Kibeth had been wandering along the border of Life and Death for quite some time. How long, she wasn't quite sure. Time worked funny in Death, even this close to life. It had been a while at least, and she was bored. She'd kept walking, even when she sensed she'd left the Old Kingdom. After all, there had to be _something_ past that world, since Death kept going. To alleviate the boredom, she'd experimented with different shapes. She'd kind of liked being a horse, though her hooves kept slipping in the water. Being a fish had almost been a disaster, as the currents had caught her and carried her almost to the first gate before she'd been able to turn back. Human form though was rather interesting. The opposable thumbs were indeed quite interesting, though there was little use for them here. She'd fallen down a couple of times as she tried to get the hang of two legged walking, but she thought she was doing okay now. She could even run a bit, though the ankle deep water made that a bit difficult.

Still, she was bored. Which is why, the moment she sensed the strangeness, she immediately went to check it out. Crouching down in the cold waters, she examined the border between Life and Death. It was nothing like she'd seen in the Old Kingdom. Here, the border had been worn thin, very thin, a long long time ago, as if some terrible catastrophe had killed millions. But then it seemed there hadn't been _any_ death in almost as long. It was like a thick scab had formed over the weakness in the barrier, preventing anything from crossing over. Curious, Kibeth reached out and touched the very edge of the thickening, trying to understand what was going on. As her fingers brushed the barrier, there was a flash of not-light that made her shut her eyes quickly, almost positive that _this time_ she'd finally pushed too far.

But when she opened her eyes again, she was pretty sure she wasn't dead, and was in fact, somewhere completely new. Now she was crouched on some rocks, overlooking a cove of beautiful smelling salt water, staring at a friendly looking dolphin who chose just that moment to splash water all over her.

"Well that wasn't very nice" she said, completely oblivious to the oddity of a grown woman talking to a dolphin as an almost equal. The dolphin chattered a burst, and Kibeth smiled. "No, I'm not getting in there with you. I can't swim in this form." The dolphin rolled, as if to say 'that's not what I asked' before swimming away.

"Ah well" she said with a sigh, and began to pick her way towards the building she could see in the distance. "Maybe the people here are friendlier"

Kibeth contradicted her, but she didn't feel like it was worth it to argeu the point. The idea being that if Brennan was dreaming, Kibeth wouldn't really know it, would she? Just because she explained that everything seemed very real, didn't mean that Brennan hadn't caused her to say that. After all, people controlled their dreams, didn't they?

As they stood in the courtyard where Kibeth was shown the plaque, Dr. Brennan waited patiently for the woman to read it. And patience was not Dr. Brennan's strong suit by a long shot. When Kibeth turned her almond eyes toward her and posed the question, Temperance nodded. "From what I have been able to tell. There is food and lodgings. Each person is assigned their own room. Although I have seen some rooms that have two occupants."

She turned away from the plaque and started walking toward a door. "Speaking of rooms, we should probably find the key to yours." She knew that they were in the lobby in the keybox. That's where hers had been anyway. She held the door open for Kibeth and then walked down a corridor toward the lobby. Finding the key had been as easy as she thought. The bright platinum thing shone as it moved on an unseen breeze.

"That one is probably yours." There was only one, so she didn't know who else it could belong to.

Kibeth followed Brennen to the lobby while trying to think of what she'd want if the planet could really provide anything. She didn't have a taste for soup bones any more - at least she didn't think she did. She hadn't needed much as a dog. Now she'd probably need things like clothing and hair brushes and such.

"Humanity is such a bother" she muttered as they entered the lobby. Then the shining key caught her attention and she crossed over to it. The other woman seemed to think it was for her, so she took it and turned it over and over in her hand. Keys were fascinating. They let to interesting places. Since it was best not to lose them, Kibeth called to mind a few Charter marks that would create a light chain so she could wear it around her neck. Even as she reached for the Charter, she felt something was wrong. Still, she spoke the marks, including the final master mark that usually burned her throat. Nothing happened. No chain appeared, and nothing happened.

Instinctively she made the mental reach for the Charter, only to find nothing. There was no Charter to use. Well, she was in another world. Curious she pulled for the forces of Free Magic to attempt the same feat. Free Magic wasn't as good at creation, and she doubted it would work either. This was probably a world without magic, like where Sammeth's friend had come from.

But it worked. The magic gathered and hardened into a silver chain, a bit thicker than she'd originally intended. A very worried look crossed Kibeth's face. Free Magic was all well and good if used responsibly, but humans were almost never responsible beings. And Free magic was so corrosive to the soul...

"This isn't good" she commented, glaring at the chain.

Brennan heard the muttered comment and had to quirk a smile. She felt the same way. Especially since she dealt better with the dead than she did with the living. She watched the woman take the key and examine it. And then she watched her pause for a moment. Brennan frowned, trying to figure out just what the woman was doing.

She was going to speak up when she saw a silver chain materialize in her hands, looping through the key. She suppressed a groan. Even in her dreams she was making things happen that were logically impossible. But even the woman didn't seem pleased that the chain had materialized in her hands. Perhaps she was a victim to this crazy dream the same was Brennan was.

"What's the number on the key? I'll show you where your room is." She tilted her head slightly, trying to turn it so she could get the best view of the key and maybe make out the number on her own. But she couldn't see it, so she gave up. Before she could lead her in the right direction, she needed to know which side of the main building her room was on.

When Kibeth told her, she turned and headed down another hall that led outside. Along the way, she pointed out doors that led to various places. Especially helpful were the cafe and kitchens. Brennan didn't really have much use for any of the other places. Except maybe the library. But she pointed them out nevertheless. Stepping outside for a moment before entering a different building, she led the woman to her new residence.

Kibeth continued frowning at the chain even as she threaded the key onto it and glanced at the stamped number. She told the other woman the number, which seemed to mean something to her. It meant very little to Kibeth, but she was willing to continue following the other woman's lead until she knew more about this place. Even if that woman seemed determined to bury her head in the sand regarding the realities of this place.

So Kibeth followed along the tour, only paying half attention as the other woman pointed out places of interest. Instead she was thinking. If this world had Free Magic, then it could support a Charter. And if it could, then it should, to protect people. But that would require defining _everything_, giving everything a mark, and marks to define the marks and to connect the marks... A monumental, legendary task. A smile broke out over Kibeth's face as they entered the housing building. What did she have, except time? If the plaque was correct, she couldn't leave, so she might as well devote at least some time to that project. Sure, she'd had help last time, but they'd been in kind of a hurry.

"Thank you for your help" she said, as the other woman showed her to her door. "This place is quite fascinating. Oh, and please don't try to do what I did with the chain. It's really bad for your soul. Corruptive and all" She gave another bright smile.

Temperance was usually one to face reality. But this was just not reality. It couldn't be. There was no logic to it. It wasn't possible. And therefore, it must be a dream.

Brennan turned back to catch a glimpse of the smile that broke out on Kibeth's face and wondered what she could be so joyful about. She'd just been kidnapped by a rogue planet and plopped down in the middle of a resort, but she was grinning like she'd just made a grand discovery. Brennan shrugged and trudged further down the hall to the room Kibeth was to occupy.

She nodded at Kibeth's thanks for directing her to the room. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked confused. "I can't make things appear out of thin air. I'm no magician." She took a deep breath, about to reveal the crazy thing all rooms did when the new occupant arrived.

"Just.. so you know. Your room will rearrange itself to look the way you want it to." She waited a beat, wondering if she should just leave or not. "Uh, was there anything else you need? The golems can get most anything, I understand. But I've also noticed things I need just appearing in my room. So.." She trailed off, feeling really really stupid for once.

Kibeth gave a sigh of relief as Brennen said she wasn't a magician. That was good. If you couldn't kill here, and Kibeth had little doubt that the Planet had some way of enforcing that rule, considering the thickness of the barrier between Life and Death, she wondered how she could put down a fully corrupted necromancer if one appeared. Yet another question about this place she'd have to figure out.

She'd slipped the key in the lock and was turning it when Brennen mentioned about the rooms looking like whatever you wanted. She'd never had a human room. There'd been Liriel's office at the glacier, the guest room at Abhorsen's house, fields, the boat... No she wasn't exactly sure what a 'normal' room would look like. Still, if she could rearrange it she supposed she could figure it out by trial-and-error.

"Thank you for your help" she said sincerely. "I'm sure I can figure things out from here." She wasn't sure if she wanted the other woman to see what ever strange thing the Planet decided to give her for a room. Might give away too much.

Temperance nodded her head when Kibeth thanked her. "Sure. I guess I'll see you around then. Goodbye." She watched her a moment longer. The woman was strange, and didn't seem to want Brennan to see what the room would look like once she stepped inside. That was fine. Brennan was nosy by nature, but she knew when she wasn't wanted.

She gave a half smile and then turned, heading for the exit. Well, Kibeth hadn't been quite as strange as she'd first thought. She was getting too used to being here. Next that big red guy would seem normal to her.

"Thank you!" Kibeth said brightly as the other woman made her farewell. As the woman walked off down the hall, she turned the door handle and pushed it open.

The room bore a strong resemblance to the library of the Clayr, all gray stone walls and dark wood bookshelves. To her delight the shelves were filled with books and there was plenty of light in the room to read by easily. There was a small desk in one corner with some notebooks piled on top of it, and a comfortable looking chair in front of it.

Kibeth smiled as she wandered around the room. So many books! This would be great fun. And with the notebooks, she could start working on a Charter for this place. She peeked behind the two other doors in the room, finding that one led to a small bathing room, and one to a closet full of interesting clothes. In the middle of the room there was a low mattress and tangle of blankets that seemed to be a bed.

Yes, this was quite nice. She'd fiddle around with details, but for now she pulled one of the books off the shelf and sprawled with it on the bed. This was going to be fun!
