Day 12- Training in the Sunshine
Who: Xena, Gabrielle, Katara, Toph & Faith (posting order)
What: Weapons Training
When: Early Morning
Where: A grassy area outside the gardens
Rating: Depends, probably PG
Status: Complete

Xena pulled herself from sleep. Something was different. The familiar sound of breathing next to her wasn't it. It was the absence of wind and rain being slammed against their windows. It was quiet, almost too quiet. The knotted feeling in her stomach hadn't lessened while she slept, either. She groaned and sat up. The bard was still sleeping. Xena wanted to let her sleep, but she also wanted to take advantage of the sunshine that was streaming cheerily through their window.

She scooted out of bed and leaned over Gabrielle. Mindful of morning breath, she shook the blond. "Wake up!" She sing-songed at her. "Rise and shine, rise and shine!" She mimicked a line she'd heard from Joxer about a thousand times one morning as a day continually repeated itself. She smirked and watched the battling bard's eyes flutter before reluctantly opening. "We are going to work out today, out there, in the sunshine." She gestured toward the windows.

Grinning, she dressed in her leathers and pulled on her bronze armor. She pulled her hair back halfway, leaving the black fringe against her forehead. She'd once pulled it back, but she didn't like it that way much. She sat down and pulled some cheese and bread out of a bag. She tore off some of the bread and munched on it while Gabrielle got dressed. She ate some of the cheese as well and waited while the bard ate her share of breakfast, too.

"Ready? We've got some girls to train. Katara and her friend Toph. Katara is the one I've been training on the staff. I've never met her friend, but she wants to learn the sword." She opened the door and walked out, down the hall to the exit and over into the next loding unit, E. She headed to the first floor room she knew was Katara's and banged on it. "Katara, it's Xena. Time for some more training!" She grinned at Gabrielle, wondering if she'd woken the girl like she had a couple days ago.

When Katara and Toph were ready, Xena made her way out of the lodging units into the sunshine and headed for the gardens. She knew there were grassy areas where they would be able to train. And lo and behold, when they arrived, there was a rack of weapons waiting for them off to one side. Xena shook her head, mystified at the way this Planet worked. "Alright, ladies. Are we ready for a little hard work?"

Katara could see the approval on Gabrielle’s face as she tested the waterbender’s defensive abilities. A smile crossed her lips when the shorter, blonde woman. “Well, when I learned waterbending, I was taught how to anticipate attacks and turn defense into offense in one smooth motion. Defense is the biggest part of waterbending.” She wasn’t sure if Xena had told her warrior companion that the Water Tribe femme could waterbend, but it wasn’t overly important. What was important was the fact that she already had experience in battles and defensive and offensive moves, even if the weapon was different.

It seemed both women who held staffs had their attention easily drawn toward the skirmish between the larger brunette and the one with the slight frame. It was Katara’s very nature to be protective of everyone. If things got out of hand, she would do her best to calm things down. She only shook her head when Toph produced a rock dummy to beat up with the sword because the two that might have taught her were duking it out. It pleased the waterbender that Xena touched on the importance of defense. It was soon apparent that no help would be needed. Xena held her own incredibly well, blocking every attack Faith threw at her. The corners of her lips turned up slightly. Defense was the most important thing in a battle, as far as the Water Tribe girl was concerned.

Even so, knowing attacks was helpful, and she was happy when Gabrielle told her she would learn a few basic attack moves. They were quite simple, and Katara got the hang of them pretty quickly. She wasn’t a professional by any means, but she was okay with them. The waterbender wasn’t really aiming to hurt the shorter warrior when she brought her staff down upon her, and she was quite glad the shorter female could easily block them. Later on, once she’d received enough training, this would become easier to her, and she would aim for attacks that couldn’t be blocked, but as it was at the moment, she simply wanted to learn the movements. She decided she would practice them more than she’d actually practiced when Xena had taught her. It would help a lot in the long run if something ever happened on the Planet, or if she ever left the Planet.

"That's fine." She said with a slight shrug. "I'm cool with however you teach, I'm just not going to stand around waiting for you to finish fighting her." Toph wasn't big on the whole defensive thing, as earth bending was all offense so it became habit, but if that's what it took to learn the sword from Xena she'd deal with it. That didn't mean she couldn't pick up on a few things on her own, rather then just waiting to be taught. She preferred to think of herself as determined, not impatient.

Sightless or not, her movements were almost spot on with every block that Xena made. Granted, she was just as bored, if not more so then the other woman as she didn't actually have an opponent attacking her. Still, it gave her a feel for a few defensive moves, and eventually hearing Gabrielle talk of attacking caught her attention. She grinned, and with another stomp the rock dummy crumbled and shifted in places until what she had was a figure holding a staff out as if to protect itself. A figure that had the same sort of height and shape of Katara, just for Toph's own amusement.

The fact that she was currently just playing around on her own instead of actually training like she'd wanted had initially irritated her, but it never took long for the teen to find ways to keep herself busy and entertained. So she had fun with it while she waited for her 'teacher' to finish showing Faith how things were done. She mimicked Xena's movements, parts of the attacks that Gabby had shown her friend, even trying to remember bits of what Sokka had done back home, taking all this out on her dummy. All of which looked less that perfect, and some completely made up on the spot, but a grin played across her lips anyways.
