Day 9
Who: Giselle & Doc
What: Playing Games
When: Afternoon
Where: Sitting Room
Rating: G
Status: Complete

After replying to the Doctor's message, Giselle scurried from her room. She was wearing a lavender dress today, and it set off her red hair brilliantly. Her feet, clad in matching slippers, skipped down the hall of the lodging unit to the door. She could hear the storm raging outside and shuddered slightly. She did not like storms.

She rushed through the main building until she arrived at the sitting room. Pushing the door open, she realized that she had probably arrived before the Doctor. She glanced around the peaceful room. It was quiet and had such lovely comfortable chairs and sofas. She, like Goldilocks, began to try them all out to see which one she wanted.

She sat in a beanbag chair and nearly fell over backwards, her legs flying up in the air most unlady like. "Oh!" She righted herself as quickly as she could and shot to her feet giving the beanbag a dirty look. "Humph." She turned and saw a wicker chair. She sat down and crossed her ankles, her hands folded primly in her lap. Too hard.

Standing she moved to the sofa for two. It had big fluffy cushions and padded armrests. She sat down and slowly began to sink into the cushions. She giggled and tried to pull herself up. After a few seconds of struggling, she was able to get hold of the armrest and pull herself out of it. She moved to a big chair that looked both comfortable and sturdy and sat down.

She didn't sink, and she was quite happy with her choice. She clapped her hands and waited for the Doctor to arrive.

Typical. The planet decided to turn into what actually looked like the Doctor's idea of a resort, and then the weather had decided to go completely mental. Being stuck on a planet was one thing, but being stuck indoors was liable to get the Doctor to dangerous levels of boredom. Keeping himself busy was definitely going to be a challenge, so he had been very eager to respond to Giselle's request. The Doctor loved playing games, but unfortunately people tended to stop wanting to play with him when they realised they were never going to win. Teaching a game was different; playing with a complete beginner would actually keep his attention.

The previous day, the planet had almost succeeded in separating him from his suit, but today it was back in full force, tie and all. As he left his room he focused on the thought of board games, and sure enough he found himself almost tripping over a pile left in the hallway outside his door. He picked them up, balancing them carefully as he made his way to the sitting room. He pushed the door open with his back, letting gravity close it after him.

"Hello!" he called out from behind his tower of boxes, moving to dump them onto the table. "I think the planet got a bit enthusiastic with the games," he commented, wiping down the front of his jacket and giving Giselle a wide smile.

Soon, the door opened and a pile of boxes walked through the door. She raised her brows and leaned to one side, trying to seen around them. She heard his voice and grinned. "Hello, Doctor!" She laughed when he dumped them on the coffee table. "Oh, how wonderful! Look at them all. Can you play all of these?" She began reading the names of the games on the sides. She had never heard of any of them.

"Ooooh, I can't wait to learn all these wonderful games!" She clapped, bouncing slightly in her chair. "Which one shall we play first?" She was so excited, as if it weren't obvious enough. She hadn't been in New York long enough to learn any new games. She had played hopscotch with Morgan once or twice, though. But it was an outside game, and there was no way she was going out in the weather raging against the resort now.

She looked over at the Doctor expectantly, blue eyes wide and full of wonder.

"Yup!" he grinned, flopping into a nearby chair. "I'm getting on a bit, and hanging about on Earth so often you tend to pick up a few games along the way," he explained, peering at the games with her as he tried to decide which one would be best for a complete beginner to the world of board games.

Her enthusiasm was catching, and the Doctor found himself sitting on the edge of his seat, bubbling with an odd excitement as he sorted through the boxes. "I think Snakes and Ladders is a good starting point. It's a lot less complicated than most of the games, and it doesn't take ages to set up or play like... Monopoly. You can play Monopoly for hours and never get to a winner. It's... completely ridiculous," he explained, although he seemed to find this fact a lot more entertaining than worth complaining about.

He found the Snakes and Ladders box, and moved the rest of the boxes to the floor. He waggled his eyebrows at her, the toothy smile never leaving his lips as he slipped the top off the box. "It's a classic. You'll love it!" he insisted.

Her blue eyes followed him as he dropped into a chair near her. She shook her head at the idea that he knew how to play all those games. "You're amazing!" She laughed softly.

She watched him pull Snakes and Ladders out of the pile and nodded. "Um, it doesn't use real snakes, does it?" She was alright with most creatures, she loved nature, but snakes were a different matter. They were reptilian and gave her the willies. She was fairly certain that the Doctor wouldn't bring a game that involved live creatures, though.

"Monopoly." She tried the word out. She wasn't sure what it meant, or what a game based on the name could be like, but if you had to play for hours without accomplishing anything, she wasn't sure she would like that one. "Well, let's go with Snakes and Ladders, then." She nodded.

As the rest of the boxes were put on the floor, she leaned forward in anticipation. She giggled at his brow waggle and then dropped to her knees next to the coffee table. "If you like it so much, I should think I will too!" She giggled again, propping her chin in one of her hands and watching him set up the game. She was relieved to see that there were no real snakes in the box.

The Doctor couldn't help but laugh as she called him amazing, shaking his head with amusement. "What, because I can play all these games?" he asked, rather tickled by the thought. He was quite used to impressing people, but it usually took a little more than Snakes & Ladders.

"No, no, no! No live animals were harmed in the making of this game!" he grinned, pulling out the game board and placing it down on the table top. As she moved to the floor, he decided to join her and sat cross-legged, leaning back against the chair he'd just slipped out of. "Well, it's for ages three plus," he pointed out on the side of the box. "So I don't know what that says about me!" he laughed, placing two tokens on the first square of the board and locating the dice.

"OK, so it's quite easy. You just roll this," he rolled the dice as an example, "and move your token the number of squares it shows. And if you land at the bottom of a ladder, you get to climb it. But, if you land at the top of a snake, well... down you go!" he grinned, sliding the token about to show her what he meant, even though it was probably unnecessary.

"Yes! It's wonderful." She smiled as she gushed. "And you know so much about art." She shook her head in wonder. "It is amazing." She said matter-of-factly. She grinned and leaned on the coffee table, waiting as he explained the rules of the game. She was delighted by the brightly colored game board and looked it over, blue eyes taking in every inch of it.

She laughed when he told her what ages the game was meant for. "Or me!" She grinned, but she didn't mind learning a game meant for children. It was a start. She watched him place the tokens on the start and pick up the cube with the little black dots all over it. She followed his movements with rapt attention as he demonstrated the rules of the game.

She bounced slightly, nodding. "Oooh, this is fun! Alright, I think I understand. How do you determine who goes first?" She tilted her head, locks of red hair falling over one shoulder as her cherubic face turned toward him. She was enjoying the Doctor's company immensely. He was very kind and he seemed to be patient. He was also quite funny. If he were a prince, she might have been attracted to him. But, she was fairly sure he wasn't, and was content to be his friend.

"Yeah, I'm a regular fountain of recreational knowledge," he said a little sarcastically, but his continued smile served to show that he wasn't mocking her in any way.

"Oh well, what's the point in getting old if you can't afford to be a little childish from time to time?" he asked, although with the Doctor he supposed it was more than just from time to time.

"Well, some people roll the dice and whoever gets the highest number moves first. But, in this case, I think I'll let you go first. It's a first-time players honour!" he suggested, passing the dice over to her. Her enthusiasm seemed endless, whether she was viewing art or playing board games, and such enthusiasm certainly made for enjoyable company on such a terrible day.

"Well, you are." She smiled. She had learned a lot about the art in the gallery from him, and now he was going to teach her to play these wonderful games. "You are a good teacher."

She giggled at his quip about being childish. She was a little too childish sometimes, too. But it wasn't so much a choice as the way she'd always been.

She took the dice from him with a bright smile and shook them in her fist before dropping them onto the game board. They tumbled and then settled showing two and four. "Six!" She took her token and moved it six spaces along the trail. She landed neither near a ladder or a snake and then looked at the Doctor.

"Now what?" She crossed her arms on the coffee table and leaned forward slightly. She was more than happy to be in a quiet room playing a game with pleasant company rather than keeping in her room with a storm raging outside. Here, she could barely hear the howling wind and booming thunder.

"I'm glad you think so. Hopefully I've gained a little patience in my old age," he suggested. Games he could teach - temporal physics? He just started insulting his students intelligence. Or the intelligence of their entire species. It wasn't his best quality, really!

"Fantastic!" he grinned, barely resisting the urge to start clapping as she moved her token the correct number of spaces.

"OK, now I roll," he told her, taking the dice and rolling a measly four. He pulled a face of disgust, and slid his token along the board. "I suppose I failed to mention that the first person to get to the one hundred square is the winner, btu I'm sure you filled in that obvious blank for yourself," he added, realising he'd forgotten one of the most important points. "Ok, your turn again."

Giselle giggled at his use of the term "old age". He didn't look old to her, but she knew there was a possibility that he was older than he looked. Still, it was funny to her. "You seem patient to me." In all reality, she had a hard time imagining he could be impatient.

She beamed as he praised her. Another quality of a good teacher. She clasped her hands in front of her and waited for him to take his turn. She did clap when he rolled a four. His disgust was amusing and she giggled.

She nodded when he explained the end of the game, too. Pointing to the end space, she asked, "This one, right?" She nodded again and bounced up when it came to be her turn again. She rolled the dice again and ended up with a seven. She squealed and moved her piece along until she came to the end of a snake. She gasped, then remembered that you could only go down a snake, not go up it.

Giggling again she picked up the dice and handed them to the Doctor. "Your turn!"

"Oh, good!" he said with a broad smile. "In that case, I'm definitely improving. Or maybe it's just the excitement of the game!" he suggested, which was entirely possible.

He couldn't help but laugh as she applauded his roll of the dice; there was something about Giselle that was just so endearing. She seemed to bring out all of the childlike awe in him, which was definitely a good thing.

"Yeah, that's the one," he confirmed. He gave a wide grin, and followed suit with the clapping as she rolled a seven. Her expression as she reached the end of the snake was adorable, and it was all the Doctor could do not to give her a hug.

"Yay!" he cheered, moving to take his shot. He landed on a ladder, and gave her a wide-eyed look of surprise as he moved up the board. "Oh, you're going to need some luck now!" he giggled. Snakes and Ladders really was a game of chance, and even if he had been patronising enough to want to deliberately let Giselle win, it would have been near impossible. But then, the unpredictable aspect of the game was what he found so exciting about it.

Giggling with delight and excitement, Giselle kept her eyes on the game board. It was good that her actions were endearing rather than annoying. At first, Robert had been bewildered by her, and slightly annoyed. He couldn't take her seriously, and his life was all about being serious. The Doctor was more tolerant perhaps because he wasn't so serious.

She sat back on her heels while he rolled and her mouth dropped open when he approached the ladder and went up it. "Oooooooo!" She cooed and clapped, bouncing up and down. "You did it!" She laughed at his teasing and picked up the dice. She rolled the dice when he finished placing his piece and found herself with snake eyes. "Two!"

She moved her piece past the snake and beyond two spaces. She was again in the middle of nowhere, but at least she wasn't near the snake anymore. She knew those were bad, and even if she was on the lower end of one, she still didn't like it. "Your turn!"

She watched him, observing silently. She wasn't all that great at being subtle, but she liked the Doctor and he seemed to enjoy her company enough. She smiled when she caught his eye and turned her attention back to the board. Yes, she decided that she liked the Doctor very much.

"Oh, yeah. Climbing the ladder of success!" he teased, unable to keep the smile off his face as her enthusiasm seemed to increase rather than fade.

He took the dice again and rolled a six. He gave a small cheer, but his celebration had been too early - on the sixth square lay a snake, ready to take him back down the board. "Aw, life's full of ups and downs, I suppose!" he told her, accepting his defeat with dignity.

"Better luck to you!" he told her, passing over the dice once more.

She grinned at him and rocked back up to her knees to watch him roll and move his piece. Her eyes widened when he landed at the top of a snake and had to slide down it to the bottom row of spaces. "Oh, dear!"

She put a hand to her mouth in shock. "Oh, no. I'm so sorry. Do you want to trade places?" She offered. She didn't like to see people lose. And, it wasn't as if the game was over just yet, but still.

She picked up the dice and rolled them, rolling a ten. She moved her piece the allotted spaces and found herself at the bottom of a ladder. She squealed in delight and moved her piece up ladder to the space above it.

She handed the dice over to the Doctor. "You can still trade me places if you like!"

The Doctor gave her an exaggerated pout of sadness as she told him how sorry she was, but his expression quickly changed to a smile with her next sentence. "Do I..what?!" he asked, unable to stop himself from laughing. "No, no, no... oh, you're just too nice, Giselle!" he giggled, reaching out to pat her hand affectionately. "Don't worry about me!"

He gave a little cheer as she moved up a ladder, and accepted the dice for another roll. "No! You're doing so well!" he exclaimed, rolling the dice for himself, and moving a few spaces before handing them back to her. "Go on, lady luck!"

She giggled at his obvious delight at her comment. She didn't see what was so funny about it, but she didn't want to feel stupid by asking. So she just played along and shrugged.

She rolled the dice when they were handed back to her and found herself also at the top of a snake. She slid down to the bottom with a pout that quickly turned back into a grin.

They played this way until one of them won. Giselle was pleased that she'd learned a new game and was able to spend more time with the Doctor. She thoroughly enjoyed his company. He was entirely too nice to her, though.

"I would like to take another look in the art gallery when you get a free moment. That is, if you don't mind explaining more of the art in there. I saw some new ones that weren't there before." She spoke as they put the games away and chatted a bit.

After a while it was time for them to part ways and Giselle stood. Flinging her arms around the Doctor she hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek. "You really are the most wonderful man. Thank you for teaching me to play Snakes and Ladders. Have a good day, Doctor!"

She flounced out of the room and headed back to her residence to wait out the storm.
