight of his ever-growing love for his best friend, or the sense of a slowly settling doom that he couldn't fight, nor stop.

When there was a knock on the door, he knew who it was. He'd made many friends since coming to Mirage, but still, he knew it was none of them. Despite his misgivings, he didn't waste any time going to the door and opening it. He'd been changing into a more simple outfit, a tunic of soft, dark brown silk, and he still wore the green leggings he favored. It was not an outfit that a prince should be seen in, but he opened the door nevertheless.

"My King...." His long, slender fingers closed around the human's wrist, and he pulled him in. "Please... I badly need comfort." The door closed, and Legolas looked at Aragorn with eyes dark as they only where when he was really concerned about something. It was an unusual state, all told, for him to be in.

The feeling of dread he had for several days now was stronger. Made even stronger in fact by the heavy, deep feelings the Ranger was having for the Elvin Prince. He knew how he was looked upon in the Middle Earth but here, here on this planet oit was so easy for Aragorn to simply be. And to simply be the Human he was. The man he was.The man that was so deeply in love with the Elvin Prince though much like with Arwen, Aragorn felt undeserving of having Legolas in his life.

Taking in the attire,Aragorn knew this was not the Legolas he knew. The one he fell completely in love with. For the last several days, the light, the laughter, the heart had drained from Legolas. It was no longer bright in dark eyes. Those eyes no longer danced with mischief. And Aragorn could tell so much weighed on his mind. It bothered him more than he could say.

Walking in and looking at Legolas once the door was closed, Aragorn wasted no time and with no hesitation he went to Legolas and opened his arms to the Elf. He wanted to give him comfort. To soothe him.

"Things weight heavily upon your mind, my Elvin Prince. You're deeply troubled. I want to help you." Aragorn spoke softly but with each word spoken a new desperation sunk into his tone.

"Legolas before anything else is said... I need to speak with you on several things.Several very important things."Aragorn looked at the Elf, his heart racing and his love he knew was shining in his eyes.He couldn't stop it.

It was so odd to him that people thought of Aragorn as grim and completely humorless. He'd seen so much more in him, and though he had, himself, been all too quick to dismiss him as 'just a human' before, he could no longer do that. He'd become a friend. That would have been enough, even if he hadn't fallen in love. But, somewhere in there, while he'd been learning about the human's compassion and, yes, his sense of humor, he'd stopped thinking of him as 'just' an anything.

Once more, Aragorn showed his kind nature, the one that few saw, and Legolas felt honored to have done so. When those arms opened, he didn't even hesitate before flinging himself toward him and wrapping his own arms around the human's waist. His blond head rested on the man's shoulder, and he relaxed just slightly. Not much, but a little.

"It is just this feeling. Evil has come, hasn't it? I do not know if it is evil as strong as the Ring, but it feels... the same. A shadow in the back of my mind. I cannot get over this feeling that I am about to lose you again."

My Elven Prince... The words echoed in Legolas' head. His Prince. That sounded far too good. He smiled just a little as he raised his hand and hesitantly touched the human's dark hair. He had to be very careful. It would be all too easy to just allow his fingers to tangle in those locks, but he didn't dare. And, anyway, Aragorn clearly had something very important to tell him.

"What is it? You know there is nothing you may not speak to me about." He forced a laugh, and there was just a hint of the old familiar mischief in his tone. "Even though it will likely bore me, coming as it does from a human."

Aragorn held Legolas against him, his eyes closed as he tried to sooth the Elf and to just enjoy having him this close. He forgot just what it was he was supposed to be saying. What he was supposed to be doing. He just got lost in holding the Elf.

But finally he spoke even just a little at his question. The evil was coming he could feel it. "It's different yet the same as the evil and danger the Ring held, that it brought. I sense that things are about to change." He sensed it too. That something was too happen to tear them apart was that why he was doing this? "I do not know, but I think you might be right."

Pausing he moved them to sit down and looked at Legolas intently. "We spoke of Arwen not too long ago. I don't believe I ever finished." He began and quickly. He was already starting to ramble. "I don't think.. I don't.. My heart doesn't belong to her. It hasn't for quite sometime. Not sure when it just don't.. I can't explain.. I just.." He was rambling and pretty badly. He kept going but now his words were incoherent.

Maybe Aragorn had intended for Legolas to sit down beside him. But, unfortunately, the mischievious elf had no intention of doing anything of the sort. Instead, he once more seated himself squarely in the Ranger's lap, and kept his arms wrapped around the human's neck firmly. It was probably wrong, but they'd done it before. And if he was about to lose Aragorn, surely he could allow himself this one idulgence.

"I will come for you, my Ranger King. I make you this solomn promise now, that wherever you go, I will follow. I shall not rest until you are back with me."

He meant it, each and every word. He wasn't going to let Aragorn be taken away, not again. He would follow, even if it meant finding a way to leave Mirage. He took the Ranger's hand in his and gazed into his eyes, trying to show that, for once, he was being completely and totally serious about something. It wasn't a joke. He stayed like that, face to face with the Ranger, mere inches separating him from his friend. It was hard to breathe.

"Yes, we spoke of the Evenstar, and you said that..." He frowned and listened to the rest of what Aragorn was saying. Not that it made a lot of sense. "What is it you are trying to express, my King? That you have fallen out of love with the Elven Princess is clear enough, but what is not clear is why. You are destined for her, or..." He sighed softly. "I am not sure about this concept of destiny any longer, Aragorn. But, tell me. If not her, is there... someone else?" He wasn't sure he wanted to know, wasn't really sure how he felt about any of this. His first impulse was overwhelming joy, but surely that wasn't appropriate.

It should have bothered him that as they sat Legolas ended up in his lap once more.It should have irritated him and at the very least Aragorn should have removed the bratty Elvin Prince from his lap. But none of this happened. What did happen was Aragorn wrapped his arms around Legolas and rested his head on his slender shoulder as he took a in a deep breath. He was shaking he realized. And for the first time in so very long, Aragorn felt real, truly real danger and fear. Something was indeed about to happen. and he feared Legolas was right. It would tear them away from each other.

"No matter what Legolas, we will find each other again. I will not stop searching until I do." he promised with a mixture of violent faith and pure desperation. He was truly in fear of the danger lurking somewhere near by. He was more fearful of this deep love so deep within him for the Elf.

He was blushing, his chest rising up and down a little more. His hold on Legolas went tighter as he tried to find a way to explain this without telling him the total truth. With this danger lurking, they both needed to be focused and clear headed.

"I no longer believe in destiny. Not in it being set out for us. I believe our destiny is what we make it to be." He paused and closed his eyes."SO much to explain. So much to tell but not yet, my Elfin Prince. Not yet.We need to be focused on te coming danger. But the moment it is past we will have this talk again." God this was hard. he wanted to just yell it out but he could not.Not yet.

Though he was impulsive, almost reckless at times, he was still an elf. And no creature who lived eternally could possibly be impatient about most things. They would be driven insane. So elves learned to wait, and enjoy the process of waiting. Legolas had learned this from a young age. Of course, it was all going out the window right about now. He didn't want to wait. Not even remotely. If there were things to talk about, they should do it now!

But then, he did recognize the human was right. Danger must come first, and be dealt with. And only after that challenge, whatever it was, had been faced and met, only then was it the time for talk. He sighed, nodding slightly to show he understood and accepted the human's words. He didn't have to like it, he just had to do it.

Of course, the way he was feeling, they wouldn't have to wait long before they talked again. Whatever was coming, was coming soon. He'd felt the dread building in his mind, and his rest had been troubled lately. It couldn't be longer, and Legolas wanted it to come now, so that he could fight it and then they could have the promised conversation. Aragorn had avoided his question about if there was someone else. If there was, Legolas wanted to know. Or, at least, part of him did.

"Destiny or not, you are still my King." He smiled softly, his words a bit more serious than he would have liked. He switched briefly to elven. "Even without your elven princess, and your crown, you will always be my King. And, of course, you could always wear my crown..."

If he had been capable of blushing, he would have done so. Luckily for him, elves can't. Would Aragorn know what he had just offered? He could only hope that the Ranger thought it was a joke, after all, the elf was known for joking about everything and anything. He buried his face into the other man's shoulder, breathing deeply. This was getting to be more than a little difficult.

It was quite odd. Despite knowing something was about to happen that would take him from Legolas, he was finding comfort and peace within himself at just being with him now. Of course every part of him screamed for him to tell Legolas the truth because perhaps this would truly be the last time they saw each other. He wanted too badly but they needed to focus and this would ruin that focus and cause them to slip. They had to be on guard.

THough shivers went through him at hearing the Elven being spoken and he closed his eyes, speaking softly in the same language. "Perhaps I simply want to be your Human." He paused knowing damn well how it sounded but meaning so much more. But he couldn't say it now though he hated waiting.

"We must be careful and mindful, Legolas." He changed the subject quickly. But it was also needed. "I sense that soon the darkness we know is coming will be upon us and it might be too late for us to stop it."

Slowly, knowing he had to do it, he climbed off Aragorn's lap. But he settled down beside him, and he took his hand in his. It was an effort, but he kept his touch light, affectionately friendly and nothing more. He rested his head lightly on the human's shoulder, offering comfort and accepting it, too. After all, love hadn't replaced the friendship he felt for the human, it had just added to it. There was no reason why they couldn't spend this time together as friends.

His reply was, at first, in elven. "That, you will always be. Have no fear on that account." He switched back to common. "I do not sense that it is coming tonight. We still have these last hours. Perhaps all will yet work out just fine." His voice didn't have a lot of hope to it.

Silently, they sat on the couch, as hour after hour of the long night passed. Sometimes, they talked. More often, they just sat in silence, hand in hand, the elf with his head on the human's shoulder. Just like in the old days, really, around the campfire. Only much more comfortable.
