Day Eight
Who: Faith and Snape
What: Happy Library time
When: Mid-afternoon
Where: Faith might just find what she's looking for.
Rating: It's Faith. So at least PG-13
Status: Complete

Again, she'd had the dream last night. It was getting worse. But then, that's how the prophetic dreams worked, for her anyways. They got worse every night until they were fulfilled. There was no point in fighting against them, Faith knew that very well. She hated being told what to do, but there was no fighting against something intangible, like a dream. Even she had to admit that they always came true, and there was nothing to be done about it.

The dream was the same every time, at least on a basic level. A tall, dark man with long, black hair told her things about the supernatural with a British accent. She was familiar enough with Giles and Buffy's relationship to know what was going on there. She was to be trained, the dark man was supposed to be her watcher. Other than that, details were vague. She couldn't make out his face, or anything about him other than his hair color, voice, and the fact that he wore dark colors. The only thing that ever changed in her dreams was the sense of urgency she had about the whole thing throughout the dream and upon awakening. She had to find him, so the damn dreams would shut up already.

She wandered through the hallways and out into the grounds, still lost in her dreams. At first, she didn't even notice that the planet had changed itself. Still, it was impossible to miss forever, and her dark eyes narrowed as she surveyed the area, swore loudly, and stormed back inside. She could not handle that, she just simply could not.

Besides, she had to find her damn Watcher. She'd thought Marcus might be it, he had the right hair and look, and of course the accent. She found herself recoiling a little at how she'd acted yesterday, which was surpising, for her. But then, she'd acted in a way she wasn't at all comfortable with, so maybe it wasn't surprising. Anyways, it was a good thing Marcus wasn't her Watcher, because there was no way she was going to want to be anywhere around him anytime soon.

Well, she'd just have to find this man, that was all. She scanned her mind for what she knew about Giles. Kind of a dork, really, though cute in his own way. Always reading, in the library... right. So that was it. She'd start her search in the library. She'd try to find dark men with British accents and just ask them questions to find out if they were her watcher. It wasn't like she was exactly shy about talking to new people.

It wasn't much of a plan, but it was exactly the sort of crazy stunt that appealed to her. If she had to find every single dark haired man with a british accent on the entire planet and ask him, she would. Anything, so that she could sleep again.

"My God, Prophetic dreams suck ass..."

She murmured to herself as she wandered towards the library. Hopefully there, she'd find her damn Watcher and then maybe she could actually catch a good nights sleep, for once. A girl could hope, especially one named Faith. She pushed open the door to the room and glanced around.

As Faith slid her sword back into its sheath, Snape eased his grip on his wand. Apparantly the girl wasn't as unreasonable as he'd first imagined. Disrespectful, though that was normal for people of her generation. Also, a muggle, of course, likely with no concept of magic, or of what he could do to her, should he so desire.

"You have no idea what kind of threat I could be to you."

Snape moved closer, away from the door, allowing her to leave, if she wanted. He wasn't sure why she wanted to talk with him after she had already claimed not to enjoy libraries. He supposed it must be that perverse friendliness that afflicts some people, muggle and wizard. He hoped she would go away soon, if he didn't encourage her.

"Faith, are you? I'm... Professor Snape. As for how it's going, I find myself abducted to a strange alien world that appears to want to make me happy and comfortable. I am looking forward to enjoying some time in the library. Clearly, the person you seek is not here. Perhaps you should look elsewhere."

Yes, definately a British accent. Although, Giles had always been much... nicer. But that was probably just him, because Miss Post had been very strict and stern. She sighed softly. She'd actually really liked Miss Post. Too bad she'd been evil and completely insane.

"Ohhhh, I'm scared. Seriously. I might fall over dead from being so scared."

The smartass reply came naturally, completely automatically, as she assesed him. Large brown eyes narrowed as he introduced himself. Maybe he was who she was looking for...

"Profesor. Heh. Awesome. So I guess you like to teach people and stuff like that? Hey, are you into, like, the supernatural and stuff? Do you teach people about the supernatural?"

Her tone was overly casual, but there was a barely disgused eagerness on her face. Suddenly, she darted behind him. In the dream, he'd been standing facing away from her, and then had looked back at her. She could judge better if he was in that pose once more.

"Hey, Skeletor! Back here!"

This girl was really starting to annoy Snape. This was not at all what he had hoped for when he had sought out the library that morning. He had hoped that perhaps the majority of the insufferable people in this place would be content to go play outside, and that the only persons he would come across in the library would be like him, erudite and quiet. This Faith gave the impression of being neither.

"Perhaps you should do us both a favour and do so! Yes, I am 'into' the 'supernatural'; yes, I am a Professor of the 'supernatural'; and no, I do not like to teach people!"

Snape suppressed an irritated surge of anger, as the exasperating young woman darted around behind him. Rolling his hands and letting out a sigh, he turned over his shoulder to see what she wanted.

"Do not call me that again. My name is Snape! What do you want?"

She was very good at only hearing what she wanted to. All she heard, really, was that he was a teacher, and he knew about the supernatural. What the hell else could a Watcher need? She grinned. Looked like she was going to be able to get some damn sleep tonight.

"Oh, thank the fucking Lord. Do you have any idea how long I've been..."

She gasped as he turned around and looked over his shoulder. Her already large eyes got even bigger, and she felt like some sort of animal who has been stalking her prey for a long time, and has finally closed in on it. It was exactly the silhouette from her dream. There was no question. This was the one she'd been looking for.

"Dude! You're supposed to teach me shit about being a slayer and stuff... you're the one who's supposed to be my watcher! I've been looking for you forever, like, for two days! And now I've found you. Wicked."

Snape turned to look at the young woman completely. Why would she not just leave him alone? Why would she not just make some sense? Clearly, as much as it may pain him to do so, he was going to have to deal with this before he could get any time to himself in this library.

"Do you have any idea what little sense you are making? 'Watcher'? 'Slayer'? I have no idea what you are talking about! I have not come here to teach you, nor would I want to if I had! Your behaviour is erratic and violent. What could you possibly do to give me the impression that you would be a willing and respectful student?"

Truly, the girl's ideas were somewhat ridiculous. He half-suspected she had made them up on the spot to torment him. At Hogwart's, despite the respect due his position, there had always been one or two senior Gryffindors willing to lose points over playing jokes on him.

Apparently, this wasn't going to be as simple as she'd thought. Well, that was annoying, and really unexpected. A surge of doubt went through her as she looked at him. She'd never heard of a watcher who was reluctant to do their job. Maybe he wasn't... but the dreams were never wrong, and he matched them too closely. Either he was meant to be her Watcher, or the dreams were wrong. The last one was completely unthinkable.

"Sucks to be you, then. You'd be better off if it was B you were teaching, cause, like, she was always riding Giles dick, you know? Not literally, or at least I don't think so, but she always did what he said and stuff."

She crossed her arms over her chest and smirked at him, knowing that the dreams always made things happen, no matter how hard people fought against them.

"Anyways, you're the one from the dream, and those dreams are always right. They told me I was coming here. So, like it or not, Skeletor, we're going to be spending a lot more time together."

Snape closed his eyes and sighed. Why did it have to be him? Despite the girl's irritating way of speaking, it was perfectly clear to him what she was trying to say. She had had a prophetic dream, and in this dream he had become her tutor. He had known enough people who had had prophetic dreams to recognize the sincerity in her voice and the recognition in her eyes. She had seen him before, he could tell. It could only have been in a vision.

How exasperating. It seemed that even here he could not escape the responsibility of teaching irritating young people. It seemed it was his fate, his hideous, trying fate. Of course, it was better than playing lieutenant to the Dark Lord. Oh, well, might as well start things off properly. In two swift strides he had crossed the distance between them, his wand suddenly out and pointing at her face.

"I told you to never call me that again! Now, I understand that you believe it is my fate to mentor you, but I must be absolutely certain! Hold still, and I will scan your thoughts. If you are lying, there will be a price!"

Faith watched is amusement as he struggled with what she was saying. She recognized it because Giles sometimes had the same expression when she, or Buffy, was being particularly difficult. Obviously, she'd been correct when she'd identified him as the one from her dream. She was stupidly proud of herself, even though she hadn't actually done much to be proud about.

All of that faded away when he crossed the room towards her. She was instantly on guard, ready to attack if he decided he would try something stupid. She didn't draw her sword, but then, she didn't really need her sword. Maybe he really, really didn't want to teach her. Not that he had a choice, because really, her dreams always came true one way or another. When he spoke, her eyes widened in panic.

"Oh, hell no! No one goes into my fucking brain... stay away from me! I can't kill you but I can hurt you a whole hell of a lot..."

She backed up, fists raised, ready to attack if he showed any signs of reading her mind. Lestat had done it with disturbing ease, and she wasn't about to led this man do it, not without a good fight on her part.

Snape narrowed his eyes at the uncooperative young woman. He was not really surprised by her response, but it did tell him things about her. It told him she had a strong will and a strong sense of self. He didn't really need to read her mind to verify her claims, so backed away, lowering his wand.

"Very well. I choose to believe your claims, but I would warn you that a relationship like the one you desire can only work successfully if there is trust between the two individuals involved. You must trust me, Faith, as I choose to show trust in you."

To underscore the gravity of his words, he glared meaninfully at her, willing the weight of his intent upon her. Her proposition was beginning to interest him now, as his mind began to turn it over and see its possibilities.

"Tell me more about your dream."

Snape crossed his black-sleeved arms in front of him and looked down at the shorter girl.

Faith sighed in relief as he backed up, and unclenched her hands from her sides. She rolled her shoulders, getting the tension out of them. It was good he wasn't going to fight her, actually. She still hadn't gotten rid of all the sexual tension from the last time she'd fought someone and not finished it. The last thing she needed was to get more excited, she might explode or something.

"Yeah, wicked. So, I have a Watcher now. Take that, stupid old dreams! I totally kicked your ass."

The dark-haired girl walked over to the chair and flopped down on it, draping her slender body comfortably over it so that her legs were on one arm of the chair, and her back was resting against the other one. She looked at him, tilting her head backwards so that he looked upside down.

"Right, cool. I'll trust you, maybe, someday if you earn it. I don't really trust most people, cause they tend to die when I do. Okay, so, the dream. There was just a sense of urgency, and that I needed someone to watch over me and train me and stuff. Like, I guess I wasn't ready to be alone. All Slayers have Watchers, it's how the gig works, so I knew that I needed to find one. And, like, I saw a shadowy person, tall, dark hair, British accent... he looked over his shoulder at me and then, I knew."

She smiled, still perching upside down, waiting to see if he could decipher all that. It made sense to her, of course, but then she wasn't always the most coherent person ever.

Snape stood and watched her antics, listening closely to her explanation. Despite her extremely think accent, he was able to understand what she was saying, for the most part. Some of her jargon was still unclear to him.

"You are asking a lot of me Miss... Faith. You are asking me to be more than an advisor or a resource for you. You say you wish me to train you, to prepare you for something urgent, but what is it, my dear girl? Does your dream tell you this, as well? If you are unwilling to trust me, you will understand if I am as yet reluctant to trust you."

He saw great potential in being given the opportunity to train this girl. She was clearly very powerful, and, to an extent, she was completely willing to place herself in his hands. He was sure an... assistant such as she could come in very handy; however, he wasn't exactly clear on all the details of her proposal as she envisioned it. Above all, what was a Watcher? He understood the gist of the role, but he did not want to agree to any responsibilities he was not prepared to uphold.

The young woman raised her head once more so that she was looking at him rightside up this time. She tucked her long, dark hair behind her ears and smiled, still relieved that he had taken on this role. She'd been worried he would resist, but then, no one could really fight a prophetic dream. Obviously, he knew it would be pointless.

"Faith Lehane, but Faith works. Yeah, a Watcher is a trainer, an advisor, and... I dunno." She frowned and thought back to her previous Watchers. "They tell me what to do to make myself better, and I do it. Mostly, anyways. And they usually have their nose stuck in a boring book."

She raised her chin up and her face firmed with resolve. Clearly, he didn't know anything about her, and she would have to explain before he could be any use to her at all.

"I'm the Slayer... the only one, here. I dust vamps. I can also do demons and shit like that, really anything that is evil. I'm your girl! All you have to do is find ways to, like, make me into a better Slayer, and we're all five by five."

Snape listened intently to Faith with his arms crossed over his chest. He considered everything that she said. So, she was a Slayer of vampires and demons, and her Watcher's role was to help her reach her maximum potential in that role. He noted that she seemed willing, despite her hopelessly individualistic manner, to accept his instruction and direction. Interesting. There was only one problem he could see.

"My good Faith, that all sounds very well and good, but what use is it all here? Though there may well be vampires and demons among us, none of them can be slain! Not even, I would wager, by a Slayer."

Still, it was a pity. The idea of having a hellhound such as this one as his agent was... stimulating. A girl of his own, to mold, to prepare, to send forth to do his bidding, his dirty work. It touched something deep in his psyche.

"And, by the way, I assure you, the books I stick my nose into are never boring!"

Faith actually listened to him, which was a somewhat rare occurance. Despite the fact that she tended to respect very few people, some of those rare people had been her Watchers, and she was slightly more inclined to be polite to one. Only slightly, of course, and only in comparision with how she treated most people. But still, it was something.

"Yeah, I know, right? I was kind of wondering that, too. We're not supposed to fight but the dream told me I needed to find a Watcher, so here we are. I mean, the planet must have picked me for some reason, right?"

She raised an eyebrow at him and draped herself, if possible, even more comfortably across the chair. Lazily, she swung her legs as she continued to look at him. A smile quircked her lips.

"Hey, you know, whatever you say, Brainiac. Your thing, not mine. I'll deal."

Snape continued to regard Faith critically. She had heard his objection, and it seemed it didn't matter. She was determined to find a Watcher, and who was he to say it shouldn't be him. He had no idea what she was to do if she couldn't slay demons, but he was sure he would think of something.

"I had suspected that the Planet was choosing inhabitants based on its own deranged sense of humour, but since you've had this dream, perhaps the choice of you and I was not an accident."

He strode over to the chair Faith had flopped onto, and extended his hand.

"Fine. Let it be so. I will be your Watcher, and you will be my Slayer. I am scheduling our first training session for tomorrow morning, on the beach."

She even did him the great honor of sitting up, mostly, before she extended her own small hand and took his. She shook it firmly, just slightly harder than strictly necessary, but short of actually trying to crush his hand. She just had to show him she was stronger then him, not make him hurt a lot.

"Right, well, that sounds five by five with me, Skeletor. Wicked. You're a lot more... I dunno, darker than my last Watcher, but I can deal. I'm flexible."

She dropped his hand and then flopped down on the chair once more. She gave him a wry smile as she spoke.

"Oh, tomorrow morning? I dunno, I think that might conflict with my plans of doing absolutely nothing, but I guess I'll sacrifice for the training or whatever."

Snape was gratified when his new charge did him the "honour" of sitting up straight to shake his hand. It might not seem like much, but Snape sensed it was meaningful. In a way it felt good to have a new student. It was familiar. Setting up a training regimen would not be so different from scheduling classes.

"Yes, well, I know nothing about your previous Watchers, and I fully intend to do things my way. I will only tolerate your humourous teasings so far, my dear. I will see you tomorrow morning. Now, if you don't mind, I have some research to do."

She smirked at him a little, as if to say without words that he could do whatever she wanted, but she didn't have to respond. She was an adult, and didn't have to listen to him. But deep in her eyes, there was a growing sort of respect for him, that she didn't have for most people. Not that it would change her attitude in the slightest, but it was definately there.

"Right, whatever. Guess I'll see you tomorrow, then. I'll let you do your boring stuff now. Skeletor."

With an amused smile still firmly in place on her lips, she unfolded herself from the chair and headed for the library door. It would be good to get out of this weird place where books were everywhere. It just wasn't natural.

Snape watched Faith lift herself out of the library armchair and head for the door. He felt like something important had been accomplished, but it would take awhile to digest it all. All in all he was pleased. He turned towards the book stacks.

"Oh, one more thing. If you call my that... name again, you will find yourself in a lot of trouble. You may think I am dark, but you don't know the first thing about the extent of my powers."

He actually didn't expect that to have any effect on her, but he was fully prepared to teach her tomorrow.

"If you say so. Later, Brainiac."

It wasn't the same name, and she smirked at him over her shoulder as she said it. She was very sure that it would annoy him at least as much as 'Skeletor' would. She liked to push the limits.

She wasn't really worried that he could actually do much to her. She was undoubtedly much stronger than her and she was positive she could take him in a fight. So his threat, she basically ignored. With a cheeky wave over her shoulder at her new Watcher, she disappeared through the door.
