Day Eleven
Who: Faith and Snape
What: Faith is one annoyed Slayer at being stood up, and also from having all sorts of fun dreams about Chaos arriving. Yay prophetic dreams, and Dahak's arrival!
When: Day 11 late morning
Where: Library
Rating: PG-13 for language. Again, this is Faith.
Status: Complete

Not that it hadn't been fun training with Gabrielle, or wanting to beat the hell out of sexist farmboys with obvious secrets, but she had wanted to train with the person she was supposed to be training with, her Watcher. Unfortunately, he'd seen the need to stand her up, and to say she was annoyed was an understatement. Add to that the really irritating prophetic dreams she'd been having, and it was just all around bad. Something was coming, or maybe had already arrived, and though nothing scared her... this came really close.

The best thing, she decided, was to find him and maybe have it out with him. And maybe tell him about the dream she'd had. She was feeling a bit more aggressive even than usual, and that was saying something. The irritation of the farm boy's words, along with the sparring she'd done with Gabrielle, had worked her up into quite a state, and she was feeling reckless. So, after a quick breakfast when most people would be thinking about lunch, the Slayer set off to find her Watcher.

Unfortunately, she had no idea where his room was, having only ever met him in the library. Still, that was as good a place to start as any, so the dark-haired girl, who was a little disturbed by the fact that she was apparently spending more time in the library than she had in her entire life up until now, headed back there. Once there, she looked around. Some hot guy in big armor was sitting around reading, but other than that, the place appeared to be empty. She smirked at the sight of the warrior reading a book, and turned to leave. She wasn't sure where she was supposed to find her AWOL Watcher but she'd think of something.

Snape was not amused. He had been a teacher for almost fifteen years, and he did not tolerate anyone under his direction speaking to him this way. He thought he knew what she was on about, but he did not in any way feel sorry for his actions.

"Are you referring to yesterday? I am quite aware that we had an appointment to train on the beach, but did you really think it was appropraite weather? Are you trying to tell me that you waited in a hurricane for me? My dear girl, I admire your dedication to your craft, but I would have thought it obvious that that would not be necessary. How many vampires do you think are foolish enough to go out in a storm like that? No, Faith, what is necessary, is that you learn to address me with more respect. I will not apologize. What I did was perfectly reasonable. You, however, will apologize to me immediately for the tone you are taking!"

Withdrawing his wand from his pocket, he did not aim it at his charge. He wanted her to know he was serious, but did not want to directly threaten her yet. He knew that she had never seen the extent of his power, having no prior knowledge of him before she sought him out, but thought it might be time she learned.

She didn't have the slightest idea that she should be intimidated by the wand he carried ready at his side. Of course, even if she had known, she probably wouldn't have been. Or at least wouldn't have shown it. She didn't back down the slightest bit as she continued to glower at her Watcher.

"You know shit about vamps, man. Trust me, they go out in all sorts of weather. Except sun, of course, they aren't big on tanning. I could totally see Spike, or hell, Angel out in this shit. Angel would love it, he could brood and be all angsty about life and everything better."

She cracked her knuckles, prepared in case he took exception to her comments. Which she figured was almost inevitable, considering how pissed off she was. Her stance became more agressive, more ready to fight.

"Are you fucking kidding me? Apologize? Oh, hell no! You're crazy. And, yeah! So what, I waited outside! I mean, it's not like I waited long..." She had, in fact, waited all day, but would rather eat slugs than say that. "But whatever, if you're not dedicated, I don't fucking need a Watcher, anyway!"

She tossed her hair angrily over her shoulder and turned to go, but kept a wary eye on him. Something about the way he was standing sparked some sort of watchfulness in her, and she realized that she really didn't know that much about him, or what he would do.

Snape continued to glare at the back of his defiant charge as she turned to go. She was so disrespectful, so rude, so arrogant! Why had he agreed to associate with her anyway? He knew he could let their new partnership dissolve right then, if he wanted to, save himself the stress and aggravation of the treatment she was giving him, but did he really want to? He hadn't had to agree to be her Watcher, but he had, and he had for a reason. He wasn't ready to give up on the opportunity she had presented, not yet, not before they had really given it a chance. He knew he would have to make a concession to her, if he was to preserve things. He made a grimace, as if swallowing something revolting.

"Faith, you may be right. I will concede that there is a good possibility that you know more about vampires than I do. I will admit that, though I have read much, I have only met one or two of them, while you, as you have told me, have encountered many. If you say there are those of them that would accept the protection a hurricane offers from the sun, I will believe you."

Glowering slightly, he waited for her response. He did not put his wand away, though he had not used it yet. He did not want to use it unless it were necessary, but he considered that very possible, given her volatility.

She did stop, which was something, and turned back around to face him. She didn't really want to leave. Chances were good, those damn prophetic dreams would start again if she did ditch him. Anyway, he was kind of attractive, in his own way. She didn't know why she noticed that, but she did.

"I said to apologize to me for standing me up!"

She glanced down at the wand at his side, wondering just why he kept holding it. Also, many people would have given up by now, let her leave. She wondered why he stopped her from going. What exactly did he get out of this? Why would he agree to take a job he'd never been trained for? All of these things went through her mind as they continued their standoff.

She stopped and turned around, which was something, he thought. He didn't really doubt she was taking this whole business seriously. After all, it had been she who had come to him with the proposal. Unfortunately, it was more than clear what proof she was demanding of his own dedication to the relationship. Snape sighed. The thought of an apology left a bad taste in his mouth before he had even uttered one, and he wracked his brain, trying to find a sincere way to give her what she wanted.

"Faith, I am impressed with your dedication to your role as Slayer, and it is clear that I have vastly underestimated it. Though I do not regret avoiding the storm, I do regret that. There is much we do not know about each other. Had I known you were prepared to train in a hurricane, I would have done more to communicate with you that morning. I am... sorry."

He gritted his teeth. This was so distasteful. He patiently bit his tongue, trusting a time was coming when he could retake the position of authority he saw as his due as a Watcher. Sacrifice, as he was well aware, was never pleasant, but was sometimes necessary.

She hadn't really expected him to say that. She'd thought that maybe they would fight, and deep down, perhaps she'd wanted that. She missed a good old fight, not training, but an actual fight between two people who really didn't like each other, or at least had some serious differences. She looked at him for awhile, almost thoughtfully. Suddenly, she smiled and nodded.

"Alright then."

She took a couple of steps toward him, obviously accepting his apology, and raised an enquiring eyebrow.

"So... what are we doing today, then?"

Apparently, as far as she was concerned, it was all in the past. She never much cared for holding grudges, and even if he hadn't apologized, it probably wouldn't have ruined their relationship forever. But then again, maybe it would. The dark-haired Slayer was anything but predictable.

Well, that was that, then. He had debased himself and she had accepted. This was not a good start to their relationship. Nevertheless, there was time to reverse things. Graciously or ignorantly, she had left things open for him to set things right. It seemed to Snape it was time to call his Slayer's bluff.

"Today we are going to train on the beach, of course."

If she truly was tough enough to train in a hurricane, he had to be tougher. He was not looking forward to the experience, but he wasn't prepared to show Faith any weakness. It wouldn't be cheating, he estimated, if he used his magical abilities to protect himself.

She looked at him for awhile, and then a slight smile broke out over her face. She pulled her hair back into a tight ponytail and tied it back, amusement on her face.

"Oh, well done..."

With her black sweat pants and white tank top, she was likely going to drown out there. The denim jacket she wore wouldn't protect her. But she wasn't about to give him the satisfaction of trying to squirm around and get out of this. So she simply did what she could with her hair to keep it from getting in her face, nodded at him, and turned to walk out the door. She gave an ironic little wave to the warrior as she left.

In the hallway, she turned back to talk to him.

"Oh, I think I need to tell you about a couple of people I met here. One of them at least I'm sure has something going on."

Well, she smiled. Apparently she was enjoying the game. Snape looked forward to seeing how much she enjoyed it when she was soaking wet and sand-stung. Casting nonverbally as they left the library, he enchanted himself with the impervius spell to repel water. He would decide what other magical protections he needed once he got outside. Nodding to Vaako as he passed, his mind began to think of the kind of training exercises it would amuse him to require her to perform in the pouring rain.

Once in the hallway, his thoughts were interrupted by her impromptu report.

"Oh? Do tell."

Could it be that she had already spotted the evil presence he had foreseen? Perhaps she was proving her worth to him already.

She frowned as they fell into step together, walking down the hallways towards the exit. She hadn't noticed him casting, of course. How could she have? So she figured they were both equally unprotected against the elements. Not that that bothered her, of course. She'd waited all day in the storm, and survived.

"Well, I met this blonde chick, awesome with a staff, okay with a sword. We fought and trained, I wanna do it again. I need the practice. You know, just in case. She says she has a friend, some warrior woman... maybe I'll get to meet her sometime. But she isn't the one that I really want to tell you about."

Reporting to your Watcher was second nature to a Slayer, and in fact, she would have felt a little odd if she hadn't done so. It was just part of the job. She kept going with her story.

"At the party that some chick threw, there was this geeky guy. I chatted him up, cause everyone else was busy and stuff, and something's up with him, Snape. I swear. He looked innocent but he was so strong. There was just something about him... you might wanna hit the books, find out what he is. Might be a demon."

Snape listened to Faith's report with interest. He wasn't sure what he had been expecting her to say exactly, but that hadn't quite been it. Still, he liked the effortless way she had just fallen into the rhythm of it; like it was second nature to her. That was a habit he did not want to discourage. But what was the significance of what she had told him?

"So, you've met a blonde warrior, and an unusually strong young man. Well, that is certainly interesting. I have no doubt that there is more to him than he has hitherto revealed to you. I cannot say, however, that I have enough information to look into him further. I would need an image of him, or perhaps some strands of his hair."

As they walked, Snape's mind turned over the possibilities offered by the blonde warrior. Was she a potential ally? Had Faith discussed her Slayer role with her? Could he take advantage of her as a co-trainee? The strong man did not concern him much yet. Demons might be common where she came from, but he was not convinced that everyone on Mirage with a special talent was one of them. After all, hadn't there been an unusually strong young man in the cafeteria when he had arrived? Perhaps it was not such an uncommon talent on other worlds.

She frowned thoughtfully at his request, but wasn't surprised by it. Giles had often made requests like that, and her and Buffy had always done their best to accomadate him. It would be the same with her and Snape, so she simply nodded.

"I'll see what I can do."

Having given her report, she then lapsed into chattering about her time at the party, and how it had actually been okay. Of course, she didn't much like to show actual enthusiasm for anything, but she didn't mind showing vague approval. Finally, they arrived at the door outside.

Snape was impressed at her quick and easy acceptance of his clearly magical request. He still wasn't completely clear on what a Watcher was or did, but it seemed that he was certainly fitting her expectations. Were there really that many people on her world that were so like him? The possibility boggled the mind.

Said mind started to drift as the young woman began to talk about the party. He didn't really care about her social life. But wait, maybe there was an opportunity here. Social engagements such as this party held less than no interest for him, but there may still be important reconaissance to be done there. He listened more closely to his Slayer's tale of the event.

When they reached the exit, she fell silent, and he opened the door onto the blustering landscape.

"Well, I'm glad you found it tolerable. Are you ready?"

"Yeah, for sure."

She didn't even hesitate when she saw the weather outside. She'd already seen the worst the storm had to offer, staying out in it for hours on end. She had no fear of it. Or, really, when it came down to it, of practically anything.

"Let's go!"

Without even a backward glance, the young woman who was in no way clad for walking even for two seconds in the storm, plunged out into it.
