Who: Rose and the Doctor
What: Arriving on the Planet
Where: Just outside the ranch
When: Today, just after this.
Rating: PG? If that?
Status: Complete, threaded

Rose kept her hand in the Doctor's swinging their joined hands between them as they started toward the door. She pushed it open, first noticing how warm it was as they stepped outside. "I don't think this is our stop," she said, glancing up to the Doctor. "Not that that'll keep us from exploring."

She tilted her head, sniffing. "It smells like...animals. And grass." She idly wondered where on earth- well. In the universe- they had ended up. "Any ideas? I don't know."

And then suddenly there were...creatures, walking in their direction. Rose slowed in her tracks, bringing a hand up to shade her eyes. "Wha- Can you see what those are? They don't look like anything I've ever seen."

"Well, it's certainly a far cry from frozen mineral lakes!" he grinned, gazing up and down at the lush green that now surrounded them.

He took a deep breath as she commented on the smell. "Ah, fresh air! Animals, yes! And... hay. And... manure. Lovely," he commented, pulling a bit of a face at this last observation. "Some sort of farming community maybe..." he suggested, running his free hand thoughtfully through his hair.

He scrunched up his eyes as he tried to get a look at the creatures moving toward them. "Oh, maybe it's the farmers!" he said, bouncing a little in excitement. Their appearance didn't faze him at all, but rather seemed to fill him with a sort of childlike excitement. "No, doesn't look like anything I recognise... huh. Well, they don't seem to be pointing guns at us or baring their massive blood-coated teeth, so I'd say we're all right!" he laughed, giving her a little nudge with his shoulder before he gave the creatures an eager wave.

Rose scrunched up her nose at the mention of blood-coated teeth. "No, they seem- are they wanting us to follow them?" She frowned slightly as the creatures came to a stop, looking at them, and then turned to start walking off. Okay, that was really strange.

She looked up to the Doctor, then took his hand again. "Might as well, yeah?" Oh, that smell was going to get to her. She hoped the whole of this place didn't smell like that. The creature stopped, looking back to them when they hadn't started moving just yet, and Rose started after it, dragging the Doctor behind her.

"Oh, so they do." That was odd; it was almost as thought the creatures had been expecting them to arrive. "Maybe they're going to take us to their leader," he said cheesily, giving her a cheeky grin. "Or, you know, invite us to a tea party," he added with a little giggle.

"Yeah, why not! Adventure awaits, m'lady!" he agreed, half-skipping along as she pulled him after her. "They're not the chatty type, are they?" he suggested, raising an eyebrow as they were lead on in silence.

"I could go for some tea. Lunch sounds good!" Okay, so it hadn't been all that long since she'd eaten, but hey! She never said no to food! Well. Rarely. Anyways!

"No, they don't seem to be. I wonder where they are." They walked, and Rose looked up as they saw a large building. "Looks fancy," she commented, stepping closer to the Doctor's side. "But...relatively normal?"

"Well, I dunno. It really depends what they serve up for lunch round these parts!" he commented; the Doctor had developed a pretty easy-going attitude to food over the centuries. It wouldn't exactly be much good being a fussy eater while traveling the cosmos. Still, sometimes he did have to draw a line. Glass, for example. A lunch of glass would be awful.

The Doctor frowned slightly as he looked up at the building, sniffing the air again as if waiting for something to give away their location. "Yeah, it is pretty normal. You know, if it wasn't for these guys I might even have said it was... well, Earth, don't you think?" he asked, shrugging with confusion. "Perhaps they modeled it off of a classic Earth," he suggested, realising a little to let that the creatures had stopped moving as he bashed straight into one of them. "Oof, sorry! Heeeey, are you made of stone and stuff like that?" he asked, taking a step back but receiving no answer to his query. "I'll take that as a 'mind your own business', then!" he commented under his breath.

"Smells like barbecue," she replied, sniffing the air again. As they reached the building, the smell of manure became less pronounced. "I wonder if they have any chips..." She looked around again before her gaze moved back to these creatures. "They...look almost human. In form, except for the made of rock and dirt bit..." She frowned slightly, then giggled as the Doctor ran into one. "But yeah. Does look a bit like Earth to me."

"Yeah, definitely humanoid of some kind..." he agreed, peering a little too curiously at one of the creatures. "That is really kind of weird. He has.. eyelashes... eyelashes of stone! My God, you're a masterpiece!" he exclaimed, not even getting a smile for his enthusiasm.

Instead, the creature pointed silently to a stone tablet. "Welcome to Mirage!" the Doctor started to read, thrilled to figure out where they were. "Thankyou! Never heard of it!" he commented.

Rose was surprised that the creature seemed to have no reaction to the Doctor peering so closely at him. She turned to the tablet as the creature pointed, reading it silently. Her eyes widened as she continued to read it, and she looked to the Doctor. "Wait. Is that saying that we can't leave? Ever?"

That certainly grabbed his attention, and the Doctor's eyes grew a little wide as he read the plaque over and over in disbelief. "What?! No, no... we're not looking for a new home, thanks. Must be a mistake. Got the wrong people," he insisted, although as he read the tablet one last time he shot Rose a look of disgust.

The only response from the golem was to place a room key upon the stone. "Yeah, we won't be needing that. Because we are leaving. About... now!" the Doctor insisted, but the golem gave a slow and steady shake of his head, pushing the key toward them with increasing urgency.

Rose winced at the look he gave her-- God, that did not sound promising. "I don't- they've got to let us go." She bit her lower lip, but the golem merely shook its head. Sighing, she stepped forward to take the key. C222. "It's got a number on it. Think we should at least check it out?"

"Well, technically they don't have to, but this is starting to sound more like a prison than a home," he said ominously. He scrunched up his nose in distaste as she suggesting taking a look at the room, but it seemed like they didn't have much choice. They weren't normal people, they would work out a way to leave. "Right. If we can beat Satan, we can beat this planet, too!" he insisted, before nodding to the stone man to lead on.

"Right. Of course!" she exclaimed, with a bit more enthusiasm than she actually felt. She twirled the key through her fingers-- nearly dropping it in the process-- before taking the Doctor's hand again and remaining close by his side as they turned to follow the golem, who had begun walking again. "We'll be alright, Doctor, yeah? We've gotta be."

The Doctor gave her hand a little squeeze and gave her a smile of encouragement as they started after their guide. "Yeah, course we will!" he insisted with a little more certainty than he actually felt. "We'll play along, have a go at horseriding or something! They've made a mistake. Think we're guests or something. I've been to leisure planets before! It'll be... different!" he grinned, failing to mention that the last leisure planet he'd been to nearly imprisoned him for a murder he didn't commit.

Rose smiled, though it didn't quite meet her eyes. It wasn't long before the Golem had slowed, pointing to a door. "I think this is it," she said, pulling the key out and stepping forward to push it into the lock. It turned easily and she looked back to the Doctor. "Suppose we may as well, yeah?"

"Yeah, but if this room isn't up to par, I'm going to have to speak to your manager!" the Doctor said, wagging a finger at the golem. Any excuse to get to meet whoever was running this place... although he could have sworn that the stoney face was actually smirking at him. "Let's see what's behind the blue door!" he exclaimed in the manner of a gameshow host.

She couldn't help but laugh, pushing the door open and taking a couple of steps into the room before pausing in her tracks. Her smile faded as she took in the appearance of the room; there was a faint glow and something about it reminded her of the TARDIS. A lot. "Um. Doctor?"

The Doctor frowned, looking about the room that seemed to have a greenish glow despite any apparant light source. And that hum... that hum that he'd stopped hearing altogether on the TARDIS suddenly became so apparant in this unusual setting. It was almost as though... it had been made just for them. Did someone know they were coming? Or was there some psychic element at work?

"Is this some sort of..." the Doctor turned to see the golem had disappeared. "...joke?" he finished uncertainly.

"I don't know," she said, biting her lower lip. "I-I can't tell." Her gaze moved over to one side of the room. One bed. "How often do you sleep, again?" She knew the answer, really, but still. Why would they give them only one?

"Well, this is just not normal," he decideded, leaning against the door frame as he surveyed the room. "I mean, even by our standards, this seems a bit unlikely!" he went on, straightening up again and starting to investigate, opening a few drawers and such. "Eh, about once a week I guess, I don't exactly have a routine. Why?" he asked, apparently oblivious to what Rose was seeing.

"Um." Rose turned back to him, watching him look through the dresser. "There's two of us. And only one bed." She ambled over to the closet, pulling the door open. "And it looks like our entire wardrobe's in here. But it can't be ours, can it? Ours is still- this isn't the TARDIS."

The Doctor turned, acknowledging the bed situation with a mild interest before simply stating: "Oh. So there is." Although it didn't show in his expression, the Doctor's mind was already over-analysing the bed. Why did the planet think that was their need or desire? The less time spent dwelling on that the better.

He was glad for the distraction of the wardrobe, but a closer examination made him feel a little queasy. He scrunched up his nose and reached into the pocket of a jacket that was hanging there, the colour draining from his face as he produced a slip of psychic paper. He patted down his own pockets to find that this was indeed the original copy. "Oh, very good David Blaine!" he joked, slipping it into his own pocket, rather disgruntled.

"This is so weird," she said, reaching in and pulling out a jumper. "Hey, it's one of my favorites!" She frowned slightly, tilting her head. "I don't get it. Yeah, okay, maybe it's a psychic thing, but why would it keep us here? I'm guessing we're not the only guests at this place..."

It was a fair question; the Doctor could accept that a mind-reading room was possible, but the question of why was a little more worrying. "I don't know. I wonder if the other guests arrived through choice," he said thoughtfully, moving from the wardrobe to run his hand along the wall, feeling the strange vibrations of the TARDIS. This was too good to be done by one person, or even a group of people. "It's not even like we can technically be called guests. We're... well, we're citizens. We're this planets population..." he explained, realising again how horrific that sounded.

"I wonder how many there are," she said, hanging the jumper back up and shifted some other clothes around, grinning when she found the pink dress she'd worn back in the 1950's. "People, I mean." She released her hold on the dress and stepped back, shutting it again.

"I don't know. I'd guess those stone people are what's left of the original inhabitants. Perhaps they're trying to repopulate in a rather unconventional way... in which case I'd guess there aren't many people here. Well. Yet," he suggested with a little shrug. "Unless it's a new planet.. hmm. I've never heard of it, but maybe the TARDIS knows something. Or maybe the other.. new civilians know more than us!" he said, trying to remain positive about the situation.

"Maybe," she said, quiet as she turned in her spot, looking at the entire room. She sighed softly and made her way back over to the Doctor's side, wrapping her arms around him in a hug. It was another moment before she pulled back. "Should we go check the TARDIS?"

The Doctor accepted her hug gratefully, rubbing her back in a comforting manner. "It'll be all right," he insisted softly. It was strange, but the thought of being trapped was worse than anything they had faced together. It didn't matter how perfect or luxurious it was. As far as the Doctor was concerned, prisons came in many different guises, and not all of them had bars or fences.

"Yeah, come on then. Let's see what the old girl makes of this place," he suggested. Although the Doctor didn't want to leave until they'd solved the mystery, he hoped that the TARDIS would give them quick answers and perhaps a reassurance that they could leave.

"Yeah, it will," she said, taking another look around before she took his hand. "I'd like that. I'd feel better, at least." Hopefully they'd be able to leave. It did look like a nice place, but she didn't want to be stuck here forever!

As usual, he gave her hand a little squeeze of encouragement, smiling over at her as if nothing could possibly go wrong. "Right. We'll do a little scan, look it up on the map, and most importantly check she's still in working order," he nodded. "Come on!" he grinned, giving her hand a little tug so they could head off and check everything out.
