Day Six
Who: Ace & The Doctor
When: evening
What: fireworks...
Where: by the lake
Rating: G - PG for swearing maybe
Status: Complete

She was starting to like this planet -- just a little bit. A lot actually. Not to say she wanted to stay indefinitely, but she could keep herself occupied for some time if the planet continued to provide her with chemicals and substances of various explosive qualities from any planet she could think of. Chemicals she'd never been able to get her hands on before. Not to mention any kind of equipment she needed.

Of course, she probably looked more then a little goofy wheeling a little red wagon full of god knows what across the grounds, but she figured she shouldn't play with her new things in doors. Ace didn't want to accidentally blow the resort up. So she set up by the lake -- far enough away that people wouldn't be hurt, horses wouldn't be spooked, and if anything went wrong there was loads of water around. A small fold out table, two small burners, glass bottles of different colored liquids, blocks of X-27 (her favorite; an alien type of C-4...only better) and things she didn't even recognize.

The brunette was a self taught chemist. Perhaps not very safe, but she was very clever. Setting down a few marble sized explosives, her very own nitro9 (more like nitro-422, she was forever improving it, but nitro9 just had such a nice ring to it.) to compare with whatever she made.

It had been light out when she started, but when it came to explosives time just flew by so quickly. As much as she would've liked to continue -- she'd made it this long without incident, but playing with explosives at night would just be pushing her luck. Ace opted to finish playing with this last one before packing up, and wouldn't it just be her luck that this one would backfire on her. She was chucked back a few feet with the tips of her bangs singed a bit and her left hand a bit burnt, but otherwise unharmed and witness to an interesting display of fire works. The X-27, a touch of astrolite, and some red liquid she didn't recognize didn't just burst into flame -- it rocketed up in to the sky and exploded, sending down a shower of red, gold, and yellow sparks. Very pretty but with the potential to be very harmful if not for the force shield generator on her wrist to keep them from touching her, and with it she was able to bandage up her hand and watched the fireworks safely enough.

The Doctor had spent his day very unproductively, unless trying to confuse the restaurant staff by ordering dishes from all across the universe counted as productive. He'd even been quite impressed by their attempts at serving up some Gallifreyan specialties; they were clearly off-world replicas, but it was enough to keep him amused at the least.

The day seemed to draw to an end rather quickly, and by the time the sun started to dip below the horizon the Doctor decided it was high time he went to take another look at the TARDIS. If he could at least convince it to move in-planet he could explore Mirage a bit more fully, head out into the desert and see what was happening off the beaten-track.

Still, the Doctor was quite easily distracted, and on hearing a number of explosions followed by what could only be described as a fireworks display, he was intrigued. He followed the lights, giddy with the excitement of what he might have stumbled upon. Once he was close enough to spy the cause of the explosions, the Doctor's eyebrows quirked and his lips slipped into one of his signature smiles. It was the most obvious culprit.

"Should have known it was you. Some things never change," he called out, announcing his presence as he approached his old friend.

Ace sent a side long glance over her shoulder at hearing some one near, catching sight of the Doctor. She wasn't surprised the display had drawn someone's attention, explosions tended to do that, but it sounded like he knew her. Maybe she just heard wrong -- very possible as her ears were still ringing a bit -- because she certainly didn't recognize the man, and during her talk with Rose it had never been said that he'd regenerated, just his clothes had changed, and honestly she couldn't remember what the blond had said he was wearing now. The idea of her Professor in a leather jacket had stuck, and was to amusing to be bothered with anything else.

"I'd keep back a bit, slim. At least until they stop falling. They'll leave a nasty burn." She warned, rising to her feet as she spoke, and watching the last of the explosion fizzle off into nothing. After which she moved to clean up, expecting the other to leave her be now that the show was over. Not that she was anti-social or anything, but some of the embers had fallen on the table and it's contents, and she didn't want another accidental explosion so it took priority over some stranger.

When she called him 'slim', the Doctor couldn't help but snort with laughter. Of course. For the first few seconds the Doctor always seemed to forget that just because he recognised someone didn't necessarily mean they would recognise him, considering he did have a habit of changing faces rather rapidly. He smiled to himself, waiting for the fireworks to stop before he approached her again.

"Quite a collection you've got there. Improved the Nitro9 again, have you?" he asked, grinning widely and bouncing on his heels as he waited for her to figure it out.

"Nah. That was just a bit of nonsense. Playing..." She paused and looked back once it properly registered what he'd said. "What do you know 'bout it?" It took a second, and she looked him over a bit more carefully this time around. That wasn't right. The only people who knew about her nitro9 were in the SpaceFleet, dusted, or -- Ace chucked a towel at him, annoyed but unable to keep herself from grinning.

"You went and changed your face! Regenerated." She accused, as if insulted that he would do so without her permission. Just watching him though...He was so different. Older no doubt, but he looked great for his age. Much younger looking then when she new him. Not to mention the bouncing about, the goofy grin, better clothes -- Same eyes though.

"Figures. I'm not there to watch your back and you up and die." Ace said, leaving her things to move nearer to the Doctor, kind of disappointed to find she was shorter then him.

His grin grew so wide that it he seemed to be in danger of having his face crack in two as she started to catch on. As she threw the towel, he burst out laughing, taking a step back and letting it fall to the floor.

"Yeah! A few times now, actually," he told her, pulling a bit of a guilty expression. One regeneration was bad luck, three was just stupidity.

"I know, right? Never leave me unsupervised!" he agreed; really, he didn't do too well taking care of himself without someone there to watch out for him. "Ah, come here, you!" he insisted, closing the space between them and dragging her into an almost suffocating hug.

"A few!" Definitely insulted now. More then one regeneration, and he couldn't even be bothered to pop by, and show her his new face? How many times had she passed him in the street and not realized it? Obviously his companion wasn't doing too good a job watching out for him either. Her thoughts were cut off as he pulled her into a bear hug, eyes actually going wide for an instant in surprise.

"Oi! Covered in weapons and explosives, and if they go off I can't regenerate with you." Ace scolded. After a second though she relented and gave him a hug before pulling herself free.

"Look at you though. Nice new body! If I didn't know you so well, I might've fancied you." She said but obviously only joking with him. "What has kept you so busy, that you couldn't pay me a visit, Doctor?" Not Professor like she used to call him, he'd changed so much and that name -- He could be totally different now. Same person sure, but when every cell in your body changes several times -- how much of her Professor was really left? She'd have to wait, he'd have to earn that name back.

"How long has it been for you?" She asked. A year for her could have been ages for him. At least two years -- wasn't that how long Rose had said they'd traveled together? Probably much longer then that to warrant more then one regeneration.

The Doctor acted as if he hadn't heard her mention the explosives at all, swaying her from side to side and smiling into her shoulder before she pulled back again. "Yeah, it's a bit... different," he agreed, giving her a cheesy wink.

His expression changed as she asked about what had kept him so busy, the smile fading a little as he looked down at his shoes for a moment. "Oh, you know. This and that..." he pulled his eyebrows together, giving her a curious look. Did she know? Of course, it was possible that she might have heard, but her expression seemed to suggest otherwise.

"Quite a while... probably feels like longer. I don't know, I haven't really been keeping track properly," he admitted. Things always got a little blurry when he had to take the Time War into account. "How long has it been for you?" he asked, trying to inject some of his happiness back into his voice.

"Different." She repeated, a last appraising look before nodding slightly. "I like it though, and no goofy question marks all over the place. Kinda miss the hat though." Ace did like the panama hat he used to wear -- maybe she'd give the wardrobe a look and see if she could find it while they were here.

Her smile faded as well at watching his reaction, racking her brain for any thing she'd forgotten. Something that could have effected him. Ace didn't know about the time war though. She'd been taken before it had begun, but she did remember hearing hints of the Daleks getting stronger, and whispers of the Time Lords getting involved. Rumors of great beings, that wouldn't die and appeared through time and space -- only a few knew their names. It had to be that, right? She had thought of joining the Space Fleet again because of those rumors, front lines and all...To help him because there had been no doubt in her mind he'd return to help.

"A year or so, but can't be sure either. Getting as bad as you when it comes to keeping track. Went back to 18th century France for a while, but had to leave and go back to using the name Ace -- Dorothee McShane is wanted for murder and treason there now. Neither are true though..." She answered but not too keen on jumping right off the subject. She wanted to know what had happened -- That instinct to look out for him kicking in, which meant making him talk...Because knowing him he probably kept whatever it was upsetting him secret, and if she knew maybe she could get back to her time and do something to change it. Changing big events was against the rules, she knew that, but for the Doctor surely an exception could be made?

"Oh, I know! I used to be such a fan of hats," he agreed, scrunching up his nose a little. "Nothing works for this body, though. I think it's the hair! I wouldn't want to ruin the big hair," he pointed out, running his fingers through his hair as he spoke.

"Yeah, I was going to say! Even if I had decided to pay a visit you're not exactly easy to track down these days!" he pointed out, waggling a finger at her like a disapproving parent, although his smile told a different story. Oh, he was so proud of her.

The Doctor wasn't naive enough to believe that the topic would be changed for good, but he was glad for the slight distraction. Telling Sarah-Jane had been difficult, but he knew that telling Ace would be so much worse. And he would have to tell her soon, because he knew that the longer he left it the harder it would be.

"You're one to talk! I'll get a whisper of you, and you're gone before I arrive." She shot back but with a grin all her own. It wasn't often Ace went chasing after him anyways, but every once and a while she would get curious as to what he was up to. It was nice to hear stories now and then as well, just to know that he was alright.

The brunette moved to sit by the lake, figuring it was nice and quiet out so they could just sit here a while and chat. They had plenty to catch up on, after all. "I hear you're stuck here too." She started. "Ran into Rose the other day. She found me in the TARDIS trying to fix my motorcycle. Which reminds me...You changed the theme too! I liked the old one. The TARDIS kept my old room and lab looking the same though, thankfully. Didn't get the chance to check the weapons store -- " She said, trailing off for a second. Had she ever told the Doctor about keeping some of her weapons stored on the TARDIS? He'd always disapproved, so it wasn't hard to think she'd kept it quiet, but at the same time he had to have found it at some point in all this time...

The Doctor gave a dramatic shrug and pulled a face; really, would she expect any less of him? "Can't help myself. It takes a planet kidnapping me to make me stay still for more than a couple of days," he explained, sighing a little at the injustice os it all.

"Yeah, the old girl just won't budge. I thought she might be able to move in-planet, at least. I'd like to see what's out there. It can't be all resort." Really, experience had taught him that taking something at face value was never a smart option, and he wanted to see the real planet.

He nodded eagerly when she mentioned the changing theme. "Yeah, I thought it was about time for a change. A little less minimalist and a little more..." he trailed off, not quite certain how that sentence could finish in a positive light. "I want to say chaotic, but in a way that sounds less messy!" he laughed slightly; really, with the amount of stuff lying around the console room, you'd think he didn't have a tool room. Still, he didn't have time for organising, he just left the ship to her own devices most of the time.

"Oh, I couldn't change your room! You always have a place onboard... I take it you still carry your key, then?" he asked in a teasing sing-song.

"I'm sure you could use the rest." All that running around, she was sure that a little break here would be good for him. That and if any one could get them off this planet it would be the Doctor.

"I can give you a hand with her. A fresh pair of eyes, and a second set of hands -- we'll have her up in no time...And if that doesn't work, we can just take my bike. I've been wondering what's out in that desert too." Ace had been planning on exploring out there. It would be loads easier with the TARDIS, but her motorcycle would do, and she'd survived deserts plenty of times before.

"Course I still have it." The brunette said, showing him the key hanging around her neck. A little piece of home, not that she would ever say so. "Now come sit and talk to me." She instructed, patting the grass beside her. "Tell me 'bout these regenerations. What happened?"

"Yeah, I suppose so.. but I've nearly been here a week, that's enough rest for anyone!" he insisted, although he was sure there were many people who would disagree.

"Oh, definitely. I think I'm getting much too impatient to actually think logically about it, so your perspective would be useful. Somehow I don't think my hammering the console with a mallet is helping," he laughed softly, but it was clear from his tone that he wasn't joking.

He gave her a slow nod and moved to sit down next to her. If he could just distract her a little longer with the story of the first regeneration that would have to suffice.

"Well, when I had the face that you remember, I stepped out of the TARDIS right into the middle of a gang shooting and ended up in some American hospital getting the bullets removed," he started, rolling his eyes slightly, signifying that he found this an incredibly boring way to die. "It was nasty, they kept trying to knock me out, there was some big commotion when they were convinced my chest x-ray was a hoax with the two hearts. I did keep trying to tell the surgeon that she was going to kill me, but she thought I was just delirious on the anesthetic," he explained with a grin. It hadn't been funny at the time, but the look on the surgeons' faces had been rather priceless.

"I regenerated in one of those morgue refrigerator things. Creepiest place you can possibly wake up, except perhaps a coffin!"

She chuckled slightly, thinking the same. Most would believe a week was hardly much of a vacation, but for him -- both of them really -- it was too long to be just sitting around. Especially when your used to jumping through time, constantly exploring something new.

"I'll come by and give her a look. Still have to fix a few things with my motorcycle, parts got fried from being pulled out of the time vortex." She had always been good with mechanics, and used to toy with the TARDIS when she traveled with the Doctor. It was lucky too, that she was here, as it sounded like he was getting more then a little frustrated with it.

When he explained about the regeneration, Ace looked near horrified. Especially about waking up in the morgue drawer. How he could even think about that and still grin was beyond her. "You know you can check what's outside the door before you go rushing out." Ace rolled her eyes slightly, knowing that he wouldn't. It was half the fun, running headlong into something new. "My poor professor waking up in a morgue drawer." She reached over and let her thumb brush his nose affectionately, mimicking the gesture Seven used to do to her. Kind of upset that her Doctor had died that way, and alone from the sounds of it.

"Please tell me the others were because you did something amazing and heroic? Not accidentally walking into a fight."

"Good, we can help each other out. I'll probably be able to find you some makeshift spare parts somewhere," he suggested; he seemed to have a ready store of just about every gadget a person could need, even if it sometimes meant holding them together with elastic bands. "I promise not to smash your bike with a mallet," he added as and afterthought.

"I can, but I rarely do. I remember a time when I was really fussy about checking oxygen levels and all that nonsense. Now I just run out and... get shot, apparently!" he grinned, as if it were all a wonderful game. His smile grew even wider and she touched his nose. Of course, every one of his companions was dear to him, but there had always been something special about Ace.

"Aaah, sort of, yeah," he nodded, the grin faltering once again. He did wonder for a second if he could skip to his most recent regeneration and work his way back, but he wasn't sure she'd let him get away with that. "Time War," he said simply, addressing the grass instead of the woman next to him. Of course, there had been many time wars before, so his two words weren't exactly an explanation, but he supposed it was a start.

She chuckled lightly and rolled her eyes. There was no doubt in her mind that they'd be able to fix the motorbike, and no rubber band parts if she had anything to say about it. "You better not." She said. There used to be two motorcycles, but her last one had been destroyed some time ago. Which only made her all the more thankful that the Doctor was here to help her fix it up.

"Better then me, I s'ppose. Least you've a door. I show up, out of the vortex, completely out in the open." Ace shrugged slightly. It had yet to backfire on her, but knock on wood and all that...

She grinned as the small gesture pulled a wider smile, pleased that he remembered, but unfortunately it didn't last. There was that look again, and the only explanation she got was 'Time War.' He had to know she wouldn't accept that. "A mate of mine came back from Arcadia, said there are rumors of your lot getting involved. I was going to go back. The Space Fleet set up a base there. Thought I'd find you." Ace said, hoping to prompt him to explain -- to say whether the rumors were true, or if it was something different.

He did manage a small chuckle when she mentioned the benefits of having doors. "Yeah, true. Those doors have been very useful at times!" he agreed.

He nodded along solemnly as Ace explained what she had heard of the war. He shook his head, exhaling sharply as she mentioned her thoughts about joining them. "Well, I'm glad you didn't," he said softly, really meaning it.

After what seemed like such a long silence, but in reality was only a few seconds, he somehow managed to force the words out of his mouth. "We lost," he told her, forcing himself to look up again. "Gallifrey, it's... gone. I'm the only one left."

The silence lasted a while longer. She wasn't sure what to say. 'Sorry' seemed to be the most appropriate sentiment, but she would never say something like that. Just thinking that the whole planet was gone, that beautiful planet, his homeland, family and friends -- How could a 'sorry' ever begin to help? Instead she let her hand creep over to grasp his lightly.

"Others might've survived." The brunette said softly, thoughts drifting for a moment to Romana. She'd liked the Lady President, and hated to think she'd never see her again. "You always had hope, Professor." Ace couldn't help the old nickname slipping out. He was different, but he was still the Doctor, and Ace wanted him to know she was there for him.

He slowly shook his head as she suggested that others might have survived. "No. I watched it burn. I... I made it happen," he told her, that twinge of guilt never really leaving him no matter how many people he told. Of course, he knew that it had been the right option, the only option... but it was quite a burden to carry.

"Plus, I'd know," he told her, tapping the side of his head. It was strange how he'd grown used to the silence he'd thought would haunt him forever.

Ace listened as he admitted to being the cause, no judgment in her gaze. He wouldn't have done it unless there had been no other choice. What bothered her is how he'd given up. "Fine. I'll have hope then. Even you can't know everything." She leaned back and looked up at the sky, the stars here that looked just like the ones at home. Millions of stars in millions of galaxies all through time, and he couldn't find reason to believe that another Time Lord was out there somewhere...

"At least you're not alone." She looked up at him. "You've got Rose -- and you always have me." It wasn't much, but it was all she could offer. Ace would listen, and she could understand better then most.

His expression softened, the corners of his lips curving back into a smile; her attitude was just the Ace he remembered. Even when everything seemed dark she was trying to convince him of the impossible. As much as the logical part of him wanted to tell her exactly why that wasn't possible, he just couldn't do it. "Thanks. Maybe one day you'll be gloating about that," he smiled.

"Yeah, I know. She's been good for me, you know? Oh, that was the third regeneration..." he suddenly remembered why they'd been on the topic in the first place. He turned to lean on his elbow facing her, as if telling her a very odd bedtime story. "Apparently even destroying a planet and committing genocide doesn't get rid of Daleks! Year 200,000... I was transmatted to this gamestation orbiting Earth, and it somehow turned into another Dalek invasion!" he explained, rolling his eyes.

"There were so many of them, and after a while it seemed like the only option was to blow up the gamestation." He seemed to be developing a habit of blowing things up to get rid of the Daleks. "I made the TARDIS take Rose home, but she wasn't having any of it. Took a bloody tow truck and ripped the console open, absorbed the heart of the TARDIS, it brought her back and she... used it to split them all into atoms, basically! I regenerated because I absorbed it myself taking it out of her again," he explained. No matter how many times he told the story it never lost it's wow factor.

She looked back at him when he turned on his side to continue telling her about his regenerations, scowling at talk of Daleks returning. "The damn things are like cockroaches!" Ace grumbled. It was infuriating; they'd destroy thousands, and more would simply rise to take their place. Hunks of metal with the disgusting looking creatures inside. She might've even had some sympathy if the Daleks had been capable of something more then killing, but they were made to have no other purpose.

"You were going to blow up Daleks and didn't call me. You know, I'm really not feelin' the love anymore." Ace teased as she considered what he'd said Rose had done. It was impressive, she had to admit. She hadn't expected Rose to be anything more then a pretty new companion when they'd met. "I underestimated her, I guess. If she keeps you safe, she's good in my book -- maybe I'll leave you two a bit of my new nitro9 for next time you get in trouble though." She remembered when the Professor didn't like her using explosives so much, but it seemed since regenerating that had changed.

The brunette grinned and reached down to the small pouches on her belt, retrieving two small marble looking things. Ace loved to show them off, but getting to show the Doctor...She supposed some part of her still wanted him to be proud of her like when she had been younger. "Look, half the size and four times the power. The light blue one will explode when you throw it, and the white one is activated by water or saliva. It'll go off about 30 seconds after you take it out of the water or your mouth, but if you accidentally swallow one they dissolve and at worse you get a bit of heartburn. They're great if your captured." Ace explained, knowing the later from experience.

"Oh, she definitely takes good care of me," he agreed, nodding enthusiastically. "Saved my life the day I met her!" he told her, frowning a little as he realised his mistake. "No, the day after, but the day I met her I blew up her workplace, so I'll excuse the delay!" he admitted, his frown quickly changing back to his smile.

"More blowing up, I know. You must have rubbed off on me more than I realised," he teased. "Anyway, you should know, I only take the best. She's no exception," he said definitely. His interest peaked as she took out her new and improved version of her nitro9. He nodded with interest; he was impressed, and it certainly showed in his eager eyes and beaming smile. "Well, I do still say that you don't solve a problem by blowing it up, but I've certainly come across a few exceptions to the rule lately," he explained, "Daleks are a definite exception, so I might just take you up on that. Very clever, Ace. very clever indeed!"

"Good to hear. Though it would be nice if you could manage not to nearly get yourself killed every time you're left alone." She rolled her eyes, but knew better then to expect any different from him. Ace still worried though. It seemed he was going through his regenerations rather quickly lately, though it was hard to tell with him exactly how long there had been in between, but still.

"I'll definitely leave you some. A gift to pass on to those metal toe-rags next time they show up." She grinned, pocketing the nitro again, before looking back up at him.

She lifted a hand to touch his cheek, gently moving his head from side to side. "Still strange. This young face and big hair. You must be nearly a thousand years old now, yeah?" She was still getting used to it, but certain things he did, and when he looked proud of her she could see her old professor in that young face. "Haven't been Merlin yet, have you? I want to see that one." There was no telling if the Doctor would actually be Merlin, it was some naff old witch and some knights that had said so, but that wasn't saying it wasn't possible.

"Oh, where's the fun in it if you're not living on the edge?" he asked, a cheshire grin plastered onto his face. "I promise, when I'm on my last body, I'll try my best to make it last. Mind you... I quite like this one, so maybe I'll try a tiny bit harder," he suggested, holding his thumb and forefinger barely a centimetre apart to show her just how tiny. "Mind you, already lost a hand barely 24-hours into this regeneration, so I'd say the being careful didn't get off to a good start!" he giggled.

"Lovely, I'm sure they'll be thrilled, I'll make sure to mention your name when I present the gift," he nodded, certainly a lot chirpier than he had been a few minutes previous.

"Yeah, getting on a bit," he admitted; he had definitely lost count along the way somewhere, but he wasn't about to admit that. Really, he ought to know his own age, but he didn't exactly lead a linear life. He snorted with laughter as she mentioned Merlin. "Oh, no! You're getting front row seats to that one, and you know it!" he exclaimed, through fits of laughter.

"Bit harder then that." She said, pushing his fingers apart a little more. "Come get me when you're on your last go. I'll play body guard. Literally." Ace grinned, but there was a hint of sadness there. She'd like to see his last regeneration, keep him from getting himself killed. Of course, she also knew she couldn't protect him from everything, and wasn't sure she could handle seeing him really die. The Doctor disappeared from her life now and again, but the brunette always knew he was out there somewhere. He was a constant in her life, sort of.

"Oh good. I've been trying to make a name for myself with their sort, but it's hard to get the word around when I'm always blowing them to pieces. Maybe I could send a card before hand?" She suggested with a small chuckle. Imagining sending a 'Thinking of you' card to the Dalek fleets.

She'd lost count as well where it came to her age, but really wasn't bothered by it. You're only as old as you feel, right? When asked she generally stuck around her late twenties.

"I better." Ace said, laughing herself, and happy to see he was in much better spirits, having moved away from the topic of the Time War. "I tried to go back to that time, you know, see if it really did end up being you -- Never could get it right though. Always ended up too soon or too late." She always wondered if maybe it was because of the Professor, some how he was blocking her from crossing that point in his timeline.

The Doctor rolled his eyes and moved so his hands were about shoulder width apart. "OK, that much harder, okay?" he half-teased, smiling affectionately at her. As much as he doubted he would ever start being careful, it was good to know that people cared enough about him to worry about it. "Although, just because no-one's made it past thirteen doesn't mean I'll necessary stop there. Never did like sticking to their silly rules. I plan for fourteen, just to go out on a logical absurdity," he grinned widely.

"Oh, you should. I'm quite proud of my various Dalek nicknames. I'm a bloody legend! The Oncoming Storm, the Bringer of Darkness, the Destroyer of Worlds!" he said, dramatically emphasising each name as if he were a voiceover introducing a world-famous act onto a stage. "It's like some comic book super-villain. I love it," he added, beaming at thought, which might have seemed a bit odd to anyone else. If any other race had such a nickname for him, he might have taken it personally - from the Daleks? He wouldn't have wanted anything less.

"Ha, well you'll just have to be patient for once," he teased, nudging her with his shoulder. "So, you want a hand tidying up? I promise I won't break anything or burn my face off," he laughed softly.

"Much better!" She laughed and nodded, pleased to hear about not sticking to the thirteen rule as well. Ace had never been quite sure how that whole thing worked, but didn't bother questioning it. She supposed it didn't matter so much how it worked so long as the Doctor kept on living.

"Ooh. The Oncoming Storm. I like that one, very ominous." Ace nodded in approval, wishing she had something like that. Though 'Time's Vigilante' was a good enough name for now. She'd plenty of time to work out another once they got off the Planet. At this rate, she was getting a growing list of things to do, assuming they did manage to get home.

"Fine." She groaned, though still grinning as he nudged her, and throwing a glance to the toys she'd brought out. "Yeah, could use a hand." Ace pushed herself up and offered a hand out to the Doctor. "Careful of the red stuff. It's what caused the fireworks earlier."

"Yes, it's definitely a title to be proud of, especially when those damned things are involved," he agreed, accepting her hand and hopping to his feet with very little grace.

"Consider me warned. I'll let you deal with the red stuff!" he decided, moving to look at the explosives properly for the first time. "I take it this is the planets idea of fulfilling your every need?" he asked as he started putting the stoppers back into the various bottles.

"Sure is. I woke up this morning with all of this laid out on my desk for me." She grinned, moving to put some of the more volatile chemicals out of the way. The planet was taking very good care of her aside from the whole being a prison thing.

"You know I found an old Hard Rock Cafe t-shirt in the wardrobe here, from Ice World where we met." Ace had lost her original one, but found a lot of her favorite clothes were here, or copies of them anyway. "It was nice, but still kind of unnerving, you know -- that this planet thing can get even tiny details like that out of your head. I'm not used to things with this kind of power not trying to kill me." She said while packing up her things into the little red wagon.

"Well, aren't you lucky?" he laughed. The planet sure knew how to keep its guests happy, but something about it just seemed to sinister to the Doctor.

"It can be a little unnerving. Our room has a TARDIS-like hum... and every time I want something it just seems to be in the first place I look. It's... disturbing," he agreed, shaking his head a little. He wasn't content to just accept these facts like most of the residents seemed to be. Sentient planets were one thing, psychic and verging on magical planets were another.

"I'm quite lucky that I've got the TARDIS with me, even if she is a bit useless at the moment. It's nice to have the original copy of everything with me. I did half wonder what the planet would do if I just refused to leave the ship. Might get bored and kick me off the planet," he laughed, gently placing some of the bottles back into her little wagon. "Mind you, I won't risk it. They might just take her off me, and we can't have that."

"I don't know that I'd say lucky. The planet is just smart enough to keep me happy." Ace grinned. "We both know what happens to things I don't like." She stated with a quick look to the explosives, and an amused smile playing across her lips.

"I don't think it would take her away. The planet seems to be all about keeping us happy." She doubted he would stay in the TARDIS for good anyways, way to restless and curious for that. Ace couldn't stay holed up like that either, not even with a room full of explosives to play with, one place for too long was maddening.

She folded up the small table and fastened it on top of the wagon again with little bungee cords, and grabbing the handle. "You heading back to the TARDIS, or going back towards the dorms with me?" The brunette asked.

"I do actually wonder what the planet would do if we just started some sort of rebellion," he said thoughtfully. "I imagine the golems would... do something," he finished, not really certain what to suggest the golems might actually do.

"Well, I'd certainly hope not." She was right, though. he was far too curious to figure out the planet to spend all his time locked inside the TARDIS. "You know, they can sort of indicate yes and no. I wonder if we could just figure out the right way to ask we might get somewhere," he suggested. It would take a long time, but if they worked on shifts they might eventually get something useful. "I don't know, but if I can't get her shifting, we're definitely taking a bike ride out into that desert!" he grinned; if the planet thought unfavourable conditions would stop him exploring, it was sadly mistaken.

"Uuh... we could head to the TARDIS, see if that weapon store of yours is still there. You can shove this stuff in there, if you like," he suggested.

"I do too, but I think I'll give it a while before causing any trouble. See if something happens." She still wondered why they were brought here, surely not just to populate the place? Maybe after enough people were here the planet would give them some indication of what it really wanted.

"You think they can write? Give 'em a pad and paper or a keyboard, and we could get decent answers?" She added, not sure what level of intelligence these things had, but figured chances were that it was linked to the planet somehow which would imply some power of thought at least. "I'm up for a ride in the desert, no problem." Ace grinned, almost laughing at the idea of him hanging on to her on the back of the bike.

"Good idea. I'll have all this for later too, if we get to leave." She headed towards the TARDIS with him.

"Sometimes keeping a low profile is the best option, but I can't say I'm too skilled at such techniques," he reminded her; he was actually impressed he'd not drawn too much attention to himself as of yet.

"I have no idea, but it would certainly be worth trying. I suppose they can understand us after all. If not write, maybe they could sketch. We could get information pictionary style," he suggested; it was intended as a joke, but he supposed it wasn't too far fetched at all.

"Excellent. Maybe I'll get out my old leather jacket especially for your amusement," he teased, poking her lightly in the ribs.

"Ah, yes. A lovely present for our friends from Skaro," he grinned, leading the way back to the TARDIS, just like old times.

"Don't need to tell me that." She said, remembering all to well. They could never just blend in, avoid trouble, when they'd been traveling. Granted, it was easier here where everyone was completely out of place.

She chuckled at the idea of pictionary with the golems, not sure if it would actually work, but it was an amusing enough thought either way. There was no harm in trying either.

"As great as that would be, don't you think a leather jacket is a bit much for a trip through the desert?" She raised a brow curiously as he poked her, some of these new quirks of his were kind of weird, and so different from what she was used to. Sure, he'd been a little weird before too, playing the spoons, and tapping her nose, but he seemed a lot more open and immature then before.

"Speaking of presents, I've got one for you in my bike." It was a small thing, but she was sure he would appreciate it far more then she did. Her bike still rested beside the TARDIS anyways, so she could get it for him on the way.

"Hey, I haven't done too badly so far!" he insisted, pretending to be insulted by her lack of faith but... not quite managing it. "It's quite easy here. Although I'm already getting sick of explaining my name," he added, scrunching up his nose slightly. Really, he was quite used to people being confused by his title, but having met so many people so quickly just seemed to emphasise the issue.

He narrowed his eyes, taking in her logical comment on the jacket. "You know, I never really thought of it that way. Used to wear the thing everywhere, but you know what I get like with my outfits," he said with a little smile. "It's massive on me now, anyway," he shrugged.

"Oh, really? Aww, I love presents!" he grinned, a little skip in his step.

"You could just start going by Smith again." She suggested. It was a generic name, but people were likely to accept it a little easier then just 'the Doctor.'

"Yeah. Did I mention how glad I was this regeneration has better taste in clothes? Even if the old question mark pullover kinda grew on me." Ace was surprised at how normal he looked. She'd seen his wardrobe, the ridiculous clothes housed there, and his suit was surprisingly tame. "Maybe you can just show me the jacket some time."

Ace grinned at his reaction, and tried to remember where exactly on her bike the gift was. Eventually they reached the TARDIS, her motorcycle parked beside it. The brunette opened the storage bag on the back, sifting through it, and pulling out a number of things. "I can never find anything in here." She commented, reaching deep in the bag (which was bigger on the inside, of course.) "Ah ha!"

"Okay, so it's little and silly, but if anyone can appreciate that sort of thing it's you." Ace pulled out a book (The Time Machine because it seemed appropriate) and opened it to where a Schlenk Blossom was pressed flat between the pages. She offered the book with the flower to him.

"A little piece of Gallifrey. Leela picked it while we were there, whims of pregnant women, I guess...She gave it to me before we left. I'm glad I kept it now." She couldn't bring back his home, but the small flower would likely mean a lot more to him then it would to her, laying in her motorcycle. After all this, knowing what she did, when Ace got home she considered trying to find her old Doctor and taking him up on the offer of attending the academy. Being a Time Lord (Lady, whatever) seemed awful stuffy to her, but at least that way he wouldn't be alone after the Time War. (She didn't even bother entertaining the idea that she could stop that war.)

"Yeah, it might be the easiest option," he agreed; it was an incredibly boring name, but it did help him blend in most of the time.

"Oh, right! Yeah, pretty sharp, eh?" he commented, giving her a cheesy wink. "Even if I do get funny looks for going fishing in a suit," he grinned. The planet would have to work harder than that to get him out of his beloved suit. "I will. It was all quite tame for me, that particular regeneration. No bright colours or anything!" he explained, as if such a thing was almost unthinkable... which is sort of was given his record. "Between you and me... I was a moody bugger sometimes. Terribly big nose," he added with a disgusted expression. "And ears," he added after a pause.

He watched with curiosity as Ace rummaged through her bag in search of his present. As she presented it to him, a slow smile spread across his face; not the manic grin of before, but something more subtle and touched. "Oh, Ace! That's so..." he trailed off, as she passed the book and flower to him. "Thank you," he said simply, failing to finish his sentence, almost afraid he'd get ridiculously sentimental over something so small.

"It's just like end of the book, too. When he's got the flowers the time traveler brought back. To witness that even when mind and strength had gone, gratitude and a mutual tenderness still lived on in the heart of man," he quoted, clearly having read the book one too many times.

"You sat still long enough to go fishing?" She teased. "No bright colors on this one either. Finally acting your age?" Ace had no doubt he was still as eccentric as always, it just wasn't so outwardly obvious anymore. She supposed it made sense though, especially the last regeneration being all moody -- what could you expect from someone who had lost his home, friends, family. (Though Ace had to say that his family hadn't been the greatest in her opinion.)

Smiling softly at he took the book, she was definitely glad she hadn't tossed out that old flower. After all, Ace wasn't the sort to keep girly things like that typically, but it was one of the little nick-knacks she kept to remind her of the Doctor. (Leela, Romana, and the others of well too.) "Your welcome. That's what I'm here for, taking care of my daft old Professor."

Ace shrugged at the quote. She'd only read the book once before, so she'd actually forgotten that little extra thing at the end, but it made it a little more fitting. She moved back to pull her little red wagon into the TARDIS, looking forward to seeing her old weapons store, even if they'd probably all be outdated by now.

"They forced me to," he explained. there was pretty much no way he'd go fishing voluntarily. "I don't see how it's fun or entertaining. You sit there for ages getting leg cramp and sunburn," he whined, apparently still not quite over the injustice of it all. "Plus, I threw my fish back because I felt guilty!" he said, rather exasperated by the whole experience.

"What would I do without you, eh?" he asked, giving her a sort of affectionate nudge with his shoulder. he placed the blossom carefully between the pages of the book once more and followed her into the TARDIS.

"Oh yeah? That was the day I showed up then. I had to go white water rafting. Met an elf." She chuckled, pleased that at least her mandatory activity was more interesting then his had been. It was also kind of funny to think of him throwing a fish back cause he felt bad, hell she could almost picture him apologizing to the thing.

"You went and got killed three times." Ace answered as they entered the TARDIS, and she led the way to her old weapons store. It was only a few doors down from her old room, and stepping inside -- it was pretty empty. The wagon of chemicals and toys would help fix that but still. She had more weapons in her bike then this. Most of it was explosives, her nitro9, a few souvenirs from their run-ins with Daleks, Cybermen, Cheetah people, her old bat that the Doctor had dipped in the Hand of Omega, and a big ol' gun she'd stolen off the U.N.I.T guys.

"Score." She grinned and took the old bat from it's place on the wall. Though she did stop to stare sadly at the broken old spear that used to belong to Karra, and the knife the master had used to kill her -- She barely knew the Cheetah woman, but she still felt that connection now and then, somewhere buried inside her was a link to her old 'sister.'
